Cynopsis: Kids!
6/11/07
Good morning. It’s Monday, June 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Vooz Co. Ltd., the South Korean company behind the animated series Pucca, is working on Myo & Ga, a new kid-targeted 3D animated adventure/fantasy/comedy series. Told through the point-of-view of a sea turtle named Ga, the series offers an environmental message as Ga and the sea and land animals search for the mythical ball that will cure the sea God of an illness. Vooz introduced Myo & Ga with seven 2.5-minute short-form animated episodes at the recent 2007 MIPTV, where it was well received, and is now further developing the property as a co-production. Vooz said that all the episodes will be published into a comic book series this year and the merchandise licensing slated to launch fall 2007. Myo & Ga looks pretty cool ( http://www.myogaclub.com ), and I am guessing there will be many vinyl figures to collect.
Batman has returned to the city of big shoulders over the weekend as filming on The Dark Knight, Warner Bros.‘ sequel to its Batman Begins (2005) movie, got underway. The Caped Crusader will spend the better part of the next three months shooting in Chicago, which I have to say doesn’t sound like enormous fun for the movie’s star Christian Bale, who will be hanging out much of that time in a rubber suit, black no-less, in the sweltering heat and gazillion % humidity of a Chicago summer. Directed by Chris Nolan, The Dark Knight is slated for release in July 2008. According to Crain’s Chicago Business, the movie production will create thousands of jobs and infuse upwards of $45 million into the city’s economy. Batman Begins shot for several weeks in Chicago.
Shooting also began over the weekend on Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, in Budapest. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, who also penned the script with Mike Mignola, Universal has scheduled the movie for an August 1, 2008 release. Writing about the movie at Deltorofilms.com, the director said that the movie will feature a music score composed by Danny Elfman, and that this sequel will feature 30+ creatures (the first movie had 8).
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nick Jr. welcomes summer with a new episode each of Dora the Explorer, Go Diego, Go!, the Backyardigans and The Wonder Pets!, which will premiere during Nick Jr.’s Beach Party Week. One of the four new episodes will debut each day Monday-Thursday, June 25-28 at 9a, followed with a two-hour marathon featuring all four episodes on Friday, June 29, 9-11a.
Who’s your favorite clown? If it is Bozo, well then you are in luck. Infinity Entertainment, Falcon Picture Group and Larry Harmon Pictures Corp., will release Bozo, The World’s Most Famous Clown: Collection #1 on DVD on June 26. The four-disc collectors set includes 30×30′ episodes of Bozo that have been digitally re-mastered and transferred from the original films. Additionally, each Bozo episodes features a five-minute Bozo cartoon.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Harry Potter fans were busy this weekend checking out the new Death Eater Masks area at the official Order of the Phoenix movie website ( http://www.harrypotterorderofthephoenix.com ). In addition to featuring a gallery of professionally created Death Eater Art (and it is a little, creepy, but appropriately so), visitors can create their own Death Eater masks, which they can then submit to be featured in the gallery. To do this fans will need to download the Death Eater Art Kit. Oh, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix opens July 11, 2007.
Max & Ruby, the stars of Nelvana Enterprises animated preschool TV series of the same name, will appear in an off-Broadway musical beginning this year. Produced by and adapted for the stage by TheatreworksUSA, a non-profit professional theatre for family audiences, Max & Ruby will play at NYC’s Lucille Lortel Theatre from December 12, 2007 to January13, 2008. Two touring companies of the Max & Ruby stage show will make their way across the US making stops 210 cities. Based on the Max and Ruby books by author/illustrator Rosemary Wells, the TV series is produced by Nelvana Studios in association with Silver Lining Productions. In addition, the Penguin Young Readers Group plans to publish three books this fall.
Warner Bros. has launched the official website for its Speed Racer movie at http://speedracerthemovie.warnerbros.com/cmp/main.html . The website includes content from last week’s press conference (a full podcast, video, photos, and a transcript) in Germany, where the movie is being filmed, as well as a synopsis of the movie and bios. Directed by the brothers Wachowski, Speed Racer is scheduled to open May 9, 2008.
Educational Adventures has completed licensing deals in several categories for its Danger Ranger brand including those with: World Trend will produce manual, battery-operated and musical toothbrushes for release in 4Q 2007; The Bean Bag Boys will manufacture themed bean bags to be available at retail in 3Q 2007; and MediBadge will produce Danger Ranger stickers and temporary tattoos for release August 2007.
McDonald’s and Sony Pictures Animation have teamed for a promotion that will offer one of eight different Surf’s Up toys with purchase of a Happy Meal or Mighty Kids Meal, now through July 5, 2007. In addition, consumers are invited to go to happymeal.com to play Surf’s Up online games and offline activities where they can earn points redeemable for digital rewards.

The Children’s Place Retail Stores, Inc., says it has resolved a disagreement with a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company that asserted The Children’s Place, “committed numerous material breaches” of the long-term license deal under which it manages the Disney Store chain in North America. According to the terms of the new agreement, The Children’s Place will remodel 234 existing Disney Stores using a new store prototype, which it is currently developing, by the end of fiscal 2011. Among those stores, two will feature the “Mickey” format and are slated to be finished later this year, as well as opening at least 18 new stores using the new prototype by the end of fiscal 2008. Additionally, The Children’s Place will complete a “maintenance refresh” program in about 165 Disney Stores no later than June 30, 2008.
