Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/02/10

Good morning, it’s Monday, August 2, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Google was let off the hook for collecting personal data from unsecured wireless networks using its Street View Wi-Fi cameras, in Great Britain anyway. Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) examined Google’s operations and determined that “the information we saw does not include meaningful personal details that could be linked to an identifiable person.” Google still must defend itself from a 37-state investigation led by Connecticut Atty. Gen. Richard Blumenthal.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Following last month’s acquisition of the Skiff e-reading platform and a share in the Steve Brill/Gordon Crovitz start-up Journalism Online, News Corp. is considering launching a unit to provide news to tablet devices such as the iPad, per the FT and CNBC. News Corp.’s WSJ has sold over 10k iPad subscriptions charging $17.29 a month since launching the app in April.

CBS’ Simon & Schuster Digital became the latest publisher to release an enhanced e-book version of a major release. Rick Perlstein’s Nixonland  , released as a $15.99 Kindle edition or Apple iBookstore app for the iPad or iPhone, features 27 supporting videos scattered throughout the book including CBS news clips and telecasts of important events including the ill-fated (for Nixon anyway) Nixon-Kennedy debates in 1960.

Twitter is launching a new recommendation service, this one suggesting users you may be interested in following.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

House Energy and Commerce Communications Subcommittee Chairman Rick Boucher (D-Va.) and ranking member Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) introduced a new bill on Thursday to empower the FCC to auction off spectrum on a voluntary basis to free up capacity for commercial wireless providers. Broadcasters who agree to part with their spectrum would share in the proceeds. The FCC has said the process would be voluntary but the NAB would obviously like to see it in writing.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Online video publisher My Damn Channel celebrated its 3rd birthday on Saturday by announcing an ambitious slate of 10 new damn channels, 3 of which premiere this summer. The site, known for producing such classics as “Easy To Assemble” and “You Suck at Photoshop,” has managed to attract some of the biggest names in online video (Harry Shearer, Illeana Douglas) by offering creative freedom and an honest share of the revenue take. Studios in particular have found it an attractive environment in which to advertise. For instance, Paramount (which bought pre-rolls across the entire site) is launching a channel to promote the new Steve Carell/Paul Rudd comedy, “Dinner for Schmucks.” Former Colbert Report writer Mark Malkoff is bottling some of his corporate-tied stunts (such as visiting all 171 Manhattan Starbucks in a single day) for his own channel later this month. Then there’s “Children’s Hospital: Dr. Owen Maestro”, a spinoff of TheWB.com’s series, now airing on Sunday Nights on Adult Swim. Go Sukashi, filmed in “Actionscope” is a take off on the “tokusatu” genre of low budget TV programming in Japan (made popular by Ultraman in the 60’s) has already premiered. We’ll have to wait until the fall for season 3 of Easy to Assemble, in which Illeana (who’s doing a guest bit on Entourage next season) and crew go to IKEA’s home base of Sweden to try and track down the roots of the band Sparhusen.
