Even without the celebrated iPhone, Verizon Wireless outpaced AT&T during Q2, adding 665,000 net customers during the quarter thanks to strong sales of Android-based Droid handsets. Verizon also added 196,000 net FiOS Internet and 174,000 net FiOS TV customers, brining its internet and FTTH TV totals to 3.8 million and 3.2 million, respectively. During an earnings call with analyst, Verizon CFO John Killian was non-committal on whether or not the company would follow its rival and introduce tiered data plan pricing. AT&T added 496k new net contracts, helped by a record 3.2 new iPhone activations. (The iPhone 4 went on sale at the end of the quarter – on June 24.)
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Warner Bros. Television Group (WBTVG) is posting exclusive video reports direct from Comic-Con this year with nearly 50 videos also being shared with distribution partners, including YouTube, TV.com, DCComics.com, CNN’s Showbiz site and Time Warner Cable’s On Demand portal. WBTVG is also showing off how tech savvy it is at the show, enabling attendees who get within 150 feet of its booth the ability to download show content to the their handsets via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. 
 
CBS.com
kicked off a second season of its interactive Around The World for Free web series. Season 2 follows Amazing Race and Big Brother alum Jeff Schroeder as he backpacks around the globe, relying on tips and aid from his online fans. AT&T is sponsoring the show’s 50 episodes, also providing Jeff with a smartphone, a netbook and a connection to AT&T’s 120 country 3G network.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Facebook has signed another 5-year deal with a social game maker RockYou (“Zoo World”) to use the social networking giant’s Facebook Credits system to help monetize its games. The platform is used to allow players to use real money to buy virtual goods with Facebook taking 30% of the revenue. Facebook has signed similar deals with several developers including LOLapps (“Band of Heroes”) and CrowdStar (“Happy Aquarium.”)

Fashion and lifestyle-themed ad network Glam Media has acquired sports ad network Sportenic and its AdPlatform subsidiary. The AdPlatform technology will be utilized in the roll out of a new premium display service dubbed “GlamAdapt for Publishers.” Similar to DoubleClick for Publishers, GlamAdapt offers creative, targeting, network management and measurement services to help improve efficiency and tap into more brand advertising dollars.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Walt Disney Co. is in talks to acquire Playdom (“Sorority Life,” “Mobsters”,) one of the leading developers in the social gaming space for north of $500 million, reports TechCrunch. Disney, which acquired Tapulous earlier in July, is already an investor in Playdom through its Steamboat Ventures fund, participating in its most recent $33-million financing round.
 
Clearleap
is announcing the deployment of its cloud-based TV platform across all Verizon FiOS systems this morning. Verizon will utilize Clearleap’s platform to improve workflow, streamline production of its FiOS 1 service and streamline delivery of content to its FiOS VOD channels.
 
Mobile chipset maker Qualcomm indicated that it is looking for “alternatives” regarding its MediaFLO business (which includes mobile TV division Flo TV) during a conference call with analysts last week. A sale would free up a sizeable amount of wireless spectrum for other projects. FLO-TV subscriptions, now offered directly from Qualcomm via a line of mobile TV devices, have been hampered by a three-year non-refundable commitment requirement introduced by the company last year.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
For those still waiting for the white version of the iPhone 4, it looks as though you’ll have quite a while yet to wait. Apple says the late-July delivery date will be pushed back again, citing “manufacturing challenges.”
 
Disney Interactive Media
launched a new TRON app for the iPhone and iPod Touch with updated versions of classic Tron arcade games and a location-based tracking system for Comic-Con attendees. Disney’s 3D “Tron: Legacy” remake is scheduled to open on Dec. 17 with a full complement of incarnations and integrations, including a videogame, Disney XD animated series and a theme park ride at the Epcot Center.

New York-based LogicLab has hired Craig Gugel as Chief Research Officer. Craig formerly served as SVP/Media Analytics at the Advertising Research Foundation.
                                                                                         
Former Cookie Jar Entertainment executive Gwen Jones McCauley has joined the Skywriter Media and Entertainment Group as VP/Distribution and Acquisitions. She will oversee the company’s distribution division while Paula McLaren is on maternity leave, reporting to Kevin Gillis, President and CEO.

Web-based interactive TV Guide Clicker continues to expand across multiple touch points, introducing a new sharing guide geared toward social networks as well as Clicker mobile apps for Android and iPhone handsets (pending approval). A step beyond merely becoming a “fan” of a show, The Clicker Social interface alloys you to follow others and create sharable playlists of what you’re currently watching on TV, online or at the movies. (When I say currently, I mean in real time.) Browsing for stuff to watch is made easy by intuitive categories of programming (TV, Web Originals, Movies, Music and Live), each with their own genres. A Trends category also tracks what “trending” in the past day, week or month. Find something to watch like South Park’s April skewering of Facebook & Chatroulette and “check in” to let your followers know what you’re watching or to commune with others who have recently watched the episode. The system should help Clicker benefit from grassroots viral marketing, as a number of web producers are adding Clicker check-in buttons to their own services, allowing their users to immediately broadcast their viewing activity to Clicker, Facebook and Twitter. You can find Clicker integrations at PBS, Break Media, IGN, Koldkast TV, My Damn Channel, Next New Networks, PopSugar and Revision3, to name a few locales. There’s even an awards program, with fans earning awards points by interacting with or sharing their viewing activity.
