Good Morning.  It’s Monday, August 27, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Hearst intends to bid nearly $600 million to buy the remaining stock of Hearst-Argyle Television it doesn’t already own at the price of $23.50/share, a 15% premium over the current market price. Hearst currently owns approximately 52% of the outstanding Series A Common Stock and 100% of the Series B Common Stock, representing about 73% of both the outstanding equity and general voting power of the TV group.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

BBC America will debut new episodes of its UK drama Hollyoaks daily via BBCAmerica.com starting with a two-episode launch on September 4. Each new episode will be available online seven days for free. The first 65 episodes of Hollyoaks will also air as repeats on the linear network’s late-night schedule.
 
Tennis anyone? USA Network begins its 12-day coverage of the 2007 US Open Tennis Championship today at 11a from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. This is the network’s 24th year of covering the US grand slam tennis event and it will telecast more than 107 total hours including approximately 95 hours of live coverage simulcast in hi def on Universal HD. The broadcast announcing team includes Ted Robinson and John McEnroe, together for the 16th year on USA Network. Other announcers include Tracy Austin, in her 17th year with the US Open, Jim Courier, along with Bill Macatee as host, Al Trautwig as studio host and Michael Barkann and Jon Wertheim as reporters.
 
I know you’re probably thinking, what happens with Power of 10 if it gets picked up for more episodes, and Drew Carey is already committed to doing Price is Right?  Don’t worry – they already got this worked out – he’ll do both.  Both shows tape pretty much the same way – that is a bunch of shows at the same taping, giving CBS the ability to stockpile both the primetime and the daytime gamers. Price is Right is scheduled to premiere on October 15th, and with the success thus far of Power of 10, expect to see it show up again next season in primetime.

Clarification: The Nielsen Company reported changes to several local markets which will change their DMA ranking. New Orleans moved up to slot #53 from #54. Also, the 2007-2008 local market estimates, which are projected to January 1, 2008, will be used in meter market samples starting September 22 and in diary samples with the release of the October/November surveys.

Fox has added Donal Logue to the lineup of Hackett, a comedy pilot currently in development about a disenfranchised Yale professor who returns to him hometown as a teacher at the local high school.  The project is from Barry Sonnenfeld, and also include cast members Rachel Boston as the school principal, and Morgan Murphy as another teacher.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Some major changes are afoot at GSD&M, according to The Wall Street Journal. Among those changes, a new name — GSD&M Idea City — and a bunch of new titles for current executives.  Founder Roy Spence who has been President, will become Chairman/CEO.  Judy Trabulsi, EVP/Exec Media Director, will become Chairwoman of the agency’s leadership council.  Steve Gurasich will become Vice Chairman, overseeing the innovation area, a title change from his current CEO rank.  Tim McClure, executive producer of Mythos Studios, will be President of Mythos Group, the film production unit for the agency. Overseeing the day to day operations is Duff Stewart, currently COO and soon to be President.  GSD&M: Idea City is now also on the lookout for it’s new Chief Idea Officer.

Tracy Katsky named SVP/Development and Original Programming at Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite, overseeing both the live action and animated development slate, as well as current series production, reports Variety.  Based on the west coast, Tracy reports to Marjorie Cohn, EVP/Development and Original Programming.

Thursday – A18-49 Analysis:  CBS topped the chart Thursday night winning with a 2.9/9 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS was #1 each hour: at 8p Big Brother 8 finished with a 3.1/10; the CSI encore posted a 2.9/8 in the 9p hour; and the Without a Trace rerun slid down to a 2.8/8 yet still won the 10p time period.
