Google, which just announced that co-founder Larry Page is going to take over the reigns of the company in an effort to renew its entrepreneurial energies, is getting ready to launch a daily local couponing site to compete directly with the likes of Groupon and Living Social. (Chicago-based Groupon, which turned down a $6 billion buyout offer from Google late last year in favor of issuing an IPO, is expected to double its subscriber base this year from 12 to 25 million email accounts.) The Google Offers prepaid program, currently in the testing phase, will be powered by Google Checkout and rely on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader and Google Buzz to help spread the word about the offers, reports Mashable.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Fresh off the success of “Riese: Kingdom Falling” – which generated 1.2 million streams in two months – Syfy.com announced a new short form online series. The 10-part “The Mercury Men,” scheduled to premiere in early 2011, is inspired by the same Saturday morning adventure serials that spawned “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Star Wars.” The series, set in Pittsburgh in the mid-seventies, focuses on a low-level government worker who must stop an alien plot to unleash their Doomsday Device upon the earth.
 
Sports instructional VOD cable network Sportskool has formed a strategic partnership with online youth sports coaching and instructional company PlaySportsTV to feature its videos on participating MSOs VOD platforms. PlaySports teams with partners such as Sports Illustrated Kids, iHoops and WePlay.com to produce subscription-based coaching and instructional content for parents and coaches nationwide.

Facebook officially announced that it raised an additional $1.5 billion from Goldman Sachs and Digital Sky Technologies in an overseas deal that pegs the company’s value at $50 billion.

Tremor Media, BrightRoll and Break Media ranked as the top video ad networks in Dec., according to ComScore. Each trailed Hulu in terms of video ads served, thanks to an ad frequency rate that quadrupled its latest competitor. Video ads accounted for 16.4% of all videos viewed online in Dec. and 1.6% of all minutes spent viewing video online.

Online stock trading site E*Trade is putting together a fully-integrated digital campaign to go along with yet another new talking baby Super Bowl ad. The campaign, created with its agency Grey New York, includes real-time updates from the Talking Baby on Twitter and Facebook; a redesigned E*Trade BabyMail Big Game Edition featuring customizable talking baby messages viewers can share with friends; and a redesigned YouTube BrandChannel featuring an archive of past commercials and videos.
                                                               

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
As promised, Verizon has filed a lawsuit with the U.S Court of Appeals to take issue with the FCC’s new net neutrality policy. The company argues that the FCC lacks Congressional authority to require broadband networks to refrain from paid prioritization and other practices it sees as necessary steps to efficiently manage its networks.
 
Outgoing Google CEO Eric Schmidt is stepping down with a wad of cash in his hands, disclosing plans to sell 534k of the company’s shares in a regulator filing, currently worth $335 million.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Hulu broke back into ComScore‘s top ten list of online video properties (ranked by total unique viewers) in Dec., trailing Turner Digital slightly with 26.5 million visitors. Google’s YouTube continued to dominate, attracting nearly 3 times the audience of its closest competitors Yahoo and major label music video site Vevo, the latter which climbed to 50 million viewers one year after its launch. A total of 172 million U.S. Internet users watched online video content in December for an average of 14.6 hours per viewer.

announced that the App Store officially surpassed 10 billion downloads. The outlet now features more than 350k iPhone/iPod apps and 60k native iPad apps. A woman from Kent, UK who purchased #10 billion was awarded a $10,000 iTunes gift card from the company.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
You know you’ve created an enduring franchise when you can support an entire website that fans continue to return to for the latest news on upcoming releases and merchandise. George Lucas’ production and special effects company LucasFilm chose its own StarWars.com site to break the news that the legendary series is finally coming out on Blu-ray in Sept. with a comprehensive 9-disc set. (The two trilogies will also be available separately in 3-disc sets.)  Calling it “the most anticipated Blu-ray release ever,” the Twentieth Century Fox-released Complete Saga will sell for $140 but can be had for $90 if you pre-order it and will contain over 30 hours of special features and deleted scenes. This video was also screened at CES to help drum up excitement for a release that could help put Blu-ray players in thousands of additional homes. Blu-ray penetration has struggled to surpass the 20% mark as prices for players have only recently dropped below the $100. But major releases like this one have historically helped push the adoption of new technologies.
