Early demand for Verizon‘s version of the iPhone is hot and heavy, as both Verizon and Apple sold out of their pre-sale stocks of the device. (Both stopped taking pre-orders of the iPhone 4 less than 24-hours after they began, but will resume selling online again starting Feb. 9.) Verizon, which said it set a record for first-day sales, is already taking steps to prepare to curb the data appetites of its heaviest (iPhone and non-iPhone) users; a new memo on its site reserves the right to immediately cut usage of its top 5% of data users in order to free up network capacity for everyone else. The policy is a retreat from its initial announcement that iPhone users won’t be subject to bandwidth caps.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

Fake sports news site OnionSportsNetwork, a joint venture between The Onion and Viacom’s Comedy Central, ramped up its touch-in-cheek coverage of the Super Bowl yesterday with live Twitter feeds, news briefs, blog posts and one-second ad submissions. Comedy Central’s “Onion SportsDome” show, airing tomorrow night at 10:30 pm ET, will wrap up coverage of the big game.
 
A&E reports registering its best month yet in Jan. in terms of online visits and video views, driven by the performance of 7 shows – Heavy, Hoarders, Intervention, Beyond Scared Straight, The First 48, Dog The Bounty Hunter and Storage Wars. Visits were up 21% vs. Jan. 2010; page views were up 34% y/y; and video views increased 44% from a year earlier, according to the network.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Video search engine Blinkx has released a TV Application Programming Interface (API) to enable connected TV app makers to access the company’s massive 35 million hour archive of online video. Blinkx’ web-based API accounts for 2/3 of its search volume and its mobile API, released last summer, has been picked up to power mobile video search by Samsung and EVRI.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Tivo
introduced a new website enabling brand managers, CMOs and other industry insiders to analyze how effective a brand’s TV commercials are at retaining viewers and how well they perform relative to competing brands. Based on Tivo’s Stop||Watch second-by-second ratings service, the Ad Scorecard site allows brands to compare retention rates among broadcast, cable or combined outlets.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Hulu CEO Jason Kilar’s blog post about the future of TV has rustled feathers of the top brass of the company’s corporate owners and may lead to his ouster, according to a Business Insider report.
 
Online health and wellness platform OrganizedWisdom.com announced a new partnership with Readers Digest. The site will power the newly relaunched RD.com with a search-driven program to provide patients with information before, during, and after a doctor visit.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Cell phones are the most popular electronic gadget among American adults, according to a new study from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, with 85% of all adults owning mobile handsets. Laptops have become more popular than desktop computers among the Millennial crowd (aged 18-34,) with 70% of this demo owning a laptop vs. 57% who own a desktop. Other findings include:

  • Almost half of all adults own an iPod or other mp3 player, but these are also most popular with Millennials – 74% of adults ages 18-34 own an mp3 player, compared with only 56% of Gen Xers (ages 35-46)
  • Game consoles are uniformly popular with all adults ages 18-46, 63% of whom own one
  • 5% of adults own an e-book reader, and 4% own an iPad or other tablet computer
  • Tablet computers, such as the iPad, are most popular with American adults age 65 and younger; 4% of all adults own this device

 
Online retail spending reached a record $43.4 billion for Q4 2010, according to ComScore, up 11% versus a year ago representing a 5th straight quarter of e-commerce spending growth. The top-performing online product categories were Computer Software (excl. PC Games), Consumer Electronics, Books & Magazines (excl. digital downloads), Computers/Peripherals/PDAs, and Toys & Hobbies, each growing at least 15% during the quarter. Eighty-four percent of U.S. internet users conducted an online transaction in Q4 2010, up from 78% last year.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
The BBC has chosen Google’s Chrome web store to launch its first web app, based on the BBC’s London-based Good Food brand. The free app allows users to view prep videos and download over 160 recipes including Shrimp Curry in a Hurry, Steak & Kidney Pie – each battle tested in the Good Food kitchen. The recipes are geared toward the health conscious with over 35 clocking in with 200 calories or less.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Interactive TV expert Mike Bloxham is leaving his post as Director of Insight & Research at Ball State’s Center for Media Design to join an undisclosed start-up. His post has been filled by Associate Director and Lead Researcher, Dr. Michael Holmes, who has already begun assuming day-to-day management duties of the center.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
The “Sports on Facebook” thematic page has gotten into the Superbowl ad derby with Facebook Replay, posting many ads before they actually aired on Sunday and encouraging users to vote on their favorites. (Click the “like” button before Wed. to have your vote count toward the final results, which will be announced on Thur.) Marketers have reached new heights combining social media efforts with their expensive $3 million/spot Super Bowl ads this year, none more than Mercedes Benz and its clever Tweet Race. Four teams were selected to drive across the country from 4 different locations to Dallas, each team collecting Twitter followers via the MBtweetraceHQ and earning points for each tweet or retweet performed. (The videos created for the campaign are quite funny – German engineers have ostensibly rigged the cars to actually run on Tweets and retweets as they’re posted.) The winning drivers, “Team S,” racked up over 131k points in their trek from LA and won a pair of 2012 C-Class Coupes for their effort.
