Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 18, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

For kids looking for ways to help in the ongoing Haiti earthquake relief efforts and express themselves about the disaster, Nickelodeon has launched a new website at www.nick.com/helphaiti/ .  The network also plans to air Public Service Announcements (PAS) on Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite encouraging viewers to get involved.  The website features message boards for kid discussions about the aftermath, as well as a list of organizations that kids can encourage their parents to investigate ways to help the people of Haiti.

Other kid/family centric media, entertainment and food companies are participating in earthquake relief by donating money, toys and/or a range of needed supplies including: Build-a-Bear; Disney; Mattel; Microsoft; MTV Networks; Rogers Communications; Time Warner; Toys ‘R’ Us and many many many others.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Happy Feet 2 gets a little happier as the 3D animated sequel to the 2006 Happy Feet adds Matt Damon and Brad Pitt to its voiceover cast, per Movieline.  Set for release on November 28, 2010, the Warner Bros. movie is directed by George Miller, he also directed the first movie, and also stars Robin Williams and Elijah Wood.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Production begins today on the fourth season of Hannah Montana.  As previously reported season four is set to premiere beginning this summer 2010, with the series finale airing in spring 2011 on Disney Channel US and, and then roll out on Disney Channels worldwide.  The season three two-part cliffhanger, entitled Miley Says Goodbye?, will debut on Sunday, March 7 and Sunday, March 14 at 7:30p on Disney Channel.

Chuggington makes its US debut today during Playhouse Disney at 10:30a, on Disney Channel.  Created by London-based Ludorum, the train-centric series will air regularly Tuesdays through Fridays at 10:30a and 7:30a.

Spain-based BKN New Media SL enters into a new distribution deal for the kid-targeted Lua (260×3, 65×3 of which are in production) with Triacom Audiovisiual and Televsio de Catalunya in Spain.  Under the deal BKN New Media will handle global distribution for Lua across all forms, venues and all languages (except TV in Spain).

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Takalani Sesame, the South African version of Sesame Workshop‘s Sesame Street, which airs on South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).  As the producers consider the kid’s landscape and new episodes of the series they will hold a Symposium of Early Childhood Education in Johannesburg on January 19, to discuss policies, practices, health, developmental needs and the media.  The plan is that findings from the symposium, which is funded through a grant from the Open Society Foundation for South Africa, will be reflected in new episodes of the series.  Kwasukasukela produces Takalani Sesame under the creative direction of Sesame Workshop in collaboration with the South African partners.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Toei Animation competes a deal with Japanese designer/manufacturer/retailer Uniqlo to launch a line of T-shirts featuring Toei’s anime series including Dragon Ball, One Piece, Galaxy Express 999, Dr Slump and Saint Seiya.  Designed by Uniqlo, the T-shirt line will be available in France, Russia, the UK, US, Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Korea beginning spring 2010.
