Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, March 21, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Jim Henson Company and Spirit Music Group, an independent music publishing company, enter into a global, multi-year joint venture under which the companies will co-own and co-publish songs, scores and soundtracks from Henson’s future output of new film, TV and web-based programming.  Additionally, Henson and Spirit have inked a worldwide administration deal that will see Spirit administer and promote Henson’s extensive back catalog, which features Henson’s media library including the movies Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal, TV series Fraggle Rock, Farscape, The Hoobs, Mopatop’s Shop, Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas, Mother Goose Stories, and The Wubbulous World Of Dr. Seuss, as well as Sid the Science Kid and Dinosaur Train, the latter two both air on PBS Kids.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney Channel acquires rights to Ditz, a new and as yet unpublished comic book character created by noted veteran artist Neal Adams, for development as a live-action series, per Heat Vision.  Currently in development, creator/writer Steve Marmel (Sonny With a Chance) will serve as showrunner on the new Ditz series, he is also writing.  Ditz revolves around a teen and her first time guardian angel, who set out to help those in trouble by possessing their bodies.  This has its various issues, including leaving the teen’s body without its own self, making her a ditz and causing all sorts of problems until she can make her way back to her own body.  Adams helms Continuity Studios with his producer/wife Marilyn.  Adams is noted for his work on the 1960s and 70s comic books including X-Men, Green Lantern and Batman.  He is also at work on an X-Men mini series and his own comic book series, titled Blood, for Dark Horse Presents.

MORE KIDS STUFF

9 Story Entertainment completes new broadcast deals for its kid-targeted factual series, Making Stuff (52×5).  Produced by Loten Media, the short-form series has been acquired by SIC (Portugal), Noga (Israel), Al Jazeera (Middle East), and Bonambridge Media (Malaysia and Brunei).  Making Stuff premiered in Canada in fall 2010 on TVO, and on TFO (in French) and Knowledge Network.

Behr Entertainment adds the kid-targeted animated/live-action series Ribert & Robert’s Wonderworld (78×30), which it will showcase at MIP TV next month in Cannes.  Built around kindergarten curriculum themes, the series features the energetic toad Ribert and his best pal Robert as they travel, meet performers, take part in quizzes and science experiments, and deal with daily age-appropriate issues.

BBC Worldwide release two new preschool and parent-targeted apps, In the Night Garden and Teletubbies: My First App!, at the App Store in the UK.  The In the Night Garden app lets preschoolers meet, dance and play games with characters from the series and explore many of the locations featured in the show.  Teletubbies: My First App! is an interactive app that features all the original series characters, and original music and voices.  The app includes a range of games and a dedicated Parent’s Zone, which allows parents to customize the app for their kid(s), including how long they can play and access to other content.

Night & Day Studios, a developer and producer of apps, will release as series of Freaky Flipsters apps this fall 2011, based on the characters created by author/illustrator David Quentin Sheldon.  SupperTime Entertainment, a rights management/creative services company, will be responsible for growing K6-12 targeted Freaky Flipsters into other platforms including TV, books, and merchandise licensing.  Night & Day is also set to release licensed games for Richard Scarry’s Busytown, Yo Gabba Gabba, and The World of Eric Carle.  The company is known for its educational Peekaboo Barn apps and its My Very First App.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Lisle International names K.E. Mathiasen (KEM), part of the Top Toy Group, to produce ZhuZhu Pets licensed apparel and home textiles for the Nordic regions.  The two-year deal with KEM was organized in conjunction with Kidz Entertainment/EEMC, Lisle’s sub-licensing agent for the ZhuZhu Pets in the Nordic regions and Central Eastern Europe, and will feature a range of t-shirts and bedding featuring ZhuZhu Pets characters rollout throughout Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland.  Created by Cepia, ZhuZhu Pets debuted in 2009.

Scholastic Media will get its 20th anniversary celebration for its I Spy franchise underway next month simultaneous to the publication of I Spy Spectacular: A Book of Picture Riddles, featuring riddles by Jan Marzollo and photos by Walter Wick.  The year-long celebration will feature a range of new I Spy releases across multiple categories and platforms, including a new My I Spy online game, a live-promotional event and coordinated brand promotion across Scholastic Inc.’s divisions.  The anniversary year will also be supported with a national ad campaign as well as various events.  Additional new releases for 2011 include: New interactive titles include I Spy Super Challenger for Leapster Explorer (summer 2011) and I Spy Castle for Nintendo DS (fall 2011); Briarpatch, Scholastic’s exclusive board game, puzzles and card game licensee, will release five new I Spy titles this year, including the anniversary game I Spy Spectacular (spring 2011), which coincides with the book of the same name.  There are 42 million I Spy books in print.  The I Spy TV series continues to air in the US on HBO Family and has been acquired in 20 countries (12 languages) around the world.

Atlantyca Entertainment is releasing 15 Geronimo Stilton book titles in Argentina through a special promotion in Ediciones Destino La Nacion, one of Argentina’s daily newspapers.  Under the deal, which was put together by Grupo Editorial Planeta, the newspaper will offer 15 Geronimo Stilton stories in a 15-week promotion that is currently under way.  Ediciones Destino will offer 362,000 copies of the 15 Geronimo Stilton titles for the promotion and has budgeted US$125,000 for marketing and advertising for the promotion.  Prior to this the newspaper has offered affordable popular kid-targeted titles to its readers in Argentina, such as Barbie Princes, Ben 10, as well as books by noted Argentinan author Maria Elena Wals.

Better Homes and Gardens teams with Share Our Strength, an organization that aims to end childhood hunger in the US, to launch Clean Out for Kids ( www.bhg.com/cleanoutforkids), an initiative to raise awareness and money to help their joint mission by hosting yard sales, and donating the proceeds.  Kicking off this month and running through the end of the year, proceeds from Clean Out for Kids yard sales will benefit Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign.  In addition to local efforts, folks can also participate online by selling items via eBay ( www.ebay.com/cleanoutforkids ).
