CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

01/09/06

Good morning.  It’s Monday, January 9, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Google will launch its online Google Video Store, which will have a library of videos available for purchase or rent.  Providing content to Google will be CBS, the NBA, music videos from Sony BMC, and downloadables from independent producers and filmmakers.  CBS will provide current primetime hits such as CSI, NCIS and Survivor, as well as many classics from its extensive library including I Love Lucy, The Twilight Zone, Star Trek and The Brady Bunch – all will be commercial free.  The NBA will provide a full complement of games from the current season as well as games of note from the past.  And if that’s not enough, the downloaded video can be moved to and viewed on that new video iPod you just got as a holiday gift. Google Video Store will be open soon – tho no exact date has been given yet.  Here’s the link so you can keep checking on your own:  http://video.google.com

Elsewhere, Yahoo has announced its newest venture – Yahoo! Go TV, which will after a software download enable the user to link their computers with their television.  The upshot is you can watch stuff on your television that you’ve downloaded into your computer, or anything else you’d do on your computer for that matter. Once the two are linked, you can use your television remote to maneuver.  Yahoo’s plans also include incorporating its music services into the new service, at a later date.  Called Yahoo Go Mobile, it is designed to let users access Yahoo internet content and services via their mobile devices.  Yahoo Go Mobile will launch with AT&T and Cingular Wireless in the US and with Nokia in multiple international markets.

Season Premieres:
NBC:    Emily’s Reasons Why Not at 9p, Jake in Progress at 930p, and The Bachelor: Paris at 10p* MORE GOOD STUFF *Tomorrow night TLC will debut a new series called Beyond the Bull at 9p, a 10-episode series which follows three professional bull riders participating in the 2005 PBR season. Cameras follows these riders as they work to prepare for each tournament, play hard off the bull, manage their careers and professional obligations, and battle their own fears.  Beyond the Bull is produced by Authentic Entertainment for TLC

Sony Pictures Television new syndicated series, The Greg Behrendt Show, has gathered new clearances in their pre-NATPE push.  Along with the 26 Tribune stations, stations picking up the series include WDIV/Detroit, KTVK/Phoenix, WOIO/Cleveland and WYTU/Milwaukee, as well as stations from the Sinclair, Hubbard and WB 100+ Station groups.

The next edition of CBS’ Survivor will launch on February 2.  This one is called Survivor: Panama – Exile Island, and will, naturally, have an all new twist to it.  According to Variety, this time there will be four tribes, not just two, and they will be divvied up by age and sex. After a few weeks, the tribes will merge into just two.  The list of players is expected to be announced today.

The premise is simple – the residents of a small town believe the end of the world is coming, and accordingly live their lives as if every second may be their last, bringing about both good and bad behaviors. The cast includes Sam Murphy, Nora Dunn, Samantha Quan and Rob Boltin, and the show could get to the air by this summer.  THe project is from Three Moons Prods and Touchstone Television.

Everyone knows Dancing with the Stars.  How about Singing with them?  In a new show ordered by Fox from American Idol’s Simon Cowell, Duets pairs professional singers with celebrity wannabe singers, who then perform in front of studio judges and a studio audience, with viewers deciding who stays and who leaves.  Cowell will not be one of the judges, just an exec prod via his SYCO TV.

Elsewhere at Fox, the net has ordered a pilot of a legal drama called Damages from 20th Television. The show focuses on the lives and relationships between a group of attorneys. THe pilot was written by Jonathan Lisco, and he will also exec prod.

The WB‘s new project Aquaman, has cast its superhero:  Will Toale will play the fish out of water hero for executive producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.  Aquaman is produced by Warner Bros. Television

CBS has ordered a pilot of a project called Company Town from Paramount Network Television.  This drama focuses on a small Washington DC neighborhood, populated by government agents.  The script was written by Elwood Reid who will also exec produce along with Larry Sanitsky.

Comedy Central has signed Chris Titus to a deal wherein he will write, exec produce and star in a new project he characterizes as “the Shield with handicapped people”, according to Variety. The project is called Special Unit, and focuses on one hotdog cop (played by Titus) whose antics has landed him in charge of a unit of police men and women, who all have various mental and/or physical challenges, and yet are all quite talented police officers.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *King World Productions, Inc. has named Janet Annino as Executive Producer of the Rachael Ray Show, set to debut this spring. Janet will report to Terry Wood, President, Creative Affairs & Development, King World Productions, Inc. and Paramount Television.

Jeffrey Wolf and Steve Maddox have both been upped to EVP/Syndication Sales for Sony Pictures Television (SPT).  THe announcement came from John Weiser, President/distribution, and both will report to John.  Jeff and Steve will have complete oversight of all domestic syndication sales, library sales and series launches.  All five sales offices will report to them.

Interpublic Media has named Terri M. Santisi as CFO.  Terri will lead all financial operations for Interpublic Media, which oversees Interpublic’s worldwide media operations, including Initiative, MAGNA Global, Universal McCann, and a number of leading specialist media agencies, with capabilities that range from programming and content development to interactive, retail and media barter.

TV Guide magazine announced Peter C. Haeffner has been named Publisher.  The previous Publisher was Scott Crystal who was upped to President/TV Guide Publishing Group in October 2005.  Reporting to Scott, Peter will be charged with overseeing all advertising sales and marketing for the new TV Guide magazine which re-launched on October 17th as a re-designed, full-size, full-color, features-rich publication.

Susan Bender has been appointed to the newly created post of President/Sales for Harmony Gold USA, effective January 23, 2006.  The announcement was made by Frank Agrama, Chairman/CEO, and Colleen Morris, President of Harmony Gold USA, to whom Susan will report. In addition to her sales efforts, she will spearhead the company’s strategic development with the existing sales team, including Melissa Wohl, VP/Sales and Alan Letz, EVP/Business Development.
