Spending on retail sites on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday spiked by a combined 2% this year, according to ComScore as users figured out that the same early bird deals could be had online from the comfort of their own homes. (Reports of tramplings by frenzied shoppers at a Wal-Mart in Long Island and a pair of shooting deaths at a Toys “R” Us in Palm Desert, CA helped make the case for staying home.) A number of retail sites including Amazon.com and Target.com buckled under the surge of traffic, according to the AP. Sears.com was down for a total of 2 hours on Friday.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
This one’s handy if you don’t place your phone too close to that spattering fry pan on your stove. Food Network launched a mobile application powered by Airborne Media offering a full complement of seasonal recipes, cooking tips and video clips from Food Network hosts. The application is available initially on AT&T and Verizon for $3.99/month or for Handango or Handmark smartphones for the one time fee of $19.95. Scripps Networks also announced a new FLO TV channel combining programming from Food Network, HGTV, DIY and Fine Living for AT&T mobile TV customers.
 
Conde Nast’s Brides.com relaunched its popular community section improving navigation and adding several new interactive tools and functions. Upgraded features now allow users to filter threads by wedding location, date, etc. New forums such as “Waiting for the Ring” and “Fashion Focus” introduce new targeted threads. Brides aggregates content from three national magazines – Brides, Modern Bride, Elegant Bride – as well as from 16 local bridal magazines. The site’s community boards average over 1 million uniques/month according to Conde Nast.


~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Web video production start-up For Your Imagination has found a new way to make itself useful during the downturn. FYI has cobbled together an informal distribution network of online video outlets to help producers and prospective advertisers target specific audiences with a potential reach of 60 million aggregate views/month, according to CEO Paul Kontonis. Partnerships with online portals such as Hulu, Joost, Dailymotion and Howcast will allow the company to guarantee sponsors reach using in video endorsements and product placements. New verticals in the areas of personal finance, fashion and style are scheduled to launch in 2009. 


~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Hulu.com performed an internal study offering users the option of viewing one two-minute ad or four 30-second spots, reports AdAge. An amazing 88% of Hulu visitors preferred the long form ads, which are opt in – allowing viewers to select from a variety of 2 minute commercials. Participating sponsors included Columbia TriStar, American Express, Hyatt, Paramount Pictures, Sprint and Capital One.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The deal to combine Clearwire and Sprint’s mobile WiMax internet network officially closed on Friday, clearing the way for the build out of the nation’s first true WiMax wireless broadband network. Intel, Google, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks have collectively invested $3.2 billion in the new company, which will retain the Clearwire name and be based in Kirkland, WA.
 
Microsoft
is in talks to acquire Yahoo‘s search business for a reported $20 billion, according to an unconfirmed report in the Sunday Times. Former AOL CEO Jonathan Miller and former Fox Interactive Media President Ross Levinsohn would lead a new management team to take control of the troubled portal. Several sources, however, are refuting the story.
 
Dissident shareholder Carl Icahn increased his share of Yahoo last week buying up nearly 7 million additional shares. Icahn now owns about 5.5% of the company according to an SEC filing.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Joost answered blip.tv with an IPhone app of its own providing users access to a library of more than 46,000 clips via Wi-Fi or AT&T’s 3G network. The user interface is intuitive and the video quality is good, particularly when connected to a broadband network. Browse for content utilizing the app’s search feature or by selecting popular or editorial picks.
 
Tivo
launched a cross platform mobile website m.tivo.com powered by Mobui that allows Tivo subscribers to program their DVRs remotely. The site allows users to search for programming by actor, title, director and keyword as well as access popular Tivo features including Daily Recommendations and Most Popular selections.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Slingbox’s own Sling.com emerged from private beta to enter the video portal fray. Like countless other destinations, it features a video player streaming full episodes and clips from a broad cross selection of premium and web-only brands including Hulu, CBS, Discovery, Warner Bros., Sony, 60Frames, NHL, CollegeHumor and Break.com. The cool thing here is an integration with the handy place shifting Slingbox device. Sling.com’s Live TV allows you to view broadcast and cable content directly through Firefox or Internet Explorer (with Mac support planned for the near future.) Until now you needed to install a client app, which is problematic if you’re on a public computer. The secret sauce of Sling.com may be social features allowing users to create profiles of their viewing habits for others to follow. The EchoStar subsidiary has served some of the nation’s most tech-savvy early adopters; building a community around them could prove valuable for testing and incubating new applications.   
 
Correction: We reported that Crackle’s new show Star-ving, starring David Faustino, is premiering on Dec 1. It’s actually premiering on January 16. However, Crackle’s The Jace Hall Show debuts today.
