Acknowledging the role that social media can play in fomenting revolution, the Egyptian government reached out to several international providers including UK-based Vodafone to shut down all internet connections and cellphone service on Friday to try and end the spread of damaging messages via Twitter, Facebook and BlackBerry. (Deactivating state-owned Telecom Egypt affectively knocked out internet connections for much of the country, as most providers rely on the fixed-line service in some way to carry parts of their service.) However, there already reports of mobile services returning to parts of Cairo. And a group calling itself “We Rebuild”, has turned to organizing 20th century technology including landlines, fax machines and ham radios in order to communicate messages out of the country.
Twentieth Century Fox is attempting to draft off Rovio‘s hit mobile app “Angry Birds” by creating a new version of the game due out in March, co-branded around upcoming comedy-adventure RIO, opening April 15. (Specific platforms were not announced, but leading smartphone and tablet versions can be expected.) The “Angry Birds” app has been downloaded more than 50 million times for iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad, Android, Ovi and Mac/PC.
Professional-themed social network LinkedIn filed a report with the SEC outlining plans for an IPO later this year, per Bloomberg. The site turned a profit for the first time last year after more than tripling its revenue from 2007 to 2009. LinkedIn makes money through advertising and by charging some users for its premium service.
In a further effort to humanize his persona, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made a cameo appearance on SNL on Saturday alongside the man who played him in “The Social Network” – Jesse Eisenberg. “Interesting” was the word he used to describe the Oscar-nominated movie.

Positioning it to compete with Amazon and other rivals, Verizon announced the acquisition of the cloud services provider Terremark for roughly $1.4 billion. The Miami-based Terremark currently operates 13 cloud computing data centers across the U.S., Europe and Latin America.
Google is reaching out to strike a deal with the U.S. Dept. of Justice on it proposed $700 million acquisition of flight data company ITA, reports the WSJ. One proposal is to create a compulsory licensing structure to prevent the company from withholding ITA flight data from competitors.
Vendors shipped a total of 401 million mobile phones worldwide during Q4 2010, a 17.9% increase from the previous year during which phone sales declined by 1.6%, according to IDC. The smartphone market, which is diversifying to include a range of affordable models, is driving the growth and is expected to increase by 43.7% as a category in 2011. Apple, Samsung and ZTE all saw their market share grow considerably. The world’s top mobile vendor remained Nokia, despite its delays in establishing a beachhead in the smartphone market in the U.S.

The iPad seems to have a significant rival in the tablet business. Samsung has already sold two million color-screen Galaxy Tabs during the first three months of its release across Europe (550k units), North America (350k) and Asia (330k). (Apple sold more than 7 million iPads during the period, but still…) The manufacturer expects smartphone sales to double to 60 million units in 2011 and said its Galaxy Tab lineup will be expanded to meet a wider set of user needs.
The NFL is launching two free Super Bowl-themed mobile apps for iOS and Android devices, geared for both users who are making the trek to the game and those who will watch from the couch. A GPS-powered map integrates with Yelp, Urbanspoon and Citysearch to outline local North Texas locales of interest. A cool digital game program, sponsored by Van Heusen and developed with technology provider ScrollMotion and optimized for tablet devices, features interactive video clips of featured Packers and Steelers.
Is blogging (and microblogging) a right or a privilege? (Company employees including the Bengals’ Chad Johnson/Ocho Cinco/PePe, who has been fined several times for Tweeting during games, may have their own ideas on the subject but I was thinking more along the lines of human and political rights.) Twitter co-founder Biz Stone reacted to the Egyptian government’s action on Friday by calling for the restoration of Twitter services as a way to protect users’ rights to speak their mind. “The open exchange of information can have a positive global impact, he wrote in a blog post entitled ‘The Tweets Must Flow.” Twitter has also built an account to aggregate posts and discussions around the topic of preserving freedom of expression.
