Gannett’s USA Today is undergoing its most radical reorganization to date in a bid to adapt its businesses to emerging platforms after a 50% y/y drop off in print-based advertising, reports the AP. Changes include the creation of “content rings” in the newsroom that will focus on producing content for the web, mobile, the iPad and other formats. Former Managing Editor of the paper’s Life section, Susan Weiss, will oversee the group as Executive Editor of Content. The cuts will result in the layoff of 130 staffers this fall, about a 9% reduction.
ABC News Digital partnered with Facebook to stream a special program about the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina live on Friday, Aug. 27. The live stream, co-anchored by ABC’s David Muir in New York and Bob Woodruff from New Orleans, was simulcast on ABCNEWS.com, the network’s digital channel, ABC News NOW and the ABC News Facebook page.
GolTV HD signed a carriage agreement with Time Warner Cable that will bring the HD network into New York City for the first time. Look for it on channel 469 in Manhattan, Staten Island and Queens.
Boxee launched a new beta version of its media center software bundled with access to thousands of movies from launch partners EZTakes, Indie Movies Online, MUBI and Openfilm. In a bid to make new content show up more instantaneously, Boxee has also reorganized the Queue and Feed on the home screen to refresh every 30 seconds instead of every 10 minutes.
Cross MediaWorks has acquired Incentive Plus Network, a company that offers barter-based incentive programs in exchange for broadcast and cable air time. IPN Founding Partner Pat Pattison was named VP/Trade, Barter and Promotions.
Meredith Corp. announced that its Successful Farming brand will include a video-in-print advertisement in its August issue allowing readers to see, hear and interact with Bayer CropScience’s Votivo pesticide.
Paul Allen-owned technology licensing firm Interval Licensing filed a lawsuit in Seattle claiming that a number of blue-chip companies have infringed upon its patents for online-shopping business formats including Google, Apple and Netflix, reports Bloomberg. EBay, AOL, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples and Yahoo were also named in the suit.
The FCC filed an appeal of a July ruling by a three-judge panel of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York that threw out the regulatory agency’s enforcement policies regarding indecent programming. The ruling stemmed from a dispute between the FCC and Fox over “fleeting expletives” during award shows.
While young adults continue to be the heaviest users of social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn, usage of online social networks has nearly doubled in the past year among the 50 and older crowd, according to a new study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. One in five online adults aged 50-64 say they use social networking sites on a typical day – up from 10% a year ago, while 13% of adults 65 or over log on to social networking sites on a typical day, up from just 4% in 2009. All told half (47%) of internet users ages 50-64 and one in four (26%) users age 65 or older now use social networking sites.
Nielsen estimates the total number of TV households in the U.S. will climb to 115.9 million this coming TV season, an increase of one million homes from last year. Nielsen also estimates an increase of more than two million persons age two and older (P2+) in U.S. TV households, for a total of 294,650,000 people.
Interactive entertainment company Ludia Inc. is working on a line of video games based on the “Pyramid” series of television game shows due out during Q1 of 2011. Ludia is licensing the rights from Sony Pictures Consumer Products to produce games across major console platforms, PC/Mac, iPhone/iPod touch and iPad.

The Twitterfication of the internet continues as Google launched a new search page that lays out search results from Twitter and other searchable sites in Real-Time. (Microsoft’s Bing search engine launched a similar service, Bing Social, last year.) Pinpoint results by location, time, ect., and read threads of conversations by topic. Social networking sites are increasingly valued for their ability to place their fingers on the pulse of what’s popular in the here an now, serving as a digital watercooler of sorts. It can be an invaluable tool for marketers who want to check instant reactions of a movie opening, campaign or event.
