Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/27/12

Good morning. It’s Monday, February 27, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.

According to Nielsen, about one-third of U.S. consumers streamed long-form video content, such as a TV show or a movie, from the web through a paid subscription service, at the end of 2011. Nielsen also dove into researching who is watching content through the two dominant web streaming subscription services, Hulu Plus and Netflix. In terms of age, 31% of Hulu users are between the ages of 18 and 34 and more than a third are over the age of 50; 40% of Netflix users are in the 18 to 34 age demographic with only 17% over 50. In terms of, 57% of Netflix’s audience and 59% of Hulu’s audience is female. Women also account for 64% of total time spent watching content on Hulu and Netflix. Nielsen tags the gender data as something of interest; in its recent Cross-Platform Report, Nielsen had found that women stream less online video overall than men. And in terms of race, three-fourths of both the Hulu and Netflix audience is white, while more Hispanics are using Netflix (16%) than Hulu (11%).

E! Entertainment has launched an iOS app for Fashion Police, which will feature video content from the show, as well as additional video segments available exclusively through the app. Other features include interactive polls, the ability to link up the app with users’ Facebook and Twitter accounts and “Joan Jabs,” an interactive soundboard through which users can “ask Joan Rivers” to judge a particular outfit.

Cheer Channel will debut Secret Diary of an American Cheerleader, an original web series about a competitive cheerleader, this April on Cheerchannel.com and its affiliate channels. The scripted drama series, which will consist of six to eight webisodes, will also be syndicated across other platforms, including Vimeo, Blip and Grab Networks. The series is written and produced by Aaron Mendelsohn (Air Bud, as well as numerous web series for the likes of Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Coca-Cola and more).

Velti, a mobile marketing and ad solutions company, is reportedly developing the first “do not track” button for mobile, according to TechCrunch. Consumers will be provided a website that they can access through their mobile browsers, which will then add their smartphone to a database of devices that do not want to receive targeted ads. Velti could announce this offering as early as this week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. At the same time, TechCrunch reports that Velti is also developing a new way to track smartphones that would bypass the use of UDIDs, which are long identification codes unique to each iPhone that were used by mobile ad networks to identify and target consumers. Last year, Apple announced that it would stop the use of UDIDs on its mobile devices.

Bender/Helper Impact, a U.S.-based entertainment content, products and technology marketing agency, and indigo pearl, a German-based marketing agency, have announced the launch of The Surround Group, a new international communications venture that will be focused on entertainment, media and consumer technologies. Among the services the integrated agency will offer clients include video content creation, full website and app development, social media services and consulting, digital marketing and more.

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

Apple has purchased Chomp, a California-based start-up that is powers a search and discovery platform for apps. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. The acquisition, which according to reports will inevitably lead to the discontinuation of Chomp’s services and solutions for the Android operating system, has been struck to build out a better search and recommendations platform for the Apple App Store, which currently boasts over 500,000 mobile apps. The deal was first reported by TechCrunch.

In other Apple news, Proview, a Chinese company that used to own the rights to the “iPad” name, has filed suit against the company in California, alleging that Apple acted “with oppression, fraud and/or malice” in order to acquire the iPad trademark, reports The Wall Street Journal. Proview had originally sold the trademark rights to the iPad name for $55,000, but due to these new allegations, is seeking more than $2 billion in compensation from the company through litigation. Apple is arguing that it purchased the name through fair means, and reportedly has numerous documents, including a contract signed by Proview explicitly stating that the company will hand over rights to the iPad name, backing their case up.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Following its estimate about Facebook ad revenues from late last week, eMarketer projects worldwide social ad revenue growth to reach nearly 50% this year over last, with advertisers predicted to spend $7.72 billion on social networks over the course of 2012. eMarketer believes that the growth rate will begin to dip over the next several years as social network ad spend hits close to $12 billion by 2014. Breaking it down by market, eMarketer finds that almost half (47%) of social network ad revenues will come from the U.S. in 2012, with U.S. spend set to reach $3.63 billion, up from $2.54 billion in 2011. The U.S. is expected to maintain its dominant share of social network ad spend through the forecast period, climbing to as much as $5.59 billion by 2014.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Facebook is touting its own ability to be an effective vehicle for app discovery. “Facebook has 425 million monthly mobile users, and the platform sends more than 60 million visitors every month to apps and games,” said James Pearce, head of mobile developer relations, in a blog post on Facebook. He goes on to say that, on mobile platforms today, “distribution is often a function of ranking and positioning in curated app stores. While this benefits established apps and (apps) that are editorially featured, for the majority of developers, getting an app discovered can present a real challenge.” To that end, Pearce argues the power of “social distribution,” where users can engage and then re-engage with apps when they see their friends using them on the site. And with Open Graph powering Facebook Timeline, as well as the ability to introduce Single Sign On for mobile and web apps, users are routinely seeing their friends’ activity with integrated apps wherever and however they access Facebook, which as mentioned earlier, can often be via their smartphones.

Speaking of Facebook, Best Western now allows travelers to reserve hotel rooms directly from its Facebook page. It is an extension of a digital booking functionality that is already available on the company’s mobile site and apps for iOS and Android. The company launched a Best Western Rewards mobile site last year in order to allow club members to manage their profiles, review balances and redeem points.

~ EXEC MOVES ~

In conjunction, Tremor also announced the hiring of Stacey Wisnom as its new Entertainment Category Director, who will serve as the video strategist for Tremor’s entertainment clients, as well as the appointments of Josh Pool to Entertainment Sales Director and Amanda Weil as Entertainment Sales Manager.

Producer Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, Grey’s Anatomy) has launched a new website for people seeking internships in highly competitive industries such as film and television, music, sports, theatre, advertising/PR, tech, the web fashion and publishing. Intern Sushi features over 1,500 available internships, which can be found in cities spanning the U.S., from NY to LA, from Chicago to Miami, at companies like Warner Music Group, Lionsgate and FunnyOrDie.com (a full list is on the site). The site also has a different idea in mind when it comes to the application process. Users create a digital profile, which can include a one-minute introductory video, as well as other multimedia elements such as photos, digital assets and/or samples of their work, in order to provide a more in-depth “snapshot of who they are.” The site also offers more information about the industries through exclusive written and video content via its “Industry Insiders” section. And finally, Intern Sushi says it provides a more interactive hiring process as users can track the status of their application, while hiring managers can use built-in social media tools to keep in touch with applicants and new hires. While free, an $8.99/month premium membership will get you early access to new openings and information.
