Good morning, it’s Monday, February 18, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The death knell of Toshiba’s HD DVD format sounded on Friday when Wal-Mart decided to stock only Blu-ray DVDs and DVD players from now on. The manufacturer is expected to announce it is officially abandoning the format as early as this week, after trying to put a positive spin on the loss of Warner Bros. as a supporter.
Yahoo relaunched its video portal featuring a new look and a brand new embeddable, higher quality video player. The site features user generated content more prominently, along with exclusive content broken down by genre including sports, movies and music.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Kid-focused social networking site kidthing struck a content partnership with children’s publisher Charlesbridge Publishing to distribute its educational books through the platform, such as best sellers First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg and Bugs For Lunch by Margery Facklam.
The newly revamped, reduced-in-price Apple TV set-top is out in stores after a short delay, enabling standard and Hi-Def iTunes movie rentals to be viewed on the big plasma in your living room. Standard def movies rent for $3.99 for new releases and $2.99 for library titles. HD movies (1280 x 720) cost $4.99/$3.99. The user interface allows you to browse through thumbnail images of available titles from most of the major studios and start watching them within seconds (provided you enjoy a broadband connection exceeding 6 MB/second.)
The MPAA filed copyright infringement suits in China against P2P file sharing service Xunlei Networking Technology after repeated warnings to remove protected movies.
A group of eBay activists have organized a boycott of the site this week to protest the rollout of new pricing policies and a revamping of the site’s feedback system that makes it impossible to leave negative feedback about buyers.
RadioShack is launching a DTV transition program in nearly 5,000 of its retail outlets this week where customers can begin cashing in their new $40 Digital Tuner coupons expected to go out in the mail any day. RadioShack is selling two different converter boxes as well as other gear necessary to split signals to multiple sets.
Gannett Co., Hearst Corp., The New York Times Co. and the Tribune Co. have banded their local market newspaper and local TV sites together to form a national online ad network to expand their reach for national advertisers as well as allow them to drill down to individual local markets. QuadrantONE, based in Chicago, will offer an initial combined reach of 50 million unique visitors, according to Dec. 2007 Nielsen/Net Ratings figures, including 27 of the top 30 DMAs. The company is also inviting outside affiliates to join.
Google is testing a new web search feature, adding video ads on some pages of search results. Ads with accompanying videos contain a small plus icon that users must click on to view the video.
Verizon and its ad agency McCann Erickson, New York hired Michael Bay to be its pitchman in a new series of ads for Verizon’s Fiber-to-the-home based FiOS TV and FiOS high-speed internet services.
Nielsen estimates some 13 million U.S. households are not ready for prime time – in digital that is – in that they contain no digital sets or no converter boxes equipped to decode digital broadcasts. About 10% of all U.S. homes would have no access to TV signals if the transition occurred today and another 16.8% of households have at least one analog set that will not work after the switch.
Here are some more details from Nielsen Online’s first combined panel and server measurements from December. The inaugural VideoCensus findings showed:
- Women 18-34 turned to network TV web sites 22% of the time to watch their favorite shows (vs. 12% for men)
- Men 18-34 watched video on user generated sites 27% of the time (vs. 11% for women)
- There was relatively little viewer overlap among network sites, but most MySpace, Veoh and Break.com viewers also watched videos on YouTube
- Online video prime time falls between the lunch hours of 12 – 2pm for network TV sites, and late night on the weekends for users generated content

While Will Ferrell’s Funny or Die Comedy Tour packs them in across the country, New Line‘s digital team is doing its part to promote the upcoming Semi Pro with a fun Flash-based site full of video trailers, downloads and games. The Spin King game tests users’ ability to spin an ABA-style ball by using a mouse. Roller Disco Dunk awards points for creative, mid-air moves on the way to the basket. Slam-Dunk contest winner Dwight Howard has got nothing on Jackie Moon.
