Apple‘s answer to the iPhone 4’s antennae problem is to give out free rubber bumpers (say that 5 times fast) to anyone who purchases the phone by Sept. 30, including the 3 million who have already bought one. Customers who have already purchased the $29 case will get their money back. Apple CEO Steve Jobs apologized for the device’s antenna issues on Friday, but also defended its design, claimed other smartphones suffered from similar issues and noted that less than 1% of users have complained about the problem. Meanwhile, reports from Bloomberg and the WSJ surfaced over the weekend, claiming that Jobs knew that the iPhone 4’s externally-mounted antenna could suffer from interference but that he ignored warnings from engineers.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Seeking to take the best from both old and new media, CBS Interactive Music Group and CBS Radio‘s news, talk and sports stations launched a new consumer audio streaming platform at the URL Radio.com. The site, powered with some of CBS acquisition Last.fm‘s core technology, adopts many of the features sported by popular web music services, including the ability to browse, search, discover and build customized playlists. Radio.com’s music player allows you to search stations by call letters, city or genre; buy ringtones from features artists; or listen to songs “you may also like.” (Last.fm’s “Scrobbler Software” tracks what artists and genres listen to most to suggest like and kind material.) CBS also launched a free Radio.com iPad app, offering access to radio stations from CBS Radio, AOL, Yahoo via Wi-Fi or 3G.
 
Microsoft
announced it is cancelling its 1 vs 100 interactive game show on the Xbox LIVE platform after two “successful” seasons. The beta season of the game, which enabled Xbox 360 users to play along with the live hosted, ad supported game show by answering trivia questions, attracted more than 114,000 simultaneous players.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

As music videos become the dominant genre on the platform, YouTube heartthrob Justin Bieber’s Baby ft. Ludacris video officially surpassed Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance as the most-watched YouTube video of all time, approaching 250 million views. That laughing baby is still in the top 10, though.
 
SoHo-based how-to video site Howcast is partnering with New York City-operated NYC Media to provide New Yorkers with a series of “how to recycle” videos offering tips and tricks. The videos will begin to appear in 6 to 8 weeks and may be accessed through a Quick Response code featured on the side of nearly 2,200 New York City Department of Sanitation trucks.

 
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Yahoo! and Gannett struck a local advertising partnership, with all of Gannett’s 81 newspaper sites and 7 of its broadcast sites agreeing to sell Yahoo! advertising inventory as part of Gannett’s local advertising solutions. As part of the agreement, Gannett may also provide select local content for programming across Yahoo! properties in the U.S., including the Yahoo homepage. A phased rollout will begin this quarter and will continue into 2011.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
3D digital stereoscopic projection technology provider RealD completed an IPO on Friday, raising $200 million with share prices rising by close to 30% over the $16 listing price.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
ABC claimed the top-spot again in terms of unique viewers among broadcast TV websites in June (not including the Hulu joint-venture), according to numbers sourced from Nielsen’s VideoCensus. ABC.com attracted 3.4 million uniques last month, a full 1 million viewers more than #2 site CBS. The site for ABC’s new show “The Gates” attracted the biggest audience while reality show “The Bachelorette” claimed the top spot in terms of video views with 14.4 million total streams.

More than a quarter of respondents expressed “strong interest” in a free cloud-based music option on iTunes, and many were willing to pay a subscription fee to access their own music libraries from multiple devices and platforms, according to a new NPD report. Between seven million and eight million iTunes users in the U.S. would have strong interest in one of the paid subscription options, according to the report. These respondents indicated a willingness to pay a minimum monthly fee of $10, either for streaming music or access to their personal music libraries on multiple devices.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Google made a move to improve its algorithm-based search technology by acquiring well-funded start-up Metaweb. (Check out the nifty video on the Metaweb site for run-down of what its does.) The San Francisco-based company is known for products such as Freebase, which creates an open-source graph of people, locations and things. Freebase catalogs TV shows, movies, books, celebrities, companies ­- you name it – for third party sites to access. With this data, Metaweb builds “entities” of information that map out properties that are referred to by multiple names or monikers on the web to provide other sites with a one-stop data cache, whether it be cast info for a movie or Academy Awards the cast members have won. For instance, Freebase’s TV portal accesses public data from sites such as Hulu, Wikipedia and TVB.com to categorize facts and collections. Publications like the Wall Street Journal then tap into Metaweb for “featured collections” of information, while Google relies on the data for its Newstimeline interface, which organizes user search results chronologically. The acquisition will continue to help Google become the go-to place on the web for information, which the company promises will remain “free and open for the world.”
