Both AT&T and T-Mobile released statements touting the benefits of their proposed $39 billion merger as the FCC’s deadline for commenting on the deal came and went. Argued benefits include job gains, increased competition and improved network capacity. AT&T said the new capacity would result in faster data speeds, fewer dropped and blocked calls and better services at a lower cost. The companies also claimed “unprecedented support” for the merger, including support from tech giants such as Microsoft and Yahoo along with support from 17 state governors. Opponents of the deal, including consumer groups Media Access Project and Public Knowledge and #3 wireless carrier Sprint Nextel Corp., have filed objections to the deal, claiming it would result in a virtual duopoly that would raise prices, stifle innovation and limit consumer choice. Post merger, AT&T and Verizon would control about 70% of the wireless market in the U.S.

 
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The Shazam for TV app has completed an integration with Oxygen‘s new show The Glee Project, which premiered last night at 9 pm ET. Users are encouraged to activate the app when Shazam prompts appear on air each week to view exclusive content such as footage of the guest celebrity mentors. The Glee Project follows 12 contenders vying for a seven-episode guest role on Fox’s hit series Glee.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Break Media struck a new partnership with Chuck star Zachary Levi and his gadget/lifestyle blog “The Nerd Machine” to produce a series of videos and events for the next Comic-Con, being held in San Diego on July 21-24. Levi will collaborate with unnamed celebrity friends to create original videos to be launched at “Nerd HQ,” a home base at Comic-Con Break will promote for fans and famous faces in nerd culture.
 
Santa Monica-based MovieClips, which publishes licensed movie clips from major studios, has raised an additional $6 million in funding from two undisclosed investors, according to an SEC Filing.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
The FCC released a report pointing out the benefits of behavioral advertising to local media outlets amidst an ongoing debate on how the regulate the nascent market. “Ad targeting, since it commands higher prices, offers one possible way for local content creators to build sustainable business models that can help finance local journalism,” the report says. The FCC identified 3 goals for government policy change, including increasing transparency, making better use of the public’s existing resources and removing obstacles to innovation. The agency also argued for greater openness by government at all levels, suggesting that new platforms be used to release more data and information and establish CSPAN-type outlets in each state.  
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Google has acquired ad optimization start-up Admeld for $400 million, according to a report in TechCrunch, citing multiple sources. The supply-side platform helps publishers such as Fox News, the New York Post and Hearst Television to improve the effectiveness of their display ads and manage lower-priced inventory. Admeld has raised some $30 million in funding to date from investors including the Foundry Group, Spark Capital, Norwest Venture Partners and Time Warner Investments.
 
Spanish National Police claimed they arrested three members of an indie hacker group suspected of targeting the websites of Sony‘s PlayStation Network as well as corporate and government websites around the world. The group, which calls itself “Anonymous in Spain”, is composed of a loosely affiliated group of hackers and activists in multiple countries. It first gained international exposure last Dec. when it targeted a group of companies including Visa and Ebay’s PayPal unit it deemed hostile to WikiLeaks.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Recommendations from personal acquaintances was cited as the most trusted form of advertisement by U.S. Internet consumers (76%), according to a new Nielsen study of ad spend and effectiveness trends. Forty-nine percent said they trusted consumer opinions posted online. Mobile advertising is also quickly becoming an accepted medium, with teenagers being much more receptive than their elders: 58% of teens say they “always” or “sometimes” look at mobile ads. Overall, only 37% of men say they are not at all likely to respond to an ad on a mobile device, compared to 44% of women. Meanwhile, branded entertainment is continuing to climb as a way to rise above the clutter. Across 12 broadcast and major cable networks in primetime, there were 5,381 major product placements in 2010, up 22% since 2006.
 
There was little movement in the search market share figures for May, according to ComScore, with Google retaining a steady 65% of U.S. searches for the month and Yahoo and Microsoft’s Bing search engines also maintaining their shares of 15.9% and 14.1% respectively.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
The extension of Apple‘s AirPlay Mirroring to the Apple TV set-top box – a new feature of iOS5 – will allow users to connect their iPad 2 to the device to finally bring iOS apps to the television, notes Gigaom. Although native apps are still not supported, the feature enables users to display exactly what is on their tablet on any external display using the $39 Digital AV Adapter Apple released for the iPad2 that provides an HDMI connection for video and audio out.
 
HP is throwing its hat in the tablet ring, releasing a pair of models running on the Palm-developed webOS operating system. The devices are called the TouchPad, debuting on July 1 in the U.S. and priced at $500 and $600, depending on storage capacity. The initial versions will connect to the web only through Wi-Fi but an AT&T 3G version is scheduled for release later this summer.


 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Executive Producer Royston Crabaugh, creator of a surprisingly polished new YouTube reality series RapRinseRepeat, attended last week’s PitchCon fest in L.A. hosted by NATPE and ended up walking away with a couple of promising leads from cable networks (including Bravo and TLC,) who may be interested in developing the show as a linear TV series. The show, which features fairly professional looking production designs, set designs, graphics and recaps, revolves around New York stylist Christopher Gamper and the gossip his customers unload on him when he’s doing their hair. “If you don’t have a big agent but have ideas for a show, PitchCon (formerly known as LATV) can help you meet actual decision makers at cable and broadcast networks,” said Royston. The “RapRinseRepeat” executive producer, who has worked as a designer and a producer for NBC News, among others, sparked interest by sharing detailed plans of how to monetize the series. His schemes include offering up the talent to produce branded entertainment demos for Out of Home and How-to video marketplaces and producing on-the-road makeovers to sell into syndication as soft new packages.
