Good morning, it’s Monday, January 11, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing from CES in Las Vegas.
 
Witnessing the infectious popularity of the iPhone platform, TV Manufacturers are launching application platforms of their own as a way to add third party content and basic interactivity to broadband-connected sets. (The range of standards will likely slow the development of interesting apps for the TV for years to come, unfortunately.) Samsung, Vizio, Panasonic and Toshiba are just a few of the brands setting up their own solutions for select flat screen televisions, despite the fact that some had already signed integration deals with Yahoo’s Connected TV division, creator of the Yahoo Widgets platform. Meanwhile, digital video company DivX has introduced its own TV app platform, leveraging relationships with content producers such as Break, blip.tv, Revision3 and Rhapsody to offer a plug-and-play solution to CE companies. LG Electronics was named as the first manufacturer to license DivX TV for upcoming Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Yahoo struck a deal with Brightcove to expand its content offerings for the Yahoo Widget platform. Media publishers using Brightcove’s online video platform can now distribute their videos through Yahoo’s Widget Engine.  The Yahoo Widget Development Kit has also finally been fully released to the public, enabling individual developers and larger content providers alike to develop apps for the TV Widget platform. Yahoo has partnerships in place with LG, Sony, Samsung and Vizio, the 4 top U.S. TV brands, to bring TV Widgets to their internet-connected televisions.
 
Both Walt Disney Studios and Sony announced plans to release 3D movies on Blu-ray discs. 3D versions of Disney’s Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland, and Toy Story 3 will be available on a 3D Blu-Ray disc later this year, while Sony’s first 3D Blu-ray title will be Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.
 
Sundance Selects, the group’s new national platform for indie documentaries and world films, announced a collaboration with the not-for-profit Sundance Institute for this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Three films being screened at the festival will simultaneously be available nationwide on-demand through Sundance Selects.
 
InternetSafety.com today announced a major upgrade to its “Safe Eyes” family internet management software, designed to enable parents to filter online TV and movie content based on standard TV and movie ratings. Parents will be able to block kids’ access to explicit music lyrics, deploy filters on major search engines and receive daily or weekly reports on children’s online activities by email. The filtering software can be used on Hulu, iTunes as well as the websites of major networks including ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
HD digital content platform Vudu, which failed to gain much traction as a set-top box-based solution, has completed a range of new integrations to deliver its movies directly to HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players from LG Electronics, Mitsubishi, Samsung Electronics, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba and Vizio. Vudu is also stepping forward as an aggregator of content for the TV app space, launching a new platform to be embedded on HDTVs from Mitsubishi, Sharp, Sanyo and Toshiba.
 
Electus, the production company founded by former head of NBC programming Ben Silverman, has signed a deal with Yahoo‘s media group to produce exclusive premium content for Yahoo and its advertising partners
 
CBS Films has woven a tapestry of short user generated videos to help promote Extraordinary Measures, its first theatrical release starring Harrison Ford. The Inspirational Quilt allows users to upload their own stories for a chance to designate a $10,000 donation to a charity of their choice.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski seemed to indicate that he was willing to relax his stance on net neutrality codification in a public tete-a-tete with CEA President Gary Shapiro on Friday. Clearly trying to alleviate fears on the part of the CE industry of increased regulation, Genachowski suggested that transparency among broadband carriers and technology providers would “reduce the need for the government to get involved.” His remarks came after Shapiro warned in his CES keynote that government could hamper innovation if it takes too hands-on an approach. “When it comes to innovation there’s a lot the government can do, and there’s a lot they should not do,” said Shapiro on Thursday. “The government doesn’t spur innovation or entrepreneurship. The government often gets in the way.”
 
3D technology provider RealD announced licensing agreements with a slew of consumer electronics brands including Sony, JVC, Samsung, Toshiba and Panasonic and DirecTV to support the stereoscopic RealD Format for the delivery and display of high definition 3D images.
 
Following through with its new mission of transparency, The FCC also announced the relaunch of Reboot.fcc.gov, built to foster the sharing of relevant information and data with the public.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Bandwidth constraints are spurring innovations on the media delivery front. Motorola introduced a set-top accessory enabling users to securely put recorded subscription video content on mobile devices. The Motorola Mover, winner of a CES Innovation Award, connects to a DVR set-top with a secure IP connection and applies DRM rules as content is transferred. Converted content can than be downloaded for viewing on a PC, personal media player or mobile phone without needing a network connection. Comcast is now working with Motorola to integrate the solution on select set-top boxes.
 
Plastic Logic
unveiled its long-promised Que e-reader for business professionals, slated to ship in mid-April at 2 price points: a $649, 4GB model with the capacity to hold 35,000 documents and a $799, 8GB version that holds 75,000 documents. The 4GB version will operate over Wi-Fi, but the 8GB model will run on both Wi-Fi and 3G networks from AT&T with no additional monthly subscription fee.
 
Google introduced a new “near me now” feature to its GPS-powered mobile search application that allows you to look for local businesses business just a short walk away from where you currently are.
 
Hillcrest Labs demonstrated its Loop Pointer technology at CES last week, a wireless remote control solution that enables users to select from a menu of photos, music selections or content sites on a TV screen my waving a pointer around the screen.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
The range of advanced 3D HDTV’s on display at CES this year was dizzying, as was the number of different application platforms. But one manufacturer, Toshiba, has differentiated itself by investing in a robust cell engine processor for their new line of 3D-capable HD sets. The processor is capable of displaying impressive 3D depth and converting 2D content including DVDs, Blu-rays, cable/satellite images or uploaded family photos into the 3D, meaning users won’t have to rely on what’s likely to be a trickle of 3D fare to be able to enjoy the functionality. The TVs will also add a cool Minority Report-style motion sensor next year that allows you move windows around and interact with applications with the wave of your hand. The company has already signed a few widget integrations with Yahoo, Vudu, Facebook and Twitter, for instance, that will be accessible when 55” and 65” versions of the sets launch later this year. But unlike existing platforms like Yahoo TV Apps, which are based on the Java programming language, the cell engine’s processing power has the potential to run far more advanced applications. Mum’s the word on what the price will be, but Toshiba’s Cell TVs are already out in Japan and start at about $10,000.
