Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06/02/08
Good morning, it’s Monday, June 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
An interesting battle of the bands is brewing over online copyright protection, outlining two very different stances artists are taking regarding the digital proliferation of their music online. On one end of the spectrum is the artist once again known as Prince. The Minnesota rocker – who is among the most aggressive in defending his licenses (suing web ventures and fans alike for unauthorized usage) – has ordered clips of his screeching rendition of Radiohead’s Creep from this year’s Coachella Music fest to be taken down from YouTube. On the other end is Radiohead. The band, which released its latest album In Rainbows online with optional pricing, would like to see the clips re-posted. (Apparently Radiohead owns the publishing rights while Prince owns live performance rights.) Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke to Prince, as quoted by the AP: “Tell him to unblock it. It’s our … song.”
At least CBS seems to get the whole sharing thing. Yes, CBS will be the next network to enable embedding of clips of its shows like CSI, Star Trek and CBS Evening News with Katie Couric on third party sites and services, according to Silicon Alley Insider.
TBS premiers a sassy new web series today called Commuter Confidential sponsored by Match.com and Revlon, consisting of candid conversations with 4 different women about life, love, food, etc. A total of 20 episodes will premiere online and on air with a branded commercial pod during the 11 pm slot on TBS from June 2-27.
Call for Votes: As Discovery’s Planet Green network prepares to launch June 4, submissions are in for Sundance Channel’s What’s The Big Idea? contest, and the network is asking users to help narrow the field. A panel of environmental experts will pick the $10,000 prize winner from among the top five vote-getters. Voting ends June 24 and the winner will be announced on July 7.
Popular entertainment site Revision3 was the victim of a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack by San Francisco-based web video company MediaDefender over the Memorial Day weekend that brought the site’s operations to a standstill, according to a detailed blog posting by Revision3 CEO Jim Louderback. MediaDefender, which is paid by entertainment companies to seed fake files to illicit torrent tracking services, defended its actions to Wired’s Threat Level blog claiming it had no idea it was attacking a legitimate company’s servers. Let’s hope they lay off when Digg founders Jay Adelson and Kevin Rose broadcast Diggnation this week from New York’s Internet Week event. (Sidebar from the editor: We could not provide you with a live link to MediaDefender as it trips our spam filters here at Cynopsis, and would likely some of your’s as well.)
Call for Content: A star-studded panel of judges including Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Tina Fey and Doug Liman are pitching in on a new viral video contest from Empire State Development. Submit a video under 60 seconds in length illustrating Why You Love New York for a chance to have it appear during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast. Additional prizes include HD video equipment, scholarships to film workshops and mentorship with Liman himself. Check out the cheesy trailer for the contest, sourcing colorized footage from the original King Kong.
Google revealed some of the applications its Android mobile phone software will feature. One could be immensely useful for folks who get lost a lot; it’s a Google Maps app with a built-in compass. It utilizes the Street View Feature to help users orient themselves with a stereoscopic street view. No clear date yet on when we can expect the first “Gphones,” but late summer/early fall is the bet guesstimate.
On that note check this little doohickey out: the Trackstick from a company called Telespial Systems is a personal GPS tracking device about the size of a jump drive that stores precisely geomapped data revealing present and past locations, what time you were there and how fast you are moving. It integrates with a variety of online apps, including Google Earth, Google Maps and Microsoft Live. Take it on vacation to help remember all the sites you visited. Use it for your next Geotagging adventure. Throw it in your teenager’s backpack to help keep tabs on his or her whereabouts. The possibilities are endless. The company is even soliciting ideas for new applications on YouTube.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Time Warner Cable CEO Glen Britt, who went on record during the Cable Show complaining about networks offering their shows online for free, discussed plans to release a wireless broadband-connected DVR, according to Reuters, allowing users to view internet video on their home sets. There are plenty of devices that do this already (such as the series 3 Tivo or the Apple TV,) but they tend to require some technical ability to hook up. Having a cable installer come set up video-enabled home networks should lower the barrier to entry significantly.
Onstream Media Corp. signed a merger agreement to acquire IPTV platform Narrowstep in a stock deal expected to close in 90-120 days. Narrowstep provides content companies with a full suite of video services including content management, monetization tools, DRM abilities and distribution services.
After reports circulated of its planned demise, Carat’s digital marketing forum, the Carat Exchange, is actually relaunching. Following along with the new trend of combining digital media with traditional media operations, Carat will expand the topics it covers to include all areas of media and marketing including search marketing, digital TV, mobile, social networking, print, television, radio, branded entertainment and multicultural marketing.

One of the best vehicles for discovery on the web is the tumblelog (sometimes abbreviated tlog or tumblog). They are basically simplified, stream of consciousness bursts that focus more on multimedia and links to other sites than long rambling opinion pieces. A site called Tumblr has a lot to do with the tumblelog phenomenon. The site makes it easy to create tumblelogs with a series of one-click aggregation tools allowing users to add text, photos, quotes, links, chat, audio and video embeds. An RSS feed provides users with an easy way to keep up to date with their favorites.
