Cynopsis: DIGITAL
3/26/07
Good Morning, it’s Monday, March 26, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
A ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Denny Chin shot down’s Cablevision’s attempt to offer its entire line-up of programming in a network DVR capacity. The system would have allowed digital cable subscribers to record and play back shows stored on remote servers maintained by the MSO instead of on set-top box hard drives in the home, allowing Cablevision to add DVR functionality without providing a separate box. Twentieth Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, NBC Studios, CNN and TBS argued such an approach violates copyright law.
CBS struck a deal to supply Sprint TV with full episodes, live mobicasts and video highlights from several CBS shows. On demand content includes nightly mobicasts of CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, full episodes of Jericho and clips form several popular prime time and late night shows including the three CSIs, Numbers, Survivor and Late Night with David Letterman. The content will be ad supported with short video pre-rolls.
The reviews are coming in for the Apple TV device, most quite positive. As one might expect, the user interface, design, ease-of-use and picture quality are widely praised. But a streaming video device it is not. Apple TV is designed to transfer movies, photos, TV shows, video clips and music from a Mac or PC to a large-screen set in the living room, over a standard wired or wireless network. That means anything you have bought on iTunes and downloaded to your hard drive is playable. What it doesn’t do is connect directly to the internet to enable direct purchases from the iTunes store, like the Xbox 360 does with its Marketplace. Nor will it play any video that is not MPEG-4 encoded, meaning formats such as AVI, WMV and DivX are not supported. Finally, the 40 GB hard drive only includes 33 GB of usable space.
MSNBC.com launched a new multimedia application that combines the fluidity of video on television with the multimedia capabilities of the internet. In The Fight For Iraq: A Regional Powerplay, a video cutout of NBC Middle East Correspondent Richard Engel can be seen discussing the ramifications of the ongoing conflict between Shiite and Sunni Muslims in the region. He stands in front of a map that changes colors and is interspersed with photos and text-based extra information. Check it out at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17722026
Full episodes of October Road and Dancing of the Stars were added to the ABC.com broadband player, made available the day after they premier on air. ABC will also add the entire first season of Day Break to the site this month, including previously unaired episodes.
Video streaming of TBS‘s My Boys on TBS.com’s Laugh Lab achieved 2.7 million streams since the series launched online in December. The show helped boost total views on the broadband player by 562 percent that month over the previous month with a per-week average of 680,000 views. All thirteen episodes of the comedy were made available, the first high profile Turner original to be streamed in its entirely online.
World Championship Sports Network and www.ESPN360.com will provide exclusive live online video coverage of the 12th FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. The biennial event features 2,000 competitors from 175 nations, competing in swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo. Live coverage and on-demand highlights begin March 25 on ESPN.com.
Microsoft is temporarily barring new users from downloading video from Soapbox, MSN’s answer to YouTube. The company said it was working to create better protection against pirated video uploads, and that existing subscribers could still sign in to use the service. The decision was made immediately following MSN’s decision to join in the new NewsCorp./NBU online video joint venture with AOL and Yahoo. The beta version of Soapbox launched in mid-February.
The FCC agreed to study how internet service providers manage high-speed traffic and to consider adopting regulations to insure all web traffic is treated equally. The “net neutrality” issue has been a contentious one, with content providers such as Google and Yahoo! supporting neutrality regulations and network service providers such as cable and telco companies favoring a non-regulated internet that would allow them to charge heavier users more. The commission also wants to insure data coming from and going to lower-tiered subscribers receives the same priority within networks.
Verizon’s FiOS TV passed an additional 129,000 households in 12 Southern California cites including Santa Monica, Huntington Beach and Long Beach. This brings Verizon’s total footprint in SoCal to 350,000 homes passed, projected to be 500,000 by the end of the year. California changed its video franchising law earlier this month to allow a state-wide franchise to be applied for, which Verizon quickly took advantage of. Time Warner Cable in Los Angeles has had its share of problems integrating Comcast and Adelphia subscribers into its network. The company was sued by a group of newly-transferred customers last November because of internet, TV and email service interruptions.
The arrival of Apple TV is what triggered Starz suit against Disney, according to Starz Entertainment CEO Bob Clausen, who was quoted in a report on Multichannel News.com. The suit claims Disney’s agreement to sell titles on Apple’s iTunes and Wal-Mart.com violates its exclusive online rights. Apple TV is expected to accelerate sales of full-length movies on iTunes, as consumers have been less likely to sit in front of a computer or an iPod for a full two hours. Disney has said it expects to reap $50 million during the first year of its iTunes partnership.
AT&T debuted AT&T U-verse OnTheGo, a new service offered in conjunction with MobiTV allowing U-verse customers to view live channels on their broadband-connected PC. OnTheGo subscribers can view nearly 30 channels on their computers, including Discovery Channel, The Weather Channel and MSNBC. The service costs an extra $10 per month.
Advocacy group MoveOn.org and partner Brave New Films are suing Viacom, according to Variety, alleging the company unlawfully demanded the removal of a Colbert Report parody from YouTube. The video, entitled “Stop the Falsiness,” was taken down last week due to a request from Viacom but was soon put back up by the afternoon. Parodies typically fall under the Fifth Amendment and are protected against copyright infringement claims.
Microsoft is combining its web search and online advertising divisions after cutting revenue expectations for both. The announcement comes just weeks after Windows Live VP Blake Irving and head of Windows Live Search Christopher Payne announced they would leave the company. Kevin Johnson, President of the platforms and services division, will oversee the newly consolidated division. Microsoft also named Satya Nadella as Corporate Vice President of the new group.
ABC told media buyers it is considering inserting commercials directly into its online programming. For instance, commercials would pop out of televisions, cell phones and print ads appearing within episodes of shows such as Ugly Betty and According to Jim, then expand to run in full-screen mode.
Group members of MTV Network’s new spiketv.com/iFilm alliance will report to Erik Flannigan, Senior Vice President, Digital Media, MTVN Entertainment Group. Former President and CEO of iFilm Blair Harrison will relinquish his responsibilities and is currently in conversations to determine what his next role in the company will be.
Wira Soedarmono was named VP of Technology for non-traditional media and marketing company Channel M. Wira will be bases in Los Angeles and report to David Teichner, CEO of Channel M.
Www.uvntv.com is a community video site that combines user-generated video with social networking and multimedia functionality. Video playlists appear at the top of each personal profile, which feature customizable slide shows, screen wipes and other visual goodies. Users can send text messages or utilize a video chat function as they watch television clips or play games. The site has a little bit of everything, and its community seems to skew toward actors, models and industry types.
