Good morning. It’s Monday, February 6, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Were you ready for some football? Heck of a game and a good win by Pittsburgh.  Now, forget about the game a second and let’s talk about the commercials.  In previous years, I’ve provided for you here the Turner House picks of the night.  As the kids get older and the “test kitchen” shrinks, we found ourselves for the first time ever at a Super Bowl Party.  Why no parties in the past? Clearly, we had no friends, but that’s neither here nor there.  This year, the most adult group we were with chose two advertisers as the standouts, with a couple of honorable mentions.  The two top choices were the AmeriQuest ads – zapping a fly with a defibrillator in the ER, and the airplane turbulence; and the Michelob Dark spot where the pretty young blonde was severely tackled in the friendly game of touch football.  These two advertisers got the biggest and most favorable responses.  Honorable mentions to: Fed Ex Cave Man, Diet Pepsi stunt double, Nationwide Fabio Shampoo, Budweiser horse pulls the wagon with a little help from his friends, and MacGyver’s Mastercard (sentimental favorite).  As for those this crowd thought stunk:  Burger King’s Whopperettes and the Hummer 3 which encouraged such groans such as “oh, that’s disgusting”.   Most compelling promo for the night?  Grey’s Anatomy “we have a Code Black”.  All in all, the general consensus were the commercials were very “safe” this year and were almost entirely “like watching a kids show.”

The Music.  Did the group like the idea the Rolling Stones were censored twice?  Of course not, but it also didn’t detract from the halftime show and amazement these guys can still move the way they do.  Best comment came from Mick Jagger when he introduced the song Satisfaction – “we could’ve done this at Super Bowl One!”  As for the pre-game show it was a simple case of too many people and too little time.  And as for the singing of the anthem, the group all agreed that a straight forward belting out of the anthem is much preferred over the lounge version.

*MORE GOOD STUFF*

On Friday President Bush selected Robert M. McDowell, an attorney and lobbyist for the telecommunications industry, to fill the vacant seat on the Federal Communications Commission. If approved by the Senate, McDowell will weigh the FCC in favor a Republican majority by 2-3.  McDowell would fill the seat left empty when Kathleen Q. Abernathy’s term ended last year.

Black Family Channel will pre-empt its regularly scheduled programming on February 7 at noon to broadcast the funeral services of civil rights activist, Coretta Scott King.  The channel will air live, uninterrupted and commercial-free coverage of the entire ceremony.  Observances will be held in Lithonia, Georgia.

BET News will air a special tomorrow evening Coretta Scott King: Married to the Missions at 730p, which examines the life, significance and influence of King as a spiritual icon of freedom and equality. The show will be hosted by Carlos Watson.  At the same time, BET.com will stream retrospective video packages, commentary and historic photography of Mrs. King’s life as well as segments of her funeral.

Emmy-nominated editor and music supervisor Adam “Chip” Pauken passed away February 2 after a lengthy illness. Pauken, well-respected in the industry, was a veteran editor and music supervisor of numerous shows including Before They Were Stars (ABC), Television’s Greatest Performances (ABC) and The Fritz Pollard Story (ESPN), which helped get Pollard elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Pauken, 48, is survived by his wife, Carole, two daughters, his mother Connie and brother Chris. Services will be Tuesday, February 7 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gates, Kingsley & Gates Moeller Murphy Funeral Home, 1925 Arizona, Santa Monica, 90404 (310)395-9988. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations, to help offset medical expenses, be made to the Chip Pauken Trust Account c/o Nash Entertainment,1438 N. Gower St. Box 10 Hollywood, CA  90028.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

CBS has ordered up a drama called Smith which will star Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen, Franky G and Amy Smart and written/exec produced by John Wells, from Warner Bros. TV The story is told from the point of view of a band of the criminals.

ABC has ordered up a drama pilot called Daybreak and is currently talking with Taye Diggs to star. This project is from Touchstone TV.

Also at ABC, two comedies have been given pilot orders:

  • I Love Things I Hate About You from 20th Century Fox TV is about relationships.  This order is cast contingent.

Casting notes …

ABC has cast several roles in a couple of its upcoming pilots:

  • In the untitled drama pilot which follows a 52-hour hostage crisis.  Scott Wolf, Lourdes Benedicto and Jessica Collins. This project comes from Warner Bros. TV and creators Hank and K.J. Steinberg.
  • Hollis and Rae, a drama pilot about a prosecutor and a cop who are also best friends, the title roles have gone to Laura Harris and Jaime Ray Newman.

An un-casting – Dylan McDermott has opted out of CBS‘ comedy project 3 Lbs. from CBS Paramount Network TV, which is being reworked, and is now looking for a new lead and a new title.  Originally this show was about a neurosurgeon who was looking for someone to replace him in his practice as he feared his own mind may not be as sharp as it once was.
