Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Monday, February 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
WGA board members voted unanimously to accept a new three-year contract from the AMPTP that fleshes out a revenue-based formula for compensation in new media. The basic framework of the deal was based on what the DGA won from producers last month: writers will receive a first-ever residual of 1.2% of distributors’ gross for downloaded rentals, .36% of gross receipts for the first 100,000 electronic sell-through downloads of TV shows and .36% of the first 50,000 downloads of feature films. But writers must wait until the third year of the contract to begin earning a 2% share of distributor’s gross from ad-supported streaming of new TV shows over the net. Until then flat fees of $654 (during the first year) and $677 (2nd year) will be paid for hour-long programs and $360/$373 for half-hour shows, following an initial window of 17 days (or 24 days for first-season shows) in which no residual is paid. Writers on both coasts vote on the proposal tomorrow. If the deal is ratified, they could be back to work on Wednesday.
HarperCollins will begin offering free digital copies of some of its books on harpercollins.com today for one month only to try to drum up sales and interest in new platforms such as Amazon’s Kindle reader, according to The New York Times.
NBCU/News Corp. online video joint venture Hulu.com is widening its trial to allow private beta users to invite 10 of their friends to begin testing the service, according to the company blog. Hulu is expected to officially launch later this quarter.
Electronic Arts is launching a new games division called EA Blueprint to develop multiplatform casual games on social networking platforms such as Facebook. Creative Artists Agency is providing talent and funding sources.
Portland Media’s UK-based eSports portal Xleague.TV struck a deal to feature content from US male focused lifestyle channel MavTV, including extreme sports, documentaries and gaming entertainment programming.
Maniatv.com is holding an open casting call looking for hosts for two upcoming online shows. Both male and female hosts are needed for an interview/celebrity show on Hollywood stars as well as a show on the indie music scene. Auditions begin on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 10:00 am at 5907 W. Pico Blvd. in LA. (Check in starts at 8:30 am.)
Yahoo is expected to reject Microsoft’s $44.6 billion offer, complaining that $31/share drastically undervalues the web portal’s worth. Microsoft must now decide how much pressure it wants to exert on Yahoo’s board to accept the offer, a move which could eventually result in a hostile takeover attempt to acquire the company against the board’s wishes. Let the haggling begin.

There may be some truth to the notion that the Writer’s Strike has increased online video viewing. Nearly 141 million users viewed a record 10 billion videos online in the U.S. during the month of December, according to comScore Video Metrix service, with Google’s YouTube once again increasing its share of views and unique viewers. Online viewers watched an average of 203 minutes of online video during the month – a 34% gain since the beginning of 2007 – watching an average of 72 videos of about 2.8 minutes in length each.

Online ad rep firm Gorilla Nation appointed Bill Foltz as its new CFO. Bill was previously a Partner and Managing Principle of Sports-focused VC firm Sports Business Ventures.
Discovery Channel launched an ambitious rich media site designed with EffectiveUI called Discovery Earth Live, allowing users to interact with environmental data sourced from NASA and NOAA in real time. Built on Adobe’s Flex platform, the site informs visitors about climate change by rendering 3D imagery of the earth that tracks changes in water and air temperatures as well as the build up of chemical emissions over time. It takes a little while to get the hang of, but the program is a great example of how a visual interface can be used to display different forms of content.
