Cynopsis: Kids!

02/25/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, February 25, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The 80th Annual Academy Awards were handed last night live on ABC from the Kodak Theatre in LA.  Among the winners were bests in Animated Feature Film of the Year, which was awarded to Brad Bird for Disney’s Ratatouille.  In the Animated Short Film, BreakThru Films (UK), Se-ma-for Studios Production (Poland), Director, Suzie Templetom and Producer, Hugh Welchman won for their stop-motion animated short title Peter & the Wolf, based on Prokofiev’s version of Peter and the Wolf.  Also taking home Oscar last night is the special effects team for The Golden Compass, a New Line movie in association with Ingenious Film Partners, which by the way surprisingly (at least to me) won out over Transformers (DreamWorks and Paramount movie in association with Hasbro), as well as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (Disney).  A full list of nominees and winners can be found at www.oscar.com.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

It seems that Director David Yates will return to helm the final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, according to a blog by author Lois Lowry’s on her website.  Yates is supposed to direct Lowry’s noted (and great) book The Giver, which if they the Yates new is true and Lowry and company decide to wait, would be postpone The Giver.  That said, Warner Bros., the studio behind the Potter movies, has yet to confirm Yates for the last picture. Yates directed Harry Potter and the Order Of The Phoenix and the upcoming Half-Blood Prince.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel will bow three new pre-school aimed music videos from the rock band Imagination Movers, ahead of the like titled series that is currently in production, and will also take Bunnytown to a Monday-Friday schedule:

  • The music videos, from the New Orleans-based Imagination Movers rock band, begin debuting Saturday, March 8.  Additionally, Walt Disney Records is set to release a collection of songs titled Juice Box Heroes, which includes the songs from the three music videos, on March 18.
  • Playhouse Disney will strip the preschool series, Bunnytown, beginning Monday, March 24 at 10a.  New episodes of Bunnytown will premiere each day during the first week in its new home, including an episode celebrating King Bunny’s birthday on Tuesday, March 25.  Created by David and Adam Rudman and Todd Hannert, Bunnytown is produced by Elstree Film Studios in the UK.

Marvel.com reports that a trailer for the upcoming Iron Man movie will debut during next week’s episode of Lost on ABC, February 28at 9p.

ABC will air the annual Peanuts special, It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown, on Tuesday, March 18 at 8p.  Produced by cartoonist/creator Charles M. Schulz, the holiday special made its original debut on March 25, 2005

MARKETING/LICENSING

Papercutz is set to publish a quarterly series of graphic novels based on Bionicle, Lego’s boy-targeted action figure line.  The first title in the series, Bionicle 1 Rise of the Toa Nuva, featuring the origin story, will be available from May 2008.  Published in hardcover and paperback, the Bionicle graphic novel series includes reprints of stories created for Lego’s Bionicle club, which have not appeared in print for several years.
