The FTC is preparing an investigation into allegations that Apple isn’t playing fair managing its new iAd platform, reports Bloomberg. Regulators in the FTC and the U.S. Justice Dept. are concerned that Apple’s business practices will prevent worthy competitors from emerging to compete with iAd, which goes live July 1 and has already sewn up $60 million in commitments from advertisers. The news comes after AdMob founder Omar Hamoul publicly accused Apple of creating “artificial barriers to competition.”
Google is teaming with FIFA.com to offer a range features to help fans track the progress of their favorite World Cup teams:
- A FIFA.com Chrome extension can be personalized by team to alert you to scores has they happen
- Search results around world cup search terms will include live scores, results and match schedules
- A new iGoogle Gadget aggregates World Cup content for iGoogle homepage users
Univision says its free live streaming player on www.UnivisionFutbol.com delivered record traffic over week weekend, as the South Africa vs. Mexico and Uruguay vs. France matches were streamed across 283,000 unique media players.Univision also says its Soccer app climbed to the #2 position among free sports apps in Apple’s App Store.
Thwarting its ability to get a jump start on the upcoming Google TV platform, media center software provider Boxee confirmed that its digital “Boxee Box” set-top box being developed by D-Link would not be ready to be released in the U.S. and Canada until Nov. 2010. (The roll-out was initially planned for Q2.)
Fascinating hillbilly whodunit “Winter’s Bone,” released by Roadside Attractions in the U.S. this weekend, won multiple Golden Needle audience awards at the 2010 Seattle International Film Festival last night, including Best Director (Debra Granik) and Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence). French film “The Hedgehog,” directed by Mona Achache, won for best film while “Ginny Ruffner: A Not So Still Life,” directed by Karen Stanton and “Waste Land,” directed by Lucy Walker, tied for Best Documentary among a strong field. Although it didn’t win any awards, Jens Schanze’s Plug & Pray is worthy of interest to digitally-savvy audiences, serving as a cautionary tale for the quickly-improving world of robotics and Artificial Intelligence. The movie’s voice of reason is provided by the late Joseph Weizenbaum, a former M.I.T. professor who created the famous Eliza speech program then devoted much of his subsequent energy to questioning the emerging field, according to director Schanze.
The Federal Communications Commission said Friday that it would increase scrutiny of online security and privacy issues following two high profile security breaches involving Apple‘s iPad and Google‘s Street View data collection scandal. The FBI has also said it will look into the iPad security breach.
U.S. Reps. Joe Barton, R-Texas, Edward Markey, D-Mass., and Henry A. Waxman, D-Calif., released Google‘s response for more information regarding the “Spy-Fi” collection data incident. The Congressmen described the incident as “deeply troubling,” for a company that bases its business model on collecting user information.

Watercooler has teamed with Fox Soccer Channel to release the Epic Goal social media game on Facebook and Fox’s soccer site. Dimitry Shapiro, former CEO of bankrupt online video portal Veoh, has been named Chief Technology Officer of MySpace Music, the joint venture between the News Corp.-owned social network and the top record labels. He will be responsible for all aspects of technical developments for the MySpace Music platform, reporting directly to Courtney Holt, President of MySpace Music.
With CD and mp3 sales continuing to dwindle to a trickle for most musical artists, emerging digital platforms may be last hope to save the struggling music business. (MySpace Music has not been a smashing success just yet, but the company has brought on former Veoh CEO Dimitry Shapiro as CTO, as noted above, to have a go.) Meanwhile a start-up called Baeblemusic.com (not to be confused with Babelgum) is trying to help bands take control for themselves, launching a new video portal called Baeble TV. The portal delivers concert footage of indie bands like Passion Pit and Rooney in HD quality. Baeble produces the live shows of bands its founders believe in with crisp sound and a minimum of three 3D cameras and tries to monetize it with integrated marketing sales, syndicated licensing and digital music sales. The company hopes to make a splash by producing higher profile events that will serve to market the ancillary services. For instance, the site will program a series of Midnight concerts on MSG this summer, beginning next Friday with Camera Obscura.
