Cynopsis

06/26/06

Good Morning. It’s Monday, June 26, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Credited as the most prolific producer in the history of television, Aaron Spelling died on Friday at the age of 83.  There are virtually no television watchers who haven’t spent some time in front of an Aaron Spelling show.  His programs set new television benchmarks, creating new genres and some of today’s biggest TV stars.  Among his list of Creator and/or Exec Producer credits are The Mod Squad, Charlie’s Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Dynasty, Family, The Love Boat, Hart to Hart, Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210 and still on the air – 7th Heaven. He started out as a bit actor and can be seen in an episode of I Love Lucy called “Tennessee Bound” in which he played a gas station attendant, as well as several episodes of Dragnet. When that wasn’t working as well as he may have hoped, he found more success in writing – his first writing credit appearing on Jane Wyman Presents Fireside Theatre in 1957.  Then he went on to producing – his first series being Zane Grey’s Theatre in 1956, and later his first widely recognized hit was Burke’s Law in 1963. He is survived by his wife Candy, his daughter Tori and son Randy.

Tonight’s Premiere
ABC Family:  Kyle XY at 8p

The latest upfront tally finds both Fox and The CW have completed their upfront sales.  The CW reportedly will finish up in the $650 million neighborhood, with an average CPM of about 1%.  That puts The CW ahead of the WB’s take last year by $40 million, tho shy of the combined UPN and WB upfront total last year, approx $800 million.  According to reports, The CW sold about 84% of its total inventory in the upfront.  As reported last week, Fox has finished up in the $1.8 billion area, up by approx $200 million from last year, with CPM increases of between two and four percent, thanks in large part to American Idol, House and 24.

Televisa may have lost a couple more of its consortium partners, but still put in its fully-financed bid for Univision at approx $11 billion, pegged at approx $35.75/share, or a little more than Haim Saban-led group of $35.50 per share submitted last week. Televisa’s group suffered a set back last week when it lost three members – Blackstone, KKR and Carlyle, causing the group to miss the initial deadline for bids. And then late last week, Venevision opted out.  After a quick reining in of the remaining partners – Televisa, Bain Capital and Cascade Investments – the capital was raised and the bid placed. The bid placed by Haim Saban’s group was due to expire last Friday, and did when Univision didn’t respond.  Saban’s group is reportedly considering a re-bid. Univision is looking for a bid in the $38/share range.

Program change at NBC – the results show for America’s Got Talent was originally scheduled forThursdays at 830p.  That has been pushed back to Thursdays at 930p, hopefully giving the net’s newest drama series Windfall a little boost at 10p.

The TV Guide Channel will expand its programming to include the game show series Hollywood Showdown. The half-hour pop culture and entertainment contest was acquired by the network and will premiere today at 12p, airing every weekday. The show has previously aired on both GSN and PAX and is hosted by Todd Newton of Whammy! fame.

Playboy Enterprises Inc. has acquired Club Jenna Inc., the multi-media adult entertainment business founded by Jenna Jameson. Playboy will now control the Club Jenna brand and business assets that include a film production division, a library of video content, multiple web sites and a DVD retail distribution arm. Terms of the final deal were not disclosed. Both Jenna and her husband, CJI President Jay Grdina has signed personal service agreements with Playboy as part of the agreement.

CorrectionWarner Bros.‘s Two and A Half Men terms include 1.5m barter national and 5.5 local minutes (11 avails total for the local station), Monday-Friday.  Friday’s edition said 11 minutes – should have read 11 units.
