Good Morning.  It’s Monday, July 23, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

FOX has announced the renewal of these midseason shows:

  • So You Think You Can Dance will waltz into a fourth season in 2008. The two-night four-hour season three finale will air August 15 and 16 at 8p both nights.
  • The culinary boot camp series Hell’s Kitchen featuring Chef Gordon Ramsay will slice into 2008 for a fourth season. This season’s final episode will air August 13 at 9p.
  • And, FOX has added 13 more episodes of its newest game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics! starring Wayne Brady.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

TV One in collaboration with FarCor Studios and Baisden Film Works will have a new primetime talk/variety show featuring author and radio host Michael Baisden. The weekly, one-hour series, Baisden After Dark will start production July 30, with a premiere scheduled for early October. In addition, Morris Day has agreed to be bandleader and sidekick. The show will feature celebrity guests from entertainment, politics, sports and music in a roundtable discussion focused on one topic with input from Michael and the audience. Sprinkled in will be comedy or musical performances and commentary from Michael’s radio partner comedian George Willborn.

The CW has renewed America’s Next Top Model thru the 2009-10 season.  This fall the series debuts on Wednesday, September 19, and will repeats on Sundays at 9p.

NBC has officially rehired The Apprentice for a seventh season. This new season will feature celebrity contestants and the list of who will participate has not been released yet. Instead of getting hired by The Donald for one of his real estate enterprises, the celebrities will raise money for various charities. In addition, Trump’s children, Donald Jr. and Ivanka, will appear in several episodes as boardroom advisers. The series is produced by Mark Burnett Productions along with Trump Productions LLC.

BBC America will present the U.S. premiere of the sci-fi series Torchwood on September 8 at 9p. From Russell T. Davies, writer of the updated Doctor Who series and Queer as Folk, the series centers on a group of investigators who use alien technology to solve crimes.

TBS’ premiere of The Bill Engvall Show July 17 at 9p scored 1.9 million A18-49 viewers, 2.1 million A25-54 viewers and 3.8 million total viewers.

The debut of Lifetime’s two new dramas on July 15, Side Order of Life at 8p and State of Mind at 9p each delivered an average 2.1 HH rating and 2.4 million total viewers and 2.3 million total viewers respectively. The top show of the evening for Lifetime, however, was its other newer drama Army Wives at 10p which averaged a 3.3 HH rating and 3.7 million total viewers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Cherry Jones will portray President Allison Taylor during the seventh season of FOX’s 24. The Tony Award-winning actress has recently been seen in the films Ocean’s Twelve, The Perfect Storm and Cradle Will Rock. 24 will begin again next January, airing on Mondays at 9p.

Esai Morales has been added to the cast of CBS’ Jericho, appearing is six of the seven new episodes ordered for next season. He plays a career military officer who has lost contact with his wife since the attacks in the pilot episode.

Joining the cast of Friday Night Lights on NBC are Daniella Alonso and Glenn Morshower, both in recurring roles.  Alonso plays a nurse who helps with Matt’s grandmother; and Morshower will play Landry’s father and former state champion football player for the local team.

And making the move from a recurring role on Friday Night Lights to NBC‘s new drama series Life will be Brooke Langton.  She plays the lawyer who gets the central character out of jail, a wrongfully accused and imprisoned cop.  Melissa Sagemiller played the role in the pilot.

According to Variety, ABC has given a put pilot commitment to a project based on the non-fiction book Leap! What Will We Do With the Rest of Our Lives?.  The project is from Marta Kauffmann and Goldie Hawn, produced by Warner Bros. Television.   The drama is about how people handle crossroads in their lives.  Hawn will both produce and has committed to  appearing as part of the cast.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

NBC Universal has appointed John Wallace, effective immediately, as President of the NBC Owned-and-Operated Television Stations. John follows Jay Ireland, who was recently made President/CEO, GE Asset Management. Beginning his NBC career 19 years ago as a page, John will provide oversight to the 10 NBC O&Os, reporting to Jeff Zucker, President/CEO, NBC Universal.

TV One has advanced two in its affiliate marketing division: Orlena Blanchard has been promoted to VP/Strategic Marketing to manage the development of the network’s on demand service and VOD efforts, as well as trade marketing programs, marketing initiatives pertaining to digital media distribution deals and national account marketing for Comcast and DirecTV. And, George Lima has been upped to VP/Affiliate Marketing and Local Ad Sales where he will supervise the implementation of all network field marketing programs and local ad sales, as well as national account marketing for many MSOs including Time Warner, Cox, Charter and Cablevision. Both will report to Brad Samuels, EVP/Affiliate Sales and Marketing.

Melissa Bear has taken on the new position of VP/Business and Legal Affairs at TV Land. Melissa will manage contract negotiations for the network’s original programming, acquired programming and other new business efforts. She will also be a member of the management team led by President, Larry W. Jones.

BET has announced several top-level senior management appointments:

  • Scott Mills has been chosen as President/COO for BET Networks. Based in Washington, D.C., he will report directly to Debra Lee, Chairman/CEO and will head the company’s business operations including Advertising Sales, Content Distribution and Marketing, Legal and Business Affairs, Finance, Digital, Research, International and Administration. Most recently, Scott was CFO/President, Digital Media for BET Networks.
  • Michael Pickrum is now CFO and is responsible for overseeing the financial operations and will be involved with overall strategy for the company. He will report to Scott Mills and work out of the Washington, D.C. office.
  • Denmark West has been named President/Digital Media and will head the company’s expansion into the digital realm globally in addition to managing BET.com, BET Mobile, BET on Demand and various download products. He will also report to Scott Mills based in the New York City office.

Turner Network Sales (TNS), the domestic distribution, sales and marketing unit of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., has added Kevin McMahon as Director/Affiliate Ad Sales. In his new role, Kevin will manage a four-member team charged with supporting affiliates. Kevin will also handle National Ad Sales and local promotional extensions. Based in Atlanta, Kevin will report to Kelly Ryan, VP/Affiliate Ad Sales, TNS.

Reginald Williams has been upgraded to SVP/Music Strategy at MTV Networks (MTVN), where he will secure the use of music on MTVN’s worldwide television and digital platforms. He will also advise colleagues and company executives on global music rights matters and will oversee and draft music rights negotiations and agreements. Situated in the company’s New York office, he will report to George Cheeks, EVP/Business Affairs and Co-General Counsel, MTVN. Furthermore, MTVN has promoted Greg Clayman to EVP/Digital Distribution and Business Development to supervise digital business development across the company’s brands. He will work to create new outlets for distribution of digital content and will work out deals with online partners. Greg will also resume management of the MTVN Mobile Media group, and will now work with the company’s international units to seek new partnerships and distribution platforms abroad. Headquartered in New York City, Greg will continue to report to Mika Salmi, President/Global Digital Media, MTVN.

CBS Entertainment has upped Christina Davis and Robert Zotnowski as SVP/Drama Series Development. Both will oversee the network’s drama department, having been involved in several current series such as Criminal Minds, Ghost Whisperer, The Unit, Jericho and Shark. Additionally, CBS Entertainment has hired Yelena Chak as Director/Drama Development, joining from Jerry Bruckheimer Television.

Thursday – A18-49 Analysis:  At the mid-point of July Sweeps, FOX was #1 Thursday night with a 2.9/9 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 8p, CBS snagged the lead with Big Brother at 2.7/9 which was a tenth of a rating point ahead of FOX’s reality game shows Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?/Don’t Forget the Lyrics with an average 2.6/9. FOX took top billing at 9p with So You Think You Can Dance at 3.3/10. CBS bit back during 10p as the Shark repeat won with a 2.1/7.
