As the deals keep getting bigger, so do expectations with networks ramping up their college football coverage this year. A bevy of new shows and familiar faces both veteran callers and college football legends – have been signed, sealed and delivered as we head into the season. Here’s a look at what’s new, key dates and what’s on deck for the national sports outlets.
NBC Sports Group
NBC sports and VERSUS are shoring up their college football telecasts this year by introducing a new college football studio show, College Football Live. The series will provide pre- and post-game coverage as well as halftime reports for every game on both NBC and VERSUS this season. The show will be broadcast from the network’s studio at 30 Rock in New York City and will be hosted by Liam McHugh along with Doug Flutie and Roland Williams as the in-studio analysts. In addition, when NBC broadcasts a Notre Dame game, Peter King of Sports Illustrated and Football Night in America and Mike Florio of profootballtalk.com will join the studio crew at halftime to offer exclusive NFL info and updates. VERSUS will also introduce a new one-hour college football show on Monday nights at 5p.
The company will air a combined 28 college football games on NBC and VERSUS this season with Notre Dame as well as teams from the Pac-12, Mountain West and Ivy League conferences. NBC’s coverage begins on Sat., Sept. 3 at 3:30p when Notre Dame faces South Florida. VERSUS’ season kicks-off on Sat., Sept. 10, with a double-header featuring TCU hosting Air Force at 3:30 p.m. ET, followed by Utah at USC at 7:30p.
“Similar to our efforts with the NHL, golf and horse racing, the upcoming college football season allows us to better serve the viewer by expanding our coverage across all of our platforms,” said Sam Flood, Executive Producer for both NBC and VERSUS. “Whether it’s a Notre Dame, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Ivy League game and regardless of whether it airs on NBC or VERSUS, college football fans can expect coverage consistent with the NBC Sports brand.”
Key dates: NBC The first primetime Notre Dame game in two decades will air on Oct. 22 at 7:30p when the Irish face USC.
VERSUS Nov. 12 features a battle between 2010 Mountain West champion TCU at heavyweight MWC newcomer Boise State at 3:30p.
ESPN
Officially entering the first year of its agreements with the ACC and BYU, ESPN’s 2011 College Football Game Schedule will include more than 400 regular and postseason games across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3.com, ESPN 3D, ESPN Regional Television, and more. For the fifth consecutive year, ESPN is set to be the only network that will cross the entire conference spectrum with home games from all six of the BCS automatic qualifying conferences as well as the MAC, Sun Belt and WAC. The company will also televise road games featuring Notre Dame, Navy, Army and teams from the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA. At the end of the season, ESPN will present all five of the BCS games, including the Allstate BCS National Championship, as part of its schedule of 33 bowl games.
New assignments in the family this year include: Ed Cunningham partnering with Mark Jones for ESPN2’s weekly telecast, Brian Griese shifting from ESPN2’s Saturday noon game to ESPNU’s evening game with Clay Matvick, Beth Mowins taking the role of play-by-play on ESPN2’s Saturday noon telecast with analyst Mike Bellotti, Bob Davie moving from ESPN2 Saturday night games to ABC Saturday afternoon telecasts with Bob Wischusen, who worked Saturday noon games on ESPN2 last year and Matt Stinchcomb joining Rob Stone on Saturday afternoon ESPNU telecasts.
ESPNU is adding three new college football studio shows to its fall line-up, beginning Monday, Aug. 29, at 1p with Palmer & Pollack, CFB Final Verdict and Film Room also kicking off that same week.
Key date: With literally every conference at its disposal in one form or another, opening the season on a high note on Sept. 3 will be important for the channels. ABC features #3 Oregon/#4 LSU at 8p while ESPN spotlights Boise St./Georgia that same hour.
CBS Sports
CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network will look to push and expand last year’s ratings gains this season. The SEC on CBS schedule will showcase the SEC behemoth with 15 conference games during the network’s 12-week season, including the SEC Championship on Dec. 3. In addition, the network will highlight its Armed Forces connections with the Army/Navy game on Dec. 10 as well as the Air Force/Navy game on Oct. 1. The season will conclude with the 77th Sun Bowl on Dec. 31. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson, along with Tracy Wolfson reporting from the sidelines, will continue their run as CBS Sports’ lead college football announce team beginning Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3p with Tennessee visiting Florida.
Executives say that CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network will have a more consistent feel to the brand this season with production and on-air talent crossing both platforms. CBS Sports Network hits its ninth season of college football with games featuring the Mountain West,Conference USA, Army and Navy football, NCAA Division II as well as the Patriot League. The network will air 42 games this season including 10 games featuring Army, Navy and Air Force.
This year the network is adding seven new voices to the fold, include former University of Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez as well as play-by-play announcers Gary Thorne and James Bates.
“While we are doing a similar programming plan for our live games, the amount of programming and live programming that will be supporting our events will be significantly enhanced over any other prior year,” said David Berson, Executive VP, CBS Sports and President of CBS College Sports Network. “This year we’ll be a lot more aggressive with studio-based programming. Adding The Tim Brando Show, expanding Inside College Football, and increasing SEC programming with pregame, post-game highlights. We’ll also soon be announcing a new show that plays off social media.”
Key Dates: CBS readies for a triple header on Oct. 1 as part of Armed Forced Week, beginning at noon with Air Force at Navy and followed by two SEC games of the week.
CBS Sports Network: Rutgers/Army at Yankee Stadium is set to Nov. 12 at 3:30p, followed by a game between two potential top 25 teams in UCF at Southern Miss at 8p.
Fox Sports Media Group
With a slew of recent deals under its belt, more than 200 match-ups are on deck across FX, FOX Sports Networks and FOX College Sports and wraps up with coverage of the inaugural Pac-12 Championship, Big Ten Championship and AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic airing in prime-time on FOX.
FX opens the door to its inaugural season of the sport with the FOX College Football Game of the Week featuring the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners hosting the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Sept. 3 at 8p. Veteran announcer Gus Johnson will call play-by-play, Charles Davis will serve as analyst and former University of Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster will play sideline analyst for the FX games.
“Led by Gus, Charles and Tim, our roster of college football talent is very experienced, knowledgeable and deep on all levels of production,” said Doug Sellars, Executive Vice President, Production and Executive Producer, FSMG. “This is the widest array of college football ever broadcast on our family of networks and we look forward to giving fans informative and entertaining coverage of their favorite college teams all season long.”
Key date: FX plays host to first duo of ranked teams when Missouri visits top-ranked Oklahoma on Sept. 24 at 8p.
BTN
With Nebraska now in its fold, BTN’s football schedule will feature more than 40 games, as well as pre-game, halftime and post-game coverage on Saturdays and new studio shows every weeknight beginning at 7p. The games begin on BTN on Friday, Sept. 2, with Michigan State hosting Youngstown State at 7:30p.
New faces this year include Jon Jansen and Tony Banks as studio and game analysts, Ahman Green serving as sideline analyst for selected telecasts and Joe Tiller as a game analyst.
“We have great chemistry among our returning talent, and we’re also thrilled to add some people who are new to the network, but are already household names to Big Ten fans,” said BTN President Mark Silverman.
Key date: On Sept. 10, the network hosts its first-ever college football tripleheader beginning at noon with simultaneous games featuring Toledo/Ohio St. and South Dakota St/Illinois, followed by Eastern Illinois at Northwestern at 3:30p and Virginia/Indiana at 7p.
With two marquee teams in play, FOX took the preliminary primetime ratings with its coverage of the NFL preseason football between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday. The broadcast soared 45% versus its comparable game last year in the metered-market households, averaging a 6.1, up from last summer’s 4.2 score. That was good enough to win the night in primetime. In the 18-49 demo, Fox averaged a 3.2 rating.
More UFC news following its deal with Fox Sports Media Group. UFC executives told the Las Vegas Sun that the first FOX television card, set for Nov. 12, will feature two fights as part of the hour-long broadcast and not run into the scheduled Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez boxing PPV also set for that night. Future FOX events will run longer. One match on the UFC card will feature rising featherweights Dustin Poirier and Pablo Garza. Meanwhile, UFC President Dana White is claiming that his promotional interview with ESPN was cancelled as a result of the Fox deal. He posted on Twitter that, “ESPN always hated us and now they hate us more now that we are on FOX. They canceled my int next week for UFC Rio Fuk ESPN.” Ouch.
Mediacom Communications and NFL Network have reached a new, long-term agreement for carriage of NFL Network on the cable operator. As part of the package, Mediacom, the eighth largest cable operator in the country, will also offer the NFL RedZone channel for customers and will begin carrying the outlet in time for the 2011 NFL season.
Soccer continues to score for Galavision. The channel announced that its live coverage of the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup semifinal between Mexico and Brazil averaged more than 1.7 million total viewers, to score are the second most-watched Spanish-language cable telecast in history. The game drew more than 3 million viewers who watched all or part of the telecast. Additionally, the game ranks as the fourth highest watched sports telecast in August so far among all cable networks, regardless of language, with Adults 18-34.
South Africa’s Premier Soccer League on Friday inked a five-year television rights deal worth more than $277.5 million with the country’s satellite channel SuperSport. The deal begins next season.
With the Summer Games on the way, viewers took to gymnastics over the weekend. Saturday night’s preliminary ratings showed NBC winning its time period among adults 18-49 with the Visa Championships. The competition scored a 1.2/5 in the demo and drew 3.94 million viewers. That said, numbers are still being adjusted due to preseason football preemptions.
Thursday’s Rangers/Angels game delivered FOX Sports Southwest with its highest-rated telecast of the season. The game in a 6.4 household average in Dallas-Fort Worth, and drew the best rating for a Rangers game on the channel since Aug. 21, 2010 when the Rangers faced the Royals.
The Big Ten Conference wants us to stop asking if the conference is going to expand, releasing a statement that the Council of Presidents/Chancellors for the 12-team organization met recently and decided that there was no plan to engage in expansion either now “or at any time in the foreseeable future, barring a significant shift in the current intercollegiate athletic landscape.”
The NFL holds its annual supplemental draft today, set for 1p. Seven players are eligible for the process this year, with Ohio St. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor potentially the only player that will get picked
TSN is entering a multi-year partnership extension with Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), and partner MRX Associates, to make TSN the exclusive home of the Vanier Cup for the next three years and also deliver rights for the Uteck Bowl, Mitchell Bowl and Hardy Cup, which will air live for the first time ever. The agreement will include all multimedia broadcast rights for the championship games along with French-language broadcast rights for RDS.
Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback, and former Dolphin, Bob Griese is returning to the broadcast booth, inking a deal to join the Miami Dolphins radio broadcast team this season. Griese enters in place of Jim Mandich, who passed away in April, and will join Keith Sims and Kim Bokamper behind the microphone.
Charles Barkley is officially a doubter. The TNT basketball analyst told XX Sports Radio that he doesn’t think the NBA will play this season due to the disparity between the two sides of the NBA lockout. “I don’t think they’re gonna play at all this year,” Barkley told the XX Sports Radio. “I feel bad to be honest with you, I feel bad for the people who work for the teams and the people who work for the arenas. The players and the owners are going to be fine because it’s gonna get settled at some point. The NBA has already laid off 100 people, so it’s gonna get ugly, real ugly.”
Multiple reports are stating that MetLife has signed on the dotted line in an agreement to grab the naming rights to the new home of the New York Jets and Giants. The venue would be called MetLife Stadium and the deal could be worth as much as $400 million over a 20 year span.
Comcast has dropped its legal complaint against DIRECTV for its marketing of the company’s NFL Sunday Ticket Package. Comcast had charged that the ads were misleading but now state that due to recent changes to the campaign, they were now satisfied enough to withdraw the complaint.

You can watch the full trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQu3T5Xy8TI or a shorter version at OlympicvideoGames.com. The game will hit shelves in Nov.
