Good morning, it’s Monday, June 4, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
More executive staffing revelations at NBC: Katherine Pope has been named President/NBC Universal TV Studio. The news of her advancement comes after rumors that Katherine’s position within the company was unstable after the departure last week of her boss Kevin Reilly, former President/NBC Entertainment. During that same Memorial Day Weekend shuffle, the company named Ben Silverman and Marc Graboff as Co-Chairmen of NBC Entertainment and NBC Universal TV Studio. Katherine, who for the last 18 months has been EVP/NBC Entertainment, will replace Angela Bromstad as head of the studio. Angela will likely be retained at NBCU, possibly with a position based in London. Additionally, Shelley McCrory, SVP/Comedy at NBCU TV Studio will leave the company at the end of this month, the same time her contract expires. She reportedly informed upper management back in February that she wished to depart at the end of her current contract. It is expected that Teri Weinberg, Silverman’s head of scripted programming at Reveille is up for the same position at NBC, possibly as EVP at the network.
Tonight’s Premieres:
CBS: Creature Comforts at 8p
FOX: Hell’s Kitchen at 9p
BBC America: Hollyoaks at 1030p
Tonight’s Finales:

The History Channel debuted its new series The Universe on May 29, and marking the network’s best series premiere ever. The Universe drew in 796,000 impressions among A25-54, 777,000 impressions among A18-49 and 1.6 million impressions with total viewers. TV Land has picked up the cable off-net rights to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, adding it to the schedule as of August 7th, reports TV Week. Distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television, the show is arguably neither a TV-centric series nor a “classic” by most standards, but EM: Home Edition hits what the network calls its “sweet spot” – that is the audience that falls within the Adults 40-54 range.
Fox‘s reality series On the Lot from Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett has been edited down to just one episode each week, combining both the competition and the result shows, and airing on Tuesdays at 8p. It’s finale episode – a 2-parter – is still scheduled for August 13 and 14, at 8p. Fox will air repeats on Mondays at 8p, beginning tonight with a repeat of the season finale of House.
Ovation TV is gearing up for its network re-launch in conjunction with its debut on DIRECTV starting June 20. Under the mission umbrella “Make Life Creative,” Ovation TV will institute a number of multi-platform strategies across the linear channel, broadband and VOD, including local content. Additionally, Ovation will partner with educational organizations and cultural institutions nationwide to increase local involvement and programming content. The network’s web site at www.ovationtv.com will be a creative hub for these cultural institutions providing discussion forums and ways viewers can share their creative passions.
Discovery Health will take its daytime series about high fashion models that happen to be pregnant, to primetime as the Runway Moms special airs June 5 at 8p. The network will also air a week’s worth of baby shows during Baby Week from June 10-15.
USA Network’s premiere of its miniseries Starter Wife last Thursday (9-11p) based on National Live+Same rounded actuals, delivered 2.9 million A18-49 viewers, 2.8 million A25-54 viewers and 5.4 million total viewers.
The Ski Channel has entered into a partnership with Olympic gold medal skier Jonny Moseley. Under the pact Moseley will serve as a spokesperson, on-air talent, analyst, instructor, advisor and he will also make an investment in the Ski Channel. Among the immediate plans, Moseley will host a show tentatively titled Air It Out with Jonny Moseley, where he will interview athletes, experts and others. He will also be featured in an instructional series that will air on the channel and be available on DVD. Slated to launch in 1Q 2008, The Ski Channel has a long-term deal in place with Time Warner Cable.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
ABC has greenlit the new variety-game show Wanna Bet from producers Phil Gurin and Marc Jansen. The network has ordered six episodes which will debut sometime next season. The series, originally based on a German production called Wetten dass …?, will be hosted by the British comedy team of Ant & Dec. The show will feature celebrities who will bet whether or not average people can perform amazing stunts.
As part of its two year first-look agreement with NBC last year, Second City TV will work with the network on a U.S. adaptation of the BBC’s Spoons. The sketch comedy series, from director and writer Phil Traill, will be about 20-30+ year olds and relationships and s#x. The U.K. version of the show from Channel 4 aired on BBC America earlier this year.
Casting Call: The producers of The Apprentice, Nanny 911 and Wife Swap are casting for a new network reality competition series and looking for younger women who are 18-30, love to party and full of attitude. The premise of the show is to take these rude and crude party girls, who don’t care what others think about them, and with proper etiquette training turn them into modern-day princesses. If this describes you or someone you know, send an email with name, age, contact numbers, a detailed description of yourself or the person you are nominating and why they would be great for the show and a photo to Brenda Della Casa at [email protected].
