Good morning. It’s Monday, December 17, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Live TV-over-the-web streaming service Aereo, the one backed by IAC and Barry Diller and the one that’s raised the ire of the broadcast networks, has landed its first cable partner: Bloomberg TV. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the service has inked a deal with Bloomberg TV to stream the cable channel’s news content. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. If you recall, Aereo delivers live TV programming over the web via tiny antennas that capture over-the-air signals, which subscribers can access via PCs or mobile devices. The WSJ reports that Aereo’s planned expansion to about 15 new cities (it’s only available in NY right now) should come early next year. The court battles with broadcasters remain ongoing.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Sponsors for the Second Annual IAWTV Awards include CES, Blip, AOL, Warner Bros. Digital, Maker Studios, Dolby Labs, DTS, Taboola, WGA, and SAG-AFTRA, among others. The show, which aims to award and honor the best in original video programming on the web, will be held during the 2013 International CES, on January 8 at the Venetian Theatre in Las Vegas. The independent body has also announced an early bird ticket price of $35, which will be available through December 28, after which the price will jump to $50. The day after the IAWTV Awards, which will be live streamed for those unable to attend, the IAWTV also will also participate in the CES Entertainment Matters Conference. The full-day conference track, titled “The Digital Entertainment Transformation,” will feature speakers from leading web programmers like AOL, Vuguru, YouTube, Alloy Digital, and Machinima, as well as people behind notable web series such as Electric City, H+ The Digital Series, and Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.

Epic Meal Time is one of the most popular channels on YouTube with nearly 3 million subscribers and over 486 million video views to date. Now, with the help of Collective Digital Studios and NextTime Productions, the channel has launched a new web series called Epic Chef, which is being described as “an over-the-top, calorie-filled take on the competitive cooking genre”. If you’re not familiar with Epic Meal Time, the channel is notorious among the college crowd (and like-minded viewers) for cooking up ridiculous, cholesterol-heavy dishes such as meat gingerbread houses and egg rolls the size of a human head. Epic Chef, which will keep that notoriety intact, debuted Friday. The series pits two chefs against each other every week, as part of a bracket-style competition to determine who is, in fact, the most “Epic Chef” of them all. Each episode will feature a themed challenge such as “Epic Burger” or “Epic Mexican,” for which the competitors will have 45 minutes to create a meal worthy of the moniker, only using a box of mystery ingredients and a pantry that they will have access to. Celebrity judges for the series include Duff from Ace of Cakes, Adam Gertler from Next Food Network Star, and a collection of YouTube stars, among others. Competing chefs include former contestants on shows like Top Chef and Iron Chef, as well as other notable food personalities.

Netflix has agreed to expand the fourth season of Arrested Development from 10 episodes to 12-15, according to a report from Deadline. This is because show creator Mitch Hurwitz ended up shooting more material than originally planned, and also came up with some additional ideas for the highly anticipated return of the comedy series. The season is scheduled to arrive on Netflix sometime during spring 2013.

Verizon is bringing programming from the NFL Network and NFL RedZone to FiOS TV Online. Via the newly added Watch NFL Network, FiOS customers who subscribe to the NFL Network and NFL RedZone as part of their TV package now have the ability to watch programming from the two channels from anywhere in the US, with a broadband connection. This includes live streaming access to NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football games, as well as shows like NFL Total Access, NFL GameDay, and the new morning show NFL AM. Access to NFL RedZone, which allows viewers to watch every touchdown of every game on Sunday afternoon, is available on every Sunday during the NFL”s regular season. While currently available online, Verizon plans to bring the Watch NFL Network to tablets “in the future.”

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Unmetric, a provider of social media benchmarking analytics for brands to see how their social practices stack up against their competitors, is now launching a new platform designed specifically for agencies. Similar to its existing tools for brands, the new Unmetric Agency Platform aims to arm agencies with data to see how their current and prospective clients measure up against their competition on popular social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Pinterest. The company says it has restructured its benchmarking tool, which is used by the likes of Subway, Citibank, and Campbell’s, to match an agency’s needs and working model. The Agency Platform allows multiple users to monitor brands relevant to them, and swap them out if necessary. Its database includes over 5,000 global brands. Among the sector-based data available, users can get benchmarking insights on brands’ social media content strategies, engagement, growth, timing, and frequency of use.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Ten different verticals grew mobile ad spend in the third quarter by over 100% year-over-year, with four verticals increasing spending by over 400%, according to the December SMART report from mobile ad company Millennial Media. Most notably, the automotive vertical increased mobile ad spending in Q3 by 574% versus last year. Millennial reports that the top three campaign goals on its platform were focused on ‘driving sustained in-market presence, site traffic, and registrations.” Among the campaigns run on Millennial’s platform in Q3 28% included a social media post-click action and 32% allowed consumers to download an app. In terms of mobile operating system share, over half of the impressions on Millennial’s mobile ad network in Q3 came from Android devices, while iOS devices were responsible for 34% of impressions.

Vik Kathuria, Managing Partner/Corporate Strategy and Digital Investment, MediaCom, has released his list of digital macro trends to pay attention to for 2013. Per his words:

  • Web growth remains strong, digital media could account for 19.5% of measured ad spending globally this year ($99 billion) and 21.4% in 2013 ($114 billion), with respective growth rates of 16% and 15%.
  • Metrics are driving digital growth, which creates a liquid market with transparent pricing signals.
  • Growth in display/video advertising is driven by the continued shift of branded/TV dollars online.
  • A shift towards mobile form factors is resulting in the “appification” of the web.
  • For the first time ever both Black Friday and Cyber Monday surpassed $1 billion in online spending. This is leading to a faster convergence of online and offline shopping, in essence, “e-commerce is growing up”.
  • M&A activity is likely to continue, but with smaller transaction sizes.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

truTV has launched a mobile app for Impractical Jokers in conjunction with the prank series second season debut. The app, which is available for free on iOS and Android devices, offers video clips from the show, refreshed on a regular basis as new episodes air. Other features include a social media integration; a “Soundboard Smorgasbord,” which allows users to replay their favorite catchphrases heard on the show; a doodle pad; and an alert function that reminds users when the show is about to air on TV.

~ EXEC MOVES ~

Machinima has named former AOL and Yahoo exec Debbie Menin as its new VP/Partner Development. She will be tasked with building Machinima’s profile among TV networks to help them “eventize their launches by driving ratings with [Machinima’s] very elusive audience,” said Jay Sampson, EVP/Global Sales, Marketing, and Ad Operations at Machinima. Menin will directly report to Sampson. The male-focused video network also announced that it’s laid off 10% off its staff, mostly from its production division as the company has learned to “streamline its operations in that area,” according to a report from Variety.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Social video discovery app Showyou recently released a major update to its iPad app, which aims to improve the search and viewing experience for users seeking out online videos. The biggest change is a new “intelligent feed,” which is available to users as soon as the app opens up. The feed pulls up videos that would be relevant to the user, including those that were shared, liked, or commented on by their friends on social networks. The app has also been designed to refine its video recommendations based on what’s currently trending as well as what users have clicked on and watched via the app.
