Facebook defended itself against privacy concerns around its new Places location service on Friday, creating a video to explain to users how to utilize the service’s “powerful and simple” controls. Privacy Advocates the company consulted with on the Places launch also noted that its “Here and Now” feature, which broadcasts your physical location to other Facebook users in the area, is limited for users under 18. Yet privacy advocates continue to complain that Places enables Facebook members to tag their friends’ locations by default, arguing that having to go in and change your settings will inevitably lead to conflicts and violations for the millions of users who don’t get around to doing so. As Facebook begins to add sponsorship elements and more Foursquare-like features, these complaints are likely to intensify.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Following a reported compensation dispute with paparazzi, the People Magazine app has officially launched for the iPad allowing each weekly digital issue to be purchased through iTunes for $4/each. Along with all the content from the printed edition, each issue will include extra content including photos, celebrity videos, TV previews and song samples, as well as access to breaking news updates throughout the week. A last minute arrangement between Time, Inc. and Apple will allow current People subscribers to access the digital editions for no extra charge by entering a verification code, per the NYTimes.
 
Leading up to the 100th episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations on Sept. 6, Travel Channel has launched a new website and iPhone app with food-themed social networking service Foodspotting to enable users to share their culinary experiences via photos and recommendations. The app and website enables users to follow the recommendations of highly rated users and earn points (“tips”) when others recommend food they spotted first.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Online party and activity “check-in” service Hot Potato has been acquired by Facebook for an undisclosed amount, conceivably to help spiff up its new Places feature. The start-up says it will not accept new registrations and that all data users have compiled to date would be deleted (and not passed on to Facebook) within a month.
 
Micro-transaction and global payment platform provider PlaySpan landed $18 million in series C funding led by Vodafone Ventures and Softbank Bodhi Fund, with participation from existing investors Menlo Ventures, Novel TMT Ventures, STIC and others. PlaySpan is being used to power virtual goods sales and micro-transactions for more than 1,000 online and social games.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
ITN Digital, comprised of 3,300+ local television, newspaper, radio and community-based websites ranked as the top “ad-focus local” ad network in terms of reach of unique viewers, according to ComScore, with a potential reach of 105 million uniques (nearly 50% of the internet population in the U.S.) Centro ranked second with a potential reach of 103.1 million, followed by IB Local Network (101 million) and Cox Cross Media (93.2 million).
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
A new marketing ploy by social gaming company Zynga has angered San Francisco city officials, reports The San Francisco Chronicle. To promote a new Sin City expansion for its Facebook game Mafia Wars, Zynga authorized local ad agency Davis Ellen Advertising to print up fake $25,000 bills to glue on sidewalks across the city as part of a $25k giveaway. The Dept. of Public Works has had to send out steam cleaners to get them off the sidewalks.
 
Modern Family show runner Steven Levitan raised the issue of compensation for creators on last week’s news that Hulu was preparing for an IPO, per the NYPost. He also criticized Nielsen’s TV ratings system for failing to adequately track views on multiple platforms.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Worldwide shipments of pay-TV hybrid set-top boxes (providing access to both broadband and cable/satellite delivered content) are expected to grow to nearly 87 million units by 2015, as operators adapt to increasing competition within markets, according to a new IMS Research study. Much of the growth will be driven by pay TV operators in Asia and Europe, after an early surge in demand from the Americas. Growth in Asia is expected to be heavily driven by hybrid deployments in China late in the period, in addition to strong growth in France, Germany, Turkey, UK and the Netherlands.

Genius has launched a new HD webcam that adds many of the features that are becoming popular with videoconferencing users including video capture with a one-click YouTube publishing button and an Avatar setting allowing users to mask their image and voice. It’s PC and Mac compatible and retails for $60.00.

Widgets give you quick access to emails or attachments they’ve sent in the past or meetings you may have scheduled with them in the future. Gist is also available as an iPhone or Android app. A recent update to Gist’s iPhone app allows you to easily share your contact info with a new person or pick from a menu of actions when involved in a meeting email tree.
