Good morning, it’s Monday, December 3, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Facebook finally caved in and agreed to amend the privacy problems inherent in the Beacon purchase recommendation ad program. Users must now give their consent on their profile page before their Beacon info goes out over the network instead of it being shared by default. However, Facebook stopped short of letting members opt out all together. The decision comes as some of the program’s charter advertisers like Coke are dropping out worried about user backlash.
AOL struck a deal with Amazon to replace its download-to-own video service launched last October with Amazon’s Unbox service, offering TV shows and movies at price points similar to those found on iTunes. The two companies will share revenue generated from the integration.
Tribune, which just received FCC approval to move forward with its plans to go private, is also launching several branded YouTube channels sourcing content from its papers and local TV stations. The Chicago Tribune, The Orlando Sentinel, WGN in Chicago, KTLA in Los Angeles and WPIX in New York will each have ad supported channels featuring video content produced locally.
Asian broadcaster Star is launching 3 Mandarin-language channels on KyLinTV‘s subscription-based IPTV platform in the coming months, available to users in the U.S. and Canada. Taiwan’s Star Chinese Channel launched on Dec. 1, featuring dramas, game shows, talk, lifestyle and variety series. A movie channel and music channel will also be added in the coming weeks.
Host of TLC‘s Fashionably Late with Stacy London and What Not To Wear launched her own mobile site with Sprint profiling phones that match current fashions. The site features interactive quizzes to help determine what phone is right for each user. Sprint’s $9.99 Xtra service also features live simulcasts of Stacy’s TLC shows.
The winning entries of Lifetime Movie Network‘s inaugural Student Filmmaker Competition will premiere on the network on Tuesday, Dec. 11 and will be available for streaming on lmn.tv. Liliana Greenfield-Sanders won first place for “Anna,” about a young woman who struggles to connect with the people she encounters in the East Village of New York City.
Facebook received $240 million in investment capital from Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing, according to The Wall Street Journal’s All Things D blog. Li is making the investment from an entity separate from Cheung Kong Holdings Ltd. and Hutchinson Whampoa Ltd., two of Asia’s largest holding companies.
Social media content aggregator Flux.com unveiled Flux Lite and Flux Custom, tools to help online publishers distribute content across social networking sites. The tools also support distribution of digital ads embedded within the content.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Vivendi Games is acquiring a controlling stake in Activision purchasing $4 billion worth of its shares for a 68% share in the company. Activision Blizzard – the company’s new moniker – estimates their combined revenue will total $3.8 billion in 2007, a hair above the $3.7 billion Electronics Arts is projecting, making it the largest video game publisher not directly affiliated with a hardware maker. The move also gives Activision’s Guitar Hero a pipeline to a major record label: Vivendi’s Universal Music Group.
Facebook filed two legal motions against independent magazine 02138 over privacy issues of all things. The magazine, which targets Harvard grads, published an expose about the origins of the social networking company containing personal information about founder Mark Zuckerberg, including his social security number, the name of his girlfriend and the address of his parents’ house in New York. The information was sourced from documents related to an ongoing dispute between ConnectU Inc. and Facebook regarding who really invented the site, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Google confirmed it would in fact participate in the FCC’s upcoming auction of wireless 700 Mhz spectrum scheduled to being on Jan. 24. Major U.S. wireless carriers are also expected to vie for the spectrum.
Three FCC commissioners voted to limit the number of subscribers a single cable company can serve to 30% of multichannel TV homes. Comcast currently controls about 27% of the pay TV market.
Amazon.com and Pepsi are planning to launch a promotion during the Super Bowl on Feb. 3, giving away millions of MP3 tracks for free, reports Billboard. Pepsi will place certificates inside 5 billion bottle caps, 5 of which can be redeemed on Amazon.com for a free song. The promotion coincides with a looming deadline issued by Wall-Mart to major labels; the retailer is requesting labels make music tracks available in the MP3 format as it transitions from the Windows Media format.

Motorola elected current COO Greg Brown as its new CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2008. He replaces Edward Zander, who will continue as Chairman of the Board of Directors until the company’s annual shareholders meeting in May of 2008.
Vimeo founder Jakob Lodwick announced on his blog he was leaving the HD-focused video sharing site and cutting affiliations with IAC, Connective Ventures and College Humor.com. Co-founder Zach Klein also recently left company.
MTV has really refined web-based social activism with a series of sites designed to encourage users to get involved. ItsYourS*xLife.com is the backbone of an AIDS awareness campaign launched by MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation, featuring tons of online video testimonials and PSAs related to AIDS issues. mtvU.com featured the world premiere of Annie Lennox’s video of “Sing,” a charity digital release with 23 other female acts performed to raise money for the HIV/AIDS Treatment Action Campaign. Finally Think.MTV.com links to activist-related contests and is working on creating its own rewards program to motivate users. It is also the home for the MTV/MySpace user generated Presidential Dialogue series. The John McCain dialogue happens tonight at 7 pm ET.
