~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS gave a pilot order for an untitled comedy project starring Jim Gaffigan, the former star of Welcome to New York.  Gaffigan will also co-write the comedy with Rescue Me’s Peter Tolan.  Sony Pictures Television and Tolan’s Fedora Entertainment will produce the single-camera semi-autobiographical comedy with Gaffigan as a happily married and harried New York City father of five.  Michael Wimer and Gaffigan’s manager at Brillstein Entertainment Partners, Alex Murray will executive produce.  The project previously landed a put pilot commitment at CBS in September.

An untitled comedy project makes its way to FOX after receiving a pilot order.  From former Saturday Night Life regular Andy Samberg, the pilot is about a diverse group of detectives at a New York precinct.  Dan Goor will be EP along with co-creator/showrunner Mike Schur.  David Miner will also be an EP with Samberg producing.  Universal Television is producing the comedy.

Also from FOX, the network is apparently passing on Greg Berlanti’s pilot Guilty.  The one-hour drama project was first developed for series consideration for the 2012-13 season and also considered as a possible fall 2013 addition.  Cuba Gooding Jr. led the cast which was produced by Warner Bros. Television, Bonanza Productions, Berlanti Productions and Wonderland Sound and Vision.

On its docket, NBC is prepping a new drama from House’s Katie Jacobs.  NBC gave a put pilot order to I Am Victor, based on Jo Nesbo’s upcoming book.  The drama is based around a divorce attorney with a unique view of relationships and is produced by Universal Television and Management 360.  Nesbo will also write the script and Management 360’s Daniel Rappaport and Meghan Lyvers are involved to serve as EPs.

NBC further picked up two comedy projects with the first being Joe, Joe and Jane, the semi-autobiographical relationship comedy from Joe Port (New Girl) and Joe Wiseman.  The half-hour project is about a conflict-avoiding children’s book author caught in an ongoing tug-of-war between two needy, flawed people: his wife and his co-author/best friend.  Port and Wiseman will write and serve as EPs on the project which will be produced at 20th Television.  Previously, NBC gave the project a pilot production commitment and a seven-figure penalty.  NBC also gave a pilot order for About a Boy from Parenthood’s Jason Katims.  The half-hour comedy is based on the novel by Nick Hornby and the 2002 Hugh Grant starring film.  Katims will write and be an EP on the pilot which is produced by Universal Television and True Jack.

CW may do a spinoff series of The Vampire Diaries titled The Originals.  The project would center on the Original family led by Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and will be based on a season four Vampire Diaries episode.  Julie Plec will write the episode and is spearheading the spinoff with Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo as executive producers.  The Vampire Diaries episode is slated to air April 25 and depicts Klaus returning to the French Quarter of New Orleans, a city he helped build centuries ago and where he is reunited with his diabolical former protege Marcel.  Phoebe Tonkin will also star in the episode.

TBS okayed two new unscripted series: Deal With It (wt) from Howie Mandel and Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host (wt) executive produced by Mark Burnett.  Deal With It is a hidden-camera ambush show based on a format created by Keshet Broadcasting and United Studios.  Viewers watch as unsuspecting members of the public are secretly dared to pull a prank on their unwitting companions with no time to prepare.  If they agree to participate, they must obey all instructions given through an earpiece from a secret control room nearby in order to win cash and prizes.  TBS ordered six episodes of Deal With It, produced for the network by Mandel’s Alevy Productions, Roy Bank’s Banca Studio and Keshet Broadcasting in association with Lionsgate Television.  Mandel, Mike Marks and Bank will all serve as EPs.  Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host is a comedic game show where two hosts each present the single contestant with a different answer to the same question.  One host gives the correct answer while the other lies and gives an incorrect answer.  The contestant must then choose the right answer to move on in the game.  TBS ordered 10 episodes of Trust Me, I’m a Game Show Host which is produced by Burnett’s joint venture with Hearst Corporation, One Three Media and London-based Monkey.  Burnett and Monkey’s founders Will MacDonald and David Granger will be EPs.  Both series will premiere in late 2013.

Showtime handed a series commitment to Penny Dreadful, a new show where famous literary characters, such as Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and characters from the novel Dracula become embroiled in Victorian London.  John Logan (Skyfall, Gladiator, Aviator) will write and serve as EP.  Sam Mendes (American Beauty) is also an EP and may direct the first episode.

A remake of the BBC drama Prisoners’ Wives is in development at Lifetime.  The drama will be produced by Endemol Studios and is based on the Tiger Aspect format about four different women, each struggling to cope with a man in her life serving prison time.  Jeremy Gold and Russ Buchholtz will oversee the project.
