Good morning. It’s Monday, July 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

The FCC has fined Tribune Broadcast Holdings’ KRCW-TV Salem, Oregon $15,000 for repeatedly surpassing the legal limits on the advertising to kids.  For similar infractions the FCC has also fined Cox’s KRXI in Reno, Nevada and McGraw-Hill’s KERO in Bakersfield, California for $5,000 and $10,000 respectively, according to TVNewsday.  According to the 1990 version of the kids and advertising rules, no more than 10.5 minutes per hour of commercial content can be aired during kid’s programming on weekends and 12 minutes per hour on weekdays.  The stations all admitted that they had been at fault, claiming human error.

So, what did you do this weekend?  Perhaps you were among the thousands people around the world (kids and adults alike) who sat down to read, altogether now, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, J.K. Rowling’s seventh and final Harry Potter book.  In case you missed it HP7 was released in the US by Scholastic first thing Sunday morning at 12:01a, making publishing history as the fastest selling book with an estimated 8.3 million copies sold in the first 24 hours, and knocking Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (HP6, July 16, 2005), which had held the record with 6.9 million, out of the way.  HP7 had a first of 12 million copies, while HP6 had a first printing of 10.8 million.  The Harry Potter books are published in the US under Scholastic’s Arthur A. Levine imprint.

Elsewhere in record setting Potter news, Borders Group Inc., reports its first day sales of HP7 totaled 1.2 million, setting a record for the bookseller as the biggest one day sales of any book it has ever offered.  Leading up to the release of HP7 Amazon.com reported having 2.2+ million pre-orders, while Barnes & Noble had 1.2 million pre-orders.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

MTV Networks’ Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group will invest $100 million over the next two years into the development, distribution and creation of casual gaming titles, sites and platforms.  Targeted to Kids/Tweens 8-14, there will be virtual world projects, video game titles (console and handheld) and broader integrated advertising opportunities across the demos.  MTV has acquired several gaming properties in recent years including online portal Xfire, GameTrailers.com and Guitar Hero publisher Harmonix. New initiatives include:

  • myNoggin, an educational subscription-based cable gaming service set to launch fall 2007 with Charter, Cox and Insight.  The service is also to be offered online.
  • Nick.com/Nicktropolis Multiplayer Games/Tournaments
  • Nick Gaming Club, a subscription-based gaming service slated to bow in 1Q 2008, which will include multiplayer games, 3D avatars and community features.
  • Ngames.com, a teen girl targeted casual gaming site also set for early 2008, which will be produced by The-N.com and AddictingGames.com
  • AddictingGames and AddictingWorlds will expand to include Massive Multiplayer Online Games with the introduction of AddictingWorlds.
  • Shockwave.com will become a family-centric destination, which will grow to include Nick-at-Nite related content.  The site will also grow its publishing of downloadable games, including Carrie the Caregiver Episode 2: Preschool, which will be available later this year.
  • Neopets will become NeoStudios, focusing on developing new virtual world gaming experiences online.  The first will bow at the end of 2008, followed by a new one every other year.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Pierce Brosnan has joined Hit Entertainment’s preschool series Thomas & Friends as the narrator.  Brosnan will voice all English-language releases for the brand, including three upcoming Thomas & Friends TV series and three DVD specials.  The actor is currently in production on his first Thomas & Friends project, the direct-to-video Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery that is set for a fall 2008 release in the US and UK. Prior to Brosnan the Thomas narrators (US and UK) have included Ringo Starr, Alec Baldwin, Michael Brandon and Michael Angelis.  Thomas & Friends airs in the UK on Nick Jr. and Five and in the US on PBS and PBS Kids Sprout.

In support of the premiere of High School Musical 2 on Disney Channel, Friday, August 17 at 8p, Disney is providing fans a range of digital extras across online, mobile and on-demand platforms:

  • Disney Channel will preview a musical number from the show on Friday, July 27, which can then be found on Disney.com through July 29.
  • The new movie will also be available on VOD via Cablevision iO Digital Cable and Verizon FiOS TV prior to its premier on the Disney Channel. Music video selections will also be viewable at iTunes. 
  • Disney.com is featuring music videos, an audio streaming simulcast with Radio Disney, of the entire HSM2 soundtrack on Disney XD ( http://disney.go.com/dxd/ ).  Additionally, there is also an interactive HSM2 supersite ( http://www.disneychannel.com/highschoolmusical2 ) features exclusive online video content as well as games, cast blogs, photos and a HSM2 Party Planning Kit and so on.
  • On the mobile side, there is a new interactive mobile WAP site that offers fans “insider access” including video, SMS alerts, polls and trivia.  Content varies depending on the mobile carrier and handset capabilities.  Additional content will include games, graphics and ringtone tie ins. Sprint customers will have exclusive access to various short-form video content prior to the debut of the second movie, and Sprint TV users will be able to view HSM1 and 2 in their entirety during August.

The X Games 13 will be held in California this Thursday-Sunday, August 2-5, 2007, with 14-hours televised live across ESPN, ESPN 2 and ABC.  X Games 13 coverage will also be broadcast on ESPN International, EXPN.com, ESPN Classic, ESPN360.com, SportsCentral and ESPN2’s X Center.  For 2007, event competitions will be held at The Home Depot Center and others at Staples Center.  The televised schedule is as follows:
August 2: ESPN (8:30-11p): Skateboard Big Air Final; Moto X Best Trick Final
August 3: ESPN (8:30-11p): BMX Freestyle Big Air Final; Moto X Step Up Final

Nickelodeon new series launches:

  • Nick Cannon’s Star Camp debuted last night.  The show is the network’s first original broadband series is produced by Nick Cannon, Quincy Jones and Quincy Jones III.  The show will premiere new 15-minute segments exclusively on TurboNick each Sunday with the finale airing August 26 at 6p during the network’s TEENick block.
  • iCarly, the network’s new multiplatform series, premieres with back-to-back episodes of the 30-min series, on Saturday, September 8, at 8p.  Hosted by Miranda Cosgrove, iCarly is a scripted series that features kid-created content.  The series will air regularly on Sundays, at 7:30p, as part of the TEENick programming block.
  • The animated preschool series Ni Hao, Kai-lan will launch Monday, October 22 on Nick Jr.  Designed to introduce the Chinese (Mandarin) language and culture to preschoolers, Ni Hao, Kai-lan is told through a five-year old Chinese-American girl named Kai-lan.  Created by Karen Chau and Executive Produced by Mary Harrington, animation production for Ni Hao, Kai-lan is being produced in conjunction with Wang Films and Wang Studio in Greater China.

The BBC has acquired the preschool-targeted multiplatform CGI series Finley The Fire Engine (78×11′) from Entertainment Rights.  The agreement is part of a five year multiplatform deal that will see Finley The Fire Engine broadcast on the CBeebies channel and in the CBeebies zones on BBC Two as well as on the CBeebies website ( www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies ) and on CBeebies digital radio broadcasts.  Produced by RHI and Entertainment Rights, Finley The Fire Engine debuts on CBeebies today.

AtomFilms, a division of MTVN Entertainment Group, and Aardman Animations debuted a new broadband animated Pib and Pog on AtomFilms at http://pibandpog.atomfilms.com and on AtomFilms Channel on Verizon Wireless V Cast.  Additionally, later this month, Pib and Pog will be downloadable on the AtomFilms Channel on xBox Live.  The series is not for younger kids.  Pib and Pog was developed by Aardman in conjunction with AtomFilms Studio and is based on a short film originally created by Aardman and director Peter Peake in the late 1990s.  Peake is director the broadband series.  The first four episodes of the series are currently available.

Turner Broadcasting has picked up the Granada International’s tween aimed live-action series Darcy’s Wildlife (first and second seasons) for air in Latin America.  Turner’s Boomerang Latin America will televise the series across the region on Saturdays at 9:30p.

Bandai Visual USA Inc., has introduced the initial launch of dot-anime ( http://www.dot-anime.us/ ) targeted to anime fans.  The full multimedia content slated to be added this fall.  Dot-anime is the North American version of the like named Japanese website, which offers fans to watch and download anime movies, TV series, songs and information, sweepstakes and promotions.  Additionally, consumers can purchase Bandai and Broccoli anime DVDs and CDs, Broccoli books and manga, apparel and character related products.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Subaru has signed on as the exclusive auto and gold level sponsor of X Games 13, which will be held in California next month.  Other gold level sponsors for X Games 13 include Edge, Amp, New Balance, Schick, Taco Bell and the US Navy.

Cartoon Network Enterprises, the branding and merchandising arm of Cartoon Network, has entered into its first direct-to-retail licensing pact with retailer Steve & Barry’s.  Under the deal, Steve & Barry’s will offer a line of apparel and accessories based on the Adult Swim series Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Space Ghost Coast to Coast.  Products, including men/women/youth t-shirts, are slated to be available for holiday 2007.  The line may expand to include other tops, bottoms, headwear, and outerwear.

Following the federal indictment of the NFL Atlantic Falcons’ quarterback Michael Vick on charges concerning illegal dog fighting, Nike has decided to “suspend the release” of the upcoming Zoom Vick V shoe and related marketing efforts for the shoe that bares his name.  In a statement Nike explained, “…we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent,” but also added that it had not completely severe its relationship with Vick, explaining that the NFL star “should be afforded the same due process as any citizen.”  The Zoom Vick V was to be available in stores this summer.

Crocs, Inc. and Major League Baseball Properties join in a licensing deal for both Crocs footwear and Jibbitz (the little decorative thingies folks put on their Crocs).  The pact gives Crocs the license to the names and logos for all 30 MLB teams and related MLB properties with worldwide distribution rights.  Crocs’ MLB branded footwear will launch in late august.

Sports retailer The Finish Line, Inc., has launched a new brand campaign entitled Be Heard!, in its stores and website and is being supported by TV and digital ads.  The Be Heard effort harkens back to the idea that, like with other apparel items, consumers can express themselves by the shoes they wear.  The ads are running on MTV, MTV2, Adult Swim and online at Yahoo!, Facebook and MTV.com.  The campaign also includes a social website ( http://www.yourvoiceyourchoice.com ) for user generated content, such as photos, music and other ways to show-off their individuality and style.  The campaign was developed by marketing agency Upshot, working in partnership with the Finish Line creative team.  Finish Line has a licensing deal with Versatile Productions, Inc. the rights holder to the Be Heard! trademark.
