Cynopsis: Kids!

03/24/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, March 24, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Brian d’Arcy James has been cast as Shrek, in Broadway’s Shrek the Musical, based on DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek movies, which in turn is based on William Steig’s book Shrek.  Directed by Jason Moore, best known for his director of Avenue Q, Shrek the Musical features music by Jeanine Tesori and book by David Lindsay-Abaire.  Also joining the cast of the show are Chester Gregory II, he’ll play Donkey, and John Tartaglia as Pinocchio.  The cast also includes the previously announced Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad and Kecia Lewis-Evans as the Dragon.  Shrek the Musical opens December 14, 2008.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Indie producer Cartoon One is set to launch the third season of School For Vampires, a co-production with Hahn Film Germany, at MIPTV next month.  With the new season of School For Vampires, there are a total of 78×13 episodes available.  Koch Media has picked up the Home Video & DVD rights for Italy, and Warner Records Italy will release the soundtrack from the series.

A revival of Theatreworks/USA‘s family-targeted musical, Junie B. Jones, has opened off-Broadway at NYC’s Lucille Lortel Theatre, according to Playbill.com.  Staring Jennifer Cody, the musical is based on Barbara Park’s book series of the same name.  The musical features book and lyrics by Marcy Heisler and music by Zina Goldrich.

Roaring Brook Press completes a deal with author/architect David Macaulay to create the new imprint, David Macaulay Studio, per PublishersWeekly.com.  Slated to bow in 2011, the new imprint will publish new books by Macaulay, who will also be the imprint’s Creative Director.  The first two Macaulay book titles are Home Sweet Home, focusing on the Earth, and a not-yet-titled book focused on American History.  If you have never picked up one of Macaulay’s books you are missing out.  Houghton Mifflin will publish his newest book, The Way We Work, this fall 2008.

DHX Media Ltd.’s Vancouver-based Studio B Productions Inc. inked a multi-year international TV music royalty agreement with Canadian indie music publisher ole.  ole will both monitor and collect TV music publishing and audio-visual re-transmission royalties in more than 100 territories for the production company’s current and future productions.  They include George of the Jungle, Ricky Sprocket – Showbiz Boy, Being Ian; The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers! And others. The 20-year old Studio B will launch two new series this year, including Kit vs. Kat with YTV and Jetix Europe and Martha Speaks with WGBH Boston.

Screen Actors Guild Foundation and Idearc Media Corp., the home of www.Superpages.com , unveil a fourth season of Storyline Online videos featuring a new lineup of celebrities.  The new season, made possible by a grant from Idearc Media Corp., stars the CCH Pounder, Caitlyn Wachs, Pamela Reed and Robert Guillaume.  They join a line-up of numbers celebrities reading kid’s books on the website, which currently reports receiving 1+ million views each month by educators, parents and kids.  In addition to the actual stories, the site offers supplemental curriculum developed by early literacy experts.

MARKETING /LICENSING

World Wrestling Entertainment kicks off its The Road to WrestleMania XXIV campaign today, which includes a partnership with Habbo, the youth-targeted online virtual community.  The campaign challenges Habbo users to get their personal avatars to compete against each other based on the themes of five anticipated WrestleMania matches.  A WWE annual event, WrestleMania XXIV, takes place March 30, 2008.  The Road to WrestleMania XXIV promotion features seven themed rooms on Habbo.  The campaign will be promoted via a variety of Group Pages created within Habbo featuring alerts about daily race start times and locations, exclusive WWE videos, and free virtual swag, including WWE-branded badges and wallpapers.

Scott Ian, co-founder and rhythm guitarist of the heavy metal band Anthrax, has inked a licensing deal with Bif Bang Pow! to produce action figures and bobble heads based on his likeness.  Bif Bang Pow! has produced collectibles based on a range of films (e.g. The Big Lebowski, Flash Gordon: The Movie) and TV shows (e.g. Showtime’s Dexter), but this is its first step into the world of rock and roll.  The Scott Ian Bobble Head, the first product under the deal, can be pre-ordered now and will be available this summer 2008.

The Walt Disney Company and The Children’s Place Retail Stores, Inc., are deep into discussions that could see Disney taking back ownership of a portion of the Disney Store chain in North America.  In fall 2004 Disney inked a long-term deal giving The Children’s Place ownership of its Disney Store chain.  Disney now believes that the stores, “can be an important extension,” of its brand.
