Good morning, it’s Monday, February 25, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Prepare for another bargaining session played out in the media. Electronic Arts went public with its unsolicited bid for troubled Grand Theft Auto game publisher Take-Two Interactive, increasing its offer to $26/share or $2 billion after an earlier bid of $25/share was rejected. EA is out to reclaim its spot as the leading US game software producer, which it lost when Vivendi signed an agreement to purchase Activision late last year. Take-Two has had its hands full in recent years, defending the violent and racy content of its games, correcting accounting irregularities and attempting to diversify its portfolio. But its Grand Theft Auto IV game, due out in late April, has had gamers salivating for months.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

Seattle-based Getty Images struck a deal with Lionsgate to license its library of film scores and soundtracks to third parties, beginning with the score for 3:10 to Yuma and followed by music from Madmen, Weeds, Crash and Monster’s Ball. The deal is the first in what Gettyimages.com hopes will be an expansion of its commercial music platform, already strong in alternative music.

CBS is reporting an increase of 92% in monthly uniques for its music-themed social networking site Last.fm since the site launched its free on demand music service, supplied by all 4 major music labels. CBS claims Last.fm now receives more than 21 million users worldwide per month.
 
Sports Illustrated says its multimedia Swimsuit edition garnered more than 228 million page views during its first 10 days online (an increase of 41% from 2007). The digital spread set new standards for traffic, engagement (over 6 minutes per user), page views per user (31) and overall unique visitors (5.4 million), according to internal Omniture figures. New features include a mash-up tool that allows users to mix images of 4 or their favorite models.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Oddcast is deploying its Voki speaking avatar platform on Entercom radio stations across the country, allowing users to participate in social forums and networks using their own personalized avatar. Entercom stations have been using the platform for contests and promotions during the past 8 weeks, reporting a 33% repeat user ratio and a weekly growth rate of over 20%. Participating stations include KWOD in Sacramento, CA; 1080 The Fan in Portland, OR; B93.7 in Greenville, NC; The End in Seattle, WA and WMMM in Madison, WI.
 
AOL’s video search engine Truveo signed an additional 6 international partners from China, Brazil, India, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The FCC will hit the road this week to hear evidence about Internet Service Providers’ restrictive practices, beginning with a session at Harvard Law today. The FCC also appears to be backing down on its policy to require local TV stations to air as many as a dozen PSAs per day about next year’s digital switch. Station groups have expressed concern about lost revenue during peak hours.
 
The Ed Markey-chaired Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet scheduled an open hearing to discuss the net neutrality bill this Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Click here to connect to the audio webcast, powered by Stream OS.
 
Hearst-Argyle Television reported total revenue of $755.7 million for 2007, down approximately 4% from 2006, partly due to a $30.9 million decrease in net political revenue. Digital media revenue continued to be a growth area, however, increasing 35% to $20.9 million.

opened the doors of a brand new state-of-the-art media lab last Thursday night, designed to test consumer behavior in the areas of broadband, PPV, video on demand, wireless and gaming usage.

Microsoft
President of Platforms and Services Division Kevin Johnson sent a memo to employees published by The Wall Street Journal outlining the reasoning behind its play for Yahoo.  He also attempts to assuage fears the acquisition would be a rebuke of Microsoft’s own work in search and online advertising.
 
“For advertisers and publishers, scale economics would allow us to deliver more value to this customer base,” wrote Mr. Johnson. “By combining search and non-search advertising inventory on a single ad platform, yield is also improved. The other benefits and opportunities may include improving return on investment and decreasing the cost and complexity of running multiple campaigns. We also believe in an extensible ad platform. From my discussions with top advertising agency executives, they share this belief and want to play a key role in extending this ad platform for incremental value to advertisers.”

Ripe Digital Entertainment upped Steven Voci to SVP/Sales and Tim Wesley to SVP/Business Development and Operations. Both will continue reporting to Ripe founder and CEO Ryan Magnussen in Los Angeles.
