Not too much of a surprise here as NBC canceled new drama Do No Harm after airing two episodes, on the heels of its being the worst-rated scripted debut ever on a Big Four broadcaster with a 0.9 rating among A18-49 and 3.1 million total viewers. The second episode fared even worse, with a 0.7 rating and 2.2 million total viewers. Encores of Law & Order: SVU will air in the Thursday 10p time slot that Do No Harm occupied this week and next, with a permanent schedule replacement to be announced soon. Starring Steven Pasquale, Do No Harm premiered January 31.
NBC execs will surely be Up All Night now that Christina Applegate announced her departure from the show late last week. Up All Night is currently on hiatus in its second season, in order to revamp its format from single-camera to multi-camera, including new sets to accommodate a live studio audience. “It’s been a great experience, but the show has taken a different creative direction and I decided it was best for me to move on to other endeavors,” Applegate said in a statement. “Working with Lorne Michaels has been a dream come true and I am grateful he brought me into his TV family.” Production on five new episodes is slated to resume this month and the sitcom is scheduled to return to NBC’s lineup in late spring. Up All Night had posted an average 1.3 rating with A18-49 on Thursdays at 830p.
With the changing laws involving marijuana, a new crop of TV shows are being rolled up and out. Discovery Channel is dubbing the middle week night as “Weed Wednesdays” consisting of the recently announced Weed Country, set to debut on February 20 at 10p preceded by another new series – Pot Cops – at 9p. Pot Cops follows law enforcement officials working in Northern California’s Humboldt County, an area overrun with armed Mexican drug cartels. Pot Cops is produced for Discovery Channel by Hoggard Films.
Fans of the STARZ series Spartacus have a chance to own original props, sets, costumes and more as the network is partnering with ViP Fan Auctions on an online auction. The auction is currently open with new items from the series offered each week at www.spartacusauctions.com. Spartacus: War of the Damned starring Liam McIntyre in the title role is in its final season airing Fridays at 9p on STARZ.
Programming Alerts: A&E Network is moving the premiere of new series The Governor’s Wife to sometime this summer; date TBA. Duck Dynasty season three will launch February 27 now at 10p.
Discovery Channel’s current #1 series Gold Rush will conclude its third season with a first-time live event on Friday, February 22 at 8p. In this two-hour live episode, one of the Gold Rush crew finally strikes it rich.
IFC renewed its original series Comedy Bang! Bang! that spoofs the late night talk show format for a second season consisting of 20 episodes, which is double the first season order. Hosted by comedian/writer and podcast host Scott Aukerman, the first ten episodes of the second run will debut in third quarter 2013 with the following ten scheduled to air in fourth quarter. Production is currently underway in Los Angeles. Comedy Bang! Bang! is produced by Abso Lutely Productions for IFC with Aukerman and Dave Kneebone as EPs.
Discovery Channel’s series Yukon Men is back with all-new episodes starting February 22 at 10p along with the special Yukon Men Pre-Show airing on February 19 at 10p. The series follows the people who inhabit the tiny remote village of Tanana, Alaska. Paper Route Productions, Inc. is behind the series produced for Discovery Channel.

Late Submission Deadline: February 27, 2013

With Tyler Perry producing two scripted shows on OWN, it seems to be a whole new world for the network, which is known for its real-life, timely interviews with the likes of Lance Armstrong. So how does one explain the swing between such different focuses? OWN President Sheri Salata (who serves along with Prez Erik Logan) has the answer. “It’s not all that different from the Oprah show,” says Salata. “It’s a wide lane; through the lens of Oprah’s intention, you can just about do anything. The network showed its beating heart last year, and now we want some funnies. That’s where Tyler comes in.”
ITV in the UK is moving forward with another season of its period drama series Mr. Selfridge. Season two will be produced by ITV Studios with Jeremy Piven reprising his role as visionary American entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge. Ten one-hour episodes will be produced beginning in April on location in greater London and Kent. Mr. Selfridge airs as part of PBS’ MASTERPIECE in the US.
A new original drama pilot called The Affair is on tap at SHOWTIME from writer/producer Sarah Treem (House of Cards, In Treatment) and co-creator on the project Hagai Levi (In Treatment). The Affairs is about two marriages and an affair that disrupts them. Sarah Treem wrote the one-hour relationship drama and she will serve as EP along with director Mark Mylod.
TBS ordered a pilot titled Do It Yourself, a new sitcom from executive producers and creators Walt Becker (Wild Hogs, Van Wilder) and Rob Long (Cheers, TBS’ Sullivan & Son). Do It Yourself centers on Nick, a 20-something laid-off math teacher who has to take a job at a big box home supply store. The pilot is being produced by TBS.
Production has begun on a third season of TNT’s legal drama Franklin & Bash starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer. This new third season also welcomes Heather Locklear to the cast. The 10-episode third season will premiere this summer and is produced by Four Sycamore Productions, Left Coast Productions and FanFare Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television. Jamie Tarses, Jason Ensler, Kevin Falls, Matthew McGuinness and Bill Chais serve as EPs.
Kim Raver, last seen on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy landed the female lead role on CBS’ potential NCIS: LA spinoff called NCIS: Red. Raver will play Special Agent Paris, the leader of the Red team, who is athletic, smart and witty with a background in forensic science. Raver joins recently announced co-lead John Corbett with the cast also including Scott Grimes, Edwin Hodge and Gillian Alexy. In addition NCIS: LA’s Miguel Ferrer will reprise his role as NCIS assistant director Owen Granger. NCIS: Red will air as a back-door pilot this spring as an episode of NCIS: LA.
Breaking Bad’s Jonathan Banks will next star in NBC’s drama pilot Bloodline. Banks will play Leo Killpreist, the patriarch of an ancient line of killers and mercenaries. Universal Television is producing the drama with David Granziano as script writer and EP along with Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey.
Christina Ricci is giving television another try, this time starring in the NBC comedy pilot Girlfriend in a Coma. The comedy project hails from Liz Brixius (Nurse Jackie) and Dick Wolf (Law & Order: SVU) and is about Karen (Ricci), who after 20 years, wakes up from a coma to find out she has a 17-year old daughter from a pregnancy she was unaware of. Universal Television and Wolf Films are producing the single-camera comedy. Brixius is writing the script and will serve as EP in addition to Wolf, Danielle Gelber and Peter Jankowski. Ricci has recently guest starred on CBS’ The Good Wife and last year starred in the period drama Pan Am on ABC.
Academy Award winner Chris Cooper is set to star in Discovery Channel’s first-ever scripted miniseries Klondike (wt). Cooper will play Father Judge and the miniseries is based on Charlotte Gray’s novel Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike. The miniseries is a co-production between Discovery, Entertainment One Television (eOne) and Nomadic Pictures in association with Scott Free Television. Paul Scheuring is the primary writer and will be an EP alongside Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker. Other EPs include John Morayniss and Michael Rosenberg for eOne; Mike Frislev and Chad Oakes as co-producers for Nomadic. Production begins next month on location in Alberta, Canada. The series will also receive production assistance from the Government of Alberta, Alberta Film Development Program. International distribution will be handled by eOne Television.
