Good morning, it’s Monday, June 22, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
As the new-and-improved Apple 3G S was released to long lines of devoted followers on Friday, news broke that Apple CEO Steve Jobs underwent a successful liver transplant in Tennessee two months ago and is expected to return to limited duties by the end of June. Acting CEO Tim Cook will continue to oversee much of the company and may end up sharing the Apple co-founder’s duties, according to the WSJ. (Guessing Mr. Jobs’ illness has become a something of a parlor game in Silicon Valley after the company announced he would be taking a leave of absence for medical reasons in January.)
Twitter is looking into adding e-commerce elements including links to products and direct purchasing options as a way to monetize the site, per the NYTimes.
Following up on a long-popular online video format, YouTube unveiled a movie trailer site featuring trailers from recent movies, new releases and upcoming features. Many of the trailers are available in HD quality. The site also enhanced its video search functionality adapting Google’s recent Wonder Wheel layout tool for the video portal. Type a general term in YouTube’s search box, click on “Search” and then click on “wonder wheel” to find tangential suggestions.
Break.com launched a new gaming trailer channel of its own that will tease publisher’s latest games with HD quality clips. Electronic Arts has signed on the channel’s flagship sponsor.
Livecasting site Justin.tv introduced a new DVR feature allowing uses to schedule recordings and save them for later viewing.
New FCC chairman nominee Julius Genachowski plans to look into exclusive deals that cell phone manufacturers cut with carriers at the behest of lawmakers such as John Kerry, according to the NYTimes. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller released a statement of support for Genachowski on Thursday, expected to help smooth the path for his confirmation in the coming days.
The Chinese government disabled some of Google‘s search functions on Friday complaining once again that it was being used to link to vulgar material on the web. The China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center requested that Google make immediate changes to prevent its search engine from linking to such material, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
A Minnesota woman lost her appeal after a jury found her guilty of downloading songs illegally on P2P music sharing site Kazaa. Jammie Thomas-Rasset, who has repeatedly refused to settle with the RIAA, was ordered to pay $80,00 for each copyright infringement adding up to $1.92 million in damages.
A majority of consumers in the U.S., France, the UK and Germany said they may be willing to pay for content online even though 90% have never done so, according to a new survey from Futuresource Consulting. About 15% of those surveyed overall and about a quarter of the sample in France admitted to downloading video content illegally.
Social network and blog visits increased 82% year-over-year and the average spent time per person at such sites increased by 67% year-over-year in May 2009, according to Nielsen NetView. While Twitter remains the fastest growing social networking site – increasing from 1.2 million unique visitors in May 2008 to 18.2 million in May 2009, its month-over-month growth has begun to slow, increasing just 7% from April. Month-over-month growth in terms of time spent was actually flat, decreasing one percent from April 2009. Facebook was the No.1 global social networking destination in May 2009 with 144.3 million unique visitors, the 7th month in a row that Facebook has ranked No. 1 globally.
The new iPhone 3G S is winning accolades for its video editing and processing abilities, speedier processor (the “S” stands for speed) and longer battery life – Apple says you can get 30 hours of audio playback 10 hours of video playback in a single charge. The platform should only grow in popularity with developers with the addition of in-application payments, push notification and Bluetooth support. (Bluetooth integration will allow folks with newer cars to connect their iPhone to the car stereo without cumbersome wires.) The phone has also added some cool functionality such as voice commands for most performed tasks, borrowing a feature from popular apps such as Vlingo.
Start-up developer Studio Symposium released a new app combining music with social networking. SongFeed tracks your current playlists then notifies followers on Twitter or Facebook what you’re listening to.
Welsh-born Sony Chairman Howard Stringer had President added to his title as part of a larger management shuffle approved by the Sony board in Tokyo. Other changes include the naming of Masao Morita, son of Sony co-founder Akio Morita, to Chairman of Sony Music Entertainment in Japan. Mr. Stringer replaces Ryoji Chubachi, who stepped down in April.
Discovery Channel named former Nielsen executive Steve McGowan to SVP/Research, effective July 13. Steve will plan and direct all broadcast, digital media, marketing and ancillary research. He will report to President and GM John Ford.
Father and daughter team Charles and Lindsey Rosin go public with Showbizzle.com today, an intimate little site that documents Lindsey’s efforts to break into the entertainment biz. It’s the home for a breezy twentysomething cinema verite web series about Lindsey and her cohorts’ struggles to break into screenwriting, acting and directing. The show (think Swingers with a feminine point-of-view, a larger cast and a lower budget) looks entertaining and should be required viewing for kids thinking of moving out to LA LA land to chase their dreams of stardom as it delves into the frustrations of being on the outside looking in. But the show is meant to be the sugar coating for the site’s more practical features designed to provide resources to struggling amateur actors and filmmakers. For instance Lindsey’s Dad Charles, a veteran writer/producer whose credits include Northern Exposure and Beverly Hills 90210, will tap friends such as TV director David Semel to provide video primers featuring no nonsense advice about how to position the camera, run a set and direct actors. There’s also a requisite social networking component, encouraging users to form a community and share their stories. Too many of the entertainment-themed web series are nothing more than exercises in celebrity navel gazing. Showbizzle is refreshing in its honesty, its wary-but-not-jaded tone and its genuine desire to help others to succeed.
