Good morning, it’s Monday, June 23, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
While the digital world continues to wait for the Beatles catalog to be made available online, gamers may end up getting first crack at the songs through their Guitar Hero and Rock Band consoles. Representatives are talks with both Activision and MTV Games about licensing Beatles songs for the popular games, reports the Financial Times. Of course Beatles business arm Apple Corps. and master recordings owners EMI would have to give their blessings.
MLB.com continues to set the standard for live online streaming delivering between 1 and 1.5 million games over the internet each day and racking up between 50-60 million unique visitors a month during baseball season, per Variety. More than a third of all MLB tickets sold online, more than any other sport.
ESPN launched its latest online exclusive series giving fans an “all access” look at Kansas State basketball star Michael Beasley, expected to be one of the top 2 picks in the NBA draft on June 26. Ten 3-5 minute webisodes will premiere on ESPN.com and ESPN Mobile TV throughout the summer.
PBS announced it is streaming the entire 11-part Election Day series on the P.O.V. website, beginning at 11:30 pm ET on July 1 – the night it airs on PBS. The series, shot from dawn until the wee hours of Nov. 2, 2004, examines the political process through the eyes of group of citizens who struggle to get their voices heard.
Saffron Digital will power Motorola’s mobile video download store in Europe beginning with hellomoto.co.uk, the first download store for phones in Europe to provide full-length movies. The service was designed for the MOTO Z10 handset and other OMA DRM 2.0 compliant phones.
Political news site The Huffington Post announced plans to launch localized news sites with locally-stationed editorial staff, beginning with a single editor to run a Chicago edition of the site.
New Jersey-based IA Net launched the ad supported Italian American Network featuring a variety of HD-quality original series. Look for English language lifestyle, travel, cooking and sports content, along with Italian “phrase of the day.”
Linden Labs has created a two-week-long Virtual World’s Fair to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of Second Life, kicking off today with a variety of roundtable discussions, parties and exhibits.
John Malone warned content producers not to promise consumers too much on the internet claiming expensive productions (such as NBC’s planned online Olympics coverage) will never have adequate underwriting through advertising to make them viable, according to an interview in the FT.

John Weiser has been re-upped as President of Distribution at Sony Pictures Television, in charge of sales of feature films produced by Sony Pictures, first-run and off-network syndicated programs and library titles to U.S. broadcast networks cable networks and television station groups, pay TV, satellite companies and cable MSOs, including VOD and pay-per-view. He will continue to report to Steve Mosko, President, SPT.
Michael Cohl, the architect of those $100 million+ promotion and distribution deals with Madonna and Jay-Z, is resigning as Chairman of concert promoter Live Nation after a drawn out battle with CEO Michael Rapino.
Weather.com’s Chris Carter is joining Hearst Magazines Digital Media as National Sales Director. Under him Rose Mills is moving up from Director of CosmoGIRL to Midwest Director of the group, and Dave Woodruff is adding the Digital Media sales to his responsibilities in Detroit as Group Advertising Director for Hearst Integrated Media.
Fox has hired online crowdsourcing firm Passenger to build an online community of viewers around Fox shows to help executives make more informed programming and marketing decisions. Passenger will help the network test programming concepts, plot direction, character evolution and marketing schemes by empowering a group of dedicated users to chime in during the development process. Passenger is one of a few cutting edge firms entertainment studios are working with to the help ping the crowd before committing millions of dollars to production and marketing budgets, (a trend I will be exploring in a panel on crowdsourcing at the NATPE LATV Festival next month.) They also recently worked with Damon Lindelof and Carton Cuse, the showrunners of ABC’s Lost, to help determine which episode to submit to Emmy voters this year, (not an easy task for a serialized show.) The first order of business for Fox community members will be to offer feedback on Fox’s fall line up.
