Good morning. It’s Monday, January 10, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Harry Potter copyright lawsuit continues in the UK.  Despite a US Judge’s dismissal of the case against Potter publisher Scholastic in the US by the Estate of Adrian Jacobs last week, the Estate’s copyright case against author J.K. Rowling and her UK publisher Bloomsbury continues.  Jacobs Trustee Paul Allen said “This US decision has no legal bearing upon the Estate’s established action in the High Court of England against J.K. Rowling personally and her publishers Bloomsbury over breach of copyright in Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire. That case is scheduled for a 10 day trial in February 2012 when the Estate hopes that evidence and cross examination will be heard in open court for the first time.”  Additionally, the Jacobs Estate is considering an appeal in the US case.

LucasFilm’s Star Wars Saga will be released on Blu-ray in September 2011 in three different set options, most notably as a 9-disc complete six movie set, from Fox Home Entertainment.  Yep, this does mark the first time that all six of George Lucas’ Star Wars movies (Episodes I-VI) will be released in one set.  The complete set includes three additional discs offering 30+ hours of special features, such as never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes.  The Blu-ray options, available for pre-order now in the US and Canada, are as follows:

  • Star Wars: The Complete Saga (9-disc set includes all six movies/US$139.99)
  • Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy (3-disc set, Episodes I-III/US$69.99)
  • Star Wars: Original Trilogy (3-disc set, Episodes IV-VI/US$69.99)

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney XD premieres season two of its live-action series I’m In The Band on Monday, January 17, with a special hour-long episode (7-8p) featuring guest star NFL Hall of famer Jerry Rice.  Ahead of the new season’s debut, DisneyXD.com will launch a new “Rock-On-A-Thon, an Olympic-style game where users can help Iron Weasel compete in events to prove their ultimate rock ‘n roll credibility.  Additionally, January 17 kids can create their own custom Iron Weasel music videos on the website.  Created by Michael B. Kaplan (Frasier, Girlfriends) and Ron Rappaport (Date My Mom) and executive-produced by Kaplan and Richard Gurman (Married…with Children, Still Standing), I’m In The Band is produced by It’s A Laugh Productions.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products unveils its merchandising and retail program for Fox‘s new 3D animated feature film Rio.  From the makers of Ice Age, Rio will open wide on April 15, 2011.  Many of the Rio products will be available exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores and Toysrus.com, and the retailer will feature products based on the movie in special Rio areas. The Rio merchandising program will kick-off mid-March just ahead of the movie’s release.  Named as the global toy partner for the movie, ToyQuest has developed a line of figurines, plush and beanie toys, which will be available exclusively via Toys “R” Us and its website.  Other partners include THQ, which will release its Rio video game just before the movie opens, HarperCollins will publish storybooks based on the movie, and Hallmark will release a line of cards with sound.  Other retailers will offer the t-shirt and sportswear line for boys and girls from JEM Sportswear and Awake, Inc.  Rio features a voice cast including Anne Hathaway, Tracy Morgan, George Lopez, Jesse Eisenberg, and Jamie Foxx along with original songs from Will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas), bossa nova legend Sergio Mendes and a film score composed by John Powell  (Happy Feet).

Scholastic Media completes two new licensing deals for its franchise I Spy.

  • Scholastic Media expands its rights deal with Briarpatch for the worldwide distribution of I Spy games and puzzles.  Briarpatch will showcase I Spy at the upcoming Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair.  It plans to introduce five new I Spy products this year, including the I Spy Spectacular: The 20th Anniversary Edition board game, which will debut simultaneous to Scholastic’s release of a new book of the same name.
  • Under a new deal Kellogg’s will introduce new I Spy-branded fruit snacks.  The I Spy Little Numbers packaging will feature an I Spy-inspired rhyme.  Additionally, after January 24, consumers can log onto Kellogg’s site snackpicks.com ( www.snackpicks.com) to enter an I Spy A Celebration 20th anniversary sweepstakes and take part in other I Spy activities.

Sakar International enters into two new licensing deals for the Gummy Bear brand and Monster High.  Sakar teams with the Gummy Bear brand for a new line of Gummy-textured electronics under a deal with Street Players Holding Corporation.  The line will include molded bear-shaped earbuds, bear-adorned phone and gaming cases, and will be available in a range of gel candy colors.  Other products will include MP3 players, walkie talkies and digital photo frames.  A digital camera will feature a translucent look featuring a molded game stylus and the Gummy Bear form in 3D.  Sakar inks a licensing deal with Mattel for youth electronics based on Mattel’s new Monster High property.

In Singapore, EZ-Link launches a special edition of Care Bears FEVO Prepaid MasterCards ( www.fevocard.com ), in partnership with American Greetings Properties (AGP).  The collection includes seven individual designs featuring a different Care Bear on each card, and each card bundled with a plush toy of the same Care Bears character and offered in a gift box.
