Facebook lawyers said on Friday they have found the “smoking gun” proving that the lawsuit of Paul Celia – the New York man who claims to possess 50% ownership in the company – is based on fraudulent evidence. Instead, Facebook claims they have turned up the “authentic contract” struck between Celia and Mark Zuckerberg, which makes no mention of an ownership share. Celia alleged that he was hired by the social network’s founder through Craigslist to complete computer code on a separate project and that he invested $1,000 for what was then a 50% share in “The Face Book” project.
Viacom‘s lucrative digital content deals with Netflix and Hulu helped to grow revenues by 20% in the U.S. and 16% across the globe, according to its Q3 earnings report. Worldwide affiliate revenues increased 19% to $971 million, largely due to growing digital distribution revenues. In a conference call with analysts, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman claimed that interest in the company’s digital rights remain high. He said he expects affiliate fees from both streaming media concerns and traditional distributors to grow in “high single digital or low double digits” for the foreseeable future.
Netflix announced it has surpassed 1 million subscribers in Canada after launching the $8/mo. streaming-only service North of the border last September.
Online revenue for the Washington Post Co. dropped by 13% during Q2, contributing to an overall 9% drop in revenue for the first half of 2011. Newspaper online revenue declined 3% to $49.1 million for the first six months of 2011, while display online advertising revenue dropped 16% and 4% for Q2 and the first six months of 2011, respectively.
Dick Clark Productions is joining with web production news site Tubefilter.tv to produce the next Streamy Awards event. No word yet on when or where the next Streamys will be held.
The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) is “expressing concern” that ICANN‘s proposal to enable the roll out of customized top-level domain names would allow poachers, brokers and cybersquatters to buy up new domain names that should by rights go to established brands. Specifically, the ANA cites ICANN’s lack of a bottom-up input in the process involving the global internet community, insufficient research and guidance from expert authorities and inadequate oversight by the U.S. Department of Commerce. ANA also pointed to risks for consumers who may be duped by felons posing as known brands.
Thursday’s stock market correction has been particularly hard on high-flying tech stocks and companies that recently went public. Pandora is off over 15% from its IPO price. Shares of professional-themed social network Linkedin, the hottest U.S. IPO since 2006, closed down again on Friday by 4.3% after Morgan Stanley joined JPMorgan Chase (lead managers on the Linkedin IPO) cutting its rating on the stock. The downgrade was made despite better than expected Q2 earnings results – Linkedin grew its membership by 61% y/y to 115.8 million and saw revenue increase y 120% to $121 million.
iTV company Ensequence has completed an integration with technology start-up Zeitera to enable programmers and advertisers to rapidly create, manage and deploy interactive applications running on smartphones and tablets that are synchronized with content on the TV screen. Synchronized apps include:
- social networking or check-in apps
- voting, polling or request for information (RFI) apps
- coupon services
- branded product placement or T-Commerce
Facebook users spend more than a quarter of their time on the site consuming and interacting with the Facebook newsfeed, and this activity represents 4% of all time spent online in the U.S., according to a recent whitepaper on the social networking site from ComScore. On average, 16% of “Fans” are reached by branded content by a brand that posts five out of seven days. But branded content is much more likely to be consumed on news feeds than from dedicated fan pages, 40-150 times more likely, in fact.
- Fans of brands on Facebook (those who have explicitly “liked” a brand) are the easiest to reach with social media brand impressions, but the Friends of those Fans also constitute an important incremental audience
- Brands depend on this social element, as exposure among Friends of Fans often surpasses reach among Fans
- Brands can leverage the information on their Fans’ online behavior to better understand what messaging might work best with customers, which products to promote via social media and what type of promotions are most likely to gain traction
- The “Value of a Fan” can be assessed in increasing the depth of engagement and loyalty among Fans, generating incremental purchase behavior and leveraging the ability to influence Friends of Fans

Before taking up his current post as Executive Director of Citizen and Organizational Engagement at the USAID, he served as Managing Director of the FCC.
New York-based interactive ad agency Glow Interactive tapped former Electric Artists SVP Howie Kleinberg to head up a new division dubbed GLOW Social in the newly-created post of President of Digital. New services include social consulting, strategy and execution, online marketing and digital PR.

Yahoo is making a play to become a go-to source for third-party media playing by launching the new HTML and JavaScript-based Yahoo WebPlayer, equipped to handle a variety of audio and video formats including Yahoo Video, YouTube, MP3 or Windows Media Audio. A much more elegant solution than simply embedding a YouTube clip on your site, the new player installs with one line of code but features many next-generation features, including the ability to create mashups or mixed-media playlists. A cool search feature enables search terms such as movie titles to become “playable” in video format by enabling the “term detection” mode on the player. The first release is geared toward movie trailers and clips but additional categories are being planned for the future.
