Good Morning, it’s Monday, June 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

It looks as though MySpace isn’t the only major media site attracting phishers. Malware in the form of Zlob adware has been discovered embedded in YouTube videos. Attackers are using a fake video link to initiate a p#rn adware program that results in the installation of data-stealing code. Zlob Media’s spyware codec was the most prevalent threat to PC users in the month of May, according to Sunbelt Software’s Threat Research Center.
 
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Nintendo is on track to release a Mii social networking channel this fall, featuring contests and other social gatherings around the digital likenesses Wii gamers create of themselves. The round, kokeshi-inspired avatar figures can already be used to interact with other internet-connected Wii owners using the “Mii Parade” feature.  
 
Meanwhile Sony announced that more than 380 games are going to be released for the PlayStation 3 in the next 9 months, including 200 packaged software titles and over 180 online games. Sony has its work cut out trying to make the $599 game system a success. The Wii has been creaming the PS3 in the U.S. marketplace: Retailers sold 338,278 Wiis in the U.S. in May compared to just 81,604 PS3s and 154,932 Xbox 360 units, according to NPD Group.
 
Comedy Central launched Indecision 2008, its own tongue-in-cheek election portal dedicated to “something approximating election news with something approximating honesty.” The site features clips from The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and Lil’ Bush as well as wallpapers and various interactive polls.


~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Will Ferrell and his scene stealing co-star baby Pearl from “The Landlord” are back with “Good Cop, Bad Cop,” premiering tonight at 8 pm ET on comedic video sharing site Funnyordie.com. Ferrell plays a hard boiled criminal who refuses to spill his guts. Pearl is the tough lieutenant who tries to get him to talk. This is Pearl’s swan song performance, according to L.A.-based FunnyorDie.
 
Video sharing site Flixya relaunched with a model that allows users to keep 100% of the revenue generated from content they upload, as calculated via Google’s AdSense. The site combines bookmarking and social networking functions such as personal info, blogs and photos with video sharing features including allowing users to rate videos by most viewed, most highly rated, etc.
 
BigUpsets.com launches today with user generated video contest. Submit highlights of any upset, from a Little League game to a pick up street hockey match, for a chance to win $500 in cash, retail gift cards or a tickets to next year’s Final Four. The site was created to form on online community where fans can gather and share their most memorable sporting experiences.
 
Gossip blog PerezHilton.com shut down last week after complaints about copyrighted photos appearing on the site. Columnist Mario Lavandeira, the real Perez Hilton, is the target of several lawsuits by paparazzi who claim he posts their photos and videos without permission, according to reports.
 


~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Ebay kissed and made up with Google after pulling all its keyword ads from the site. But the auction site will not return the volume of spending to its previous levels, indicating a shift in strategy to other online networks. Ebay also announced it plans to re-enter China this summer in a partnership with China’s Tom Online.
 
Pando Networks announced a new service to enable streaming and download of HD-quality video to mass audiences. Pando’s peer-to-peer platform enables publishers to distribute their own content from their own sites, providing ad insertion, usage tracking and usage reporting tools. Pando’s current customers include Blip.tv, Revver and Next New Networks.
 
The EU is expanding its inquiry into Google‘s data retention and privacy policies to include all search engines. Google offered earlier this month to cut retention time on user search data from 24 months to 18 months to try and appease the body.
 
The Advanced Television Systems Committee has received 10 proposals from technology companies vying to set the standard for a DTV-compatible mobile video format. The ATSC-M/H standard will enable delivery of television content and data to mobile and handheld devices via broadcast DTV signals.
 
Sling Media released a new version of its mobile video software client compatible with Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 operating system used in multimedia smartphones. The plug in will enable SlingPlayer mobile customers watch and control viewing from their home TV’s via a Windows Mobile handheld computer or mobile phone.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

NBC, Universal Studios and Scripps Networks have all increased online ad spending to try to and attract more viewers to their core products. NBC increased interactive spending by 15% this year accounting for as much as 25-35% of its overall promotional budget. NBC’s Heroes microsite accumulated 7 million unique visitors thanks to exposure on social networks, blogs and an online game, helping the show attract a peak on air viewership of 14.3 million last season. HGTV‘s digital spend averages 16% of its total ad budget, up from 11% last year. Universal Studios’ digital spending currently accounts for 7% of its film promo budget, up from 5% last year.
 
The London-based Aegis Group accounts for 28% of the world’s digital media personnel across its six holding companies, according to new analysis by Paris-based billings researcher RECMA. WPP’s GroupM Interaction ranked second in employees with 25%, followed by Publicis Groupe Media (18%), Omnicon Media (12%) and Interpublic (11%). GroupM has the largest presence in the U.S. with 619 digital staffers.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

Social networkers are spending an increasing amount of time sampling other social networking services, according to the “Web 2.0 and the New Net” report from Park Associates. Forty-percent of MySpace users had utilized profiles on other large social networking sites such as Facebook, while 50% of them had tried smaller sites. One in six users actively visit three or more social networking sites.
 
Nielsen and Nielsen/NetRatings officially completed its merger with Nielsen buying the remaining 40% of the internet ratings firm it didn’t already own. NetRatings is now a privately held, wholly owned entity of Nielsen and its subsidiaries.
 


~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
 

Yahoo‘s longtime Chief Sales Officer Wenda Harris Millard is leaving the company to join Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia as President, Media. She will report to Susan Lyne, President and CEO of MSLO. Yahoo named David Karnstedt, currently SVP/Search and Sales, to replace her atop of a newly merged search and display sales team as Head of North American Sales. David will continue to report to Gregory Coleman, EVP/Global Sales.
 
Christy Tanner
was named VP/Marketing and Online Network Development for TV Guide Online. She has been working for the company for a year as Marketing Director, overseeing acquired sites JumptheShark.com, TVShowsonDVD.com, FansofRealityTV.com and TV-Now.com. Gary Kleinman was also promoted to VP/Associate Publisher of TV Guide Magazine.
 
ABC News
informed its employees it will cut 35 jobs worldwide over the next two years in order to refocus resources on digital newsgathering and distribution. Unspecified news operations will be consolidated, and new positions will be added India, Australia, Iran and Brazil.
 
President/GM of Belo Interactive Media Wes Jackson will step down on September 1, 2007 in a desire to relocate closer to his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

The Apple website launched a comprehensive 20-minute tutorial about the iPhone. (It’s a little dry, but very informative.) The device’s user interface is pretty impressive. Everything is accomplished by tapping or dragging your finger over the screen. The Visual Voicemail feature lists the names of everyone who has called so you don’t have to listen to all of your voicemail to find an important message (or delete the one’s that aren’t). Complicated tasks such as setting up a conference become simple using visual cues. The video interface enables widescreen or zoom options toggled by tapping or turning the iPhone sideways. The coolest thing is that the whole thing is re-configurable; each user can decide which applications to feature on the phone.
