FirstRun.tv (www.FirstRun.tv ), a new online TV network targeting online and mobile viewers, added a Science Fiction channel to its roster of channels including the categories Comedy, Sports, Action, Drama, Thrills, Reality, Kids, Performances and Animation.  The Science Fiction channel, called WiFi SciFi launches this month housing sci fi web series from independent producers such as the upcoming 12-episode futuristic adventure series Alpha Planet starring Don Jeanes. 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Content Television last week premiered Strictly S#xual: The Series on Hulu and Hulu Plus. The spin off of the cult film favorite Strictly S#xual, will be aired weekly with six, 30 minute episodes. The series continues with the same characters and their complex relationships.  Content Television picked up the worldwide broadcast and digital platforms distribution rights for the series.

In the near future, BlackBerry users may be able to access a music streaming service that will work across its mobile devices, says Reuters.  BlackBerry’s parent company Research In Motion (RIM) is apparently nearing completion on the new music streaming service and is also reportedly close to finalizing negotiations with such major labels as Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group, Sony Corp’s Sony Music, Warner Music Group and EMI Group.  BlackBerry’s new service is expected to launch on September 5 in the US. 

Allrecipes.com is teaming up with PBS KIDS to push for healthier eating. The two brands will utilize PBS KIDS GO! character Professor Fizzy, from Fizzy’s Lunch Lab, on Allrecipe’s Back to School pages with healthy recipes and links to the show’s games and videos. Other content in the Back-to-School suite include “Easy Meals” and “Baked Treats” and healthy eating tips from PBS Parents.

Already boasting more than 10 million members in less than a month, Google+ is now confirming who is actually on the social network. The company launched its verification badge program on Saturday to confirm the identities of celebrities and public figures using the network, adding a check mark and a banner next to the names of authenticated personalities.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Dunkin Brands is looking to expand its stronghold beyond the Northeast through the Sims Universe. In one of several moves this year, the company has integrated coffee and pastries into the Sims Social Facebook game, to be introduced on facebook.com . Dunkin Brands products were also seen in this year’s blockbuster movie, “Captain America: The First Avenger.”  Both moves are a concerted effort to reach out to young adults who may have Stars in their eyes.

Ludia Inc., an interactive entertainment company is teaming with Mark Burnett’s One Three Television LLC to offer the game show Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? as a Facebook platform.  The multiplayer game is based on the syndicated TV show format incorporating many of the show’s popular elements such as questions taken from ten different academic subjects, the same theme music and the “classroom” style setting.  Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? on Facebook is available at:  http://apps.facebook.com/playfifthgrader/.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Jumo ( http://www.jumo.com ), the 18-month old social network created by Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes to help people find organizations to get involved with to make a meaningful impact on the world, has been acquired by Good ( http://www.good.is ), a publisher of both a website and magazine that also supports good causes and positive change.  When completely merged the companies will exist as a single online network on Good.is.  The terms of the deal were not released.  Hughes says he’ll team with Good’s CEO, Ben Goldhirsh, to help grow Good and Jumo with the goal of maintaining their non-profit status and “will be open-sourcing our own codebase to enable other social entrepreneurs to use our progress thus far for their own endeavors.”

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

According to the Nielsen Cross Platform Report, Americans are spending 22 minutes more each month watching TV.  Americans watched 41% more video on their mobile devices since last year and over 100% more since 2009.  The use of DVRs and internet video also saw gains. While broadcast only homes remained stagnant, satellite and cable delivered TV saw modest gains, however, subscriptions to wired cable decreased slightly.  More homes have HDTV (66%) than video consoles, (45%) or DVRs (40%).  Nielsen also found that 91% of all TV households still paid for TV subscriptions.

Sales of e-books are having a major growth spurt in Western Europe, according to a new European market e-book and e-reader report from Futuresource Consulting.  The Western European e-book market has grown by more than 400% in 2010 to top ten million paid-for books and for this year, the market should hit unit sales of 32 million.  The UK is the leader of e-book sales in the European market and dominated nearly half of all Western European e-book sales in 2010. The launch of Amazon’s e-reading device and Kindle Store in the UK last August 2010, has spurred the UK’s growth.  Within five months of launch, Amazon had sold nearly 400,000 Kindle devices and e-book sales in the neighborhood of £20 million. The UK could reach sales of £100 million in 2011 with more than 5% of total UK consumer spending on books.

Ticket sales for concerts, sports and other events were among the fastest growing on the web in the US this July 2011, per data from July 2011 ComScore Media Metrix service.  Ticketing websites were saw upwards of 26 million users browsing for summer events, up by +23% versus June 2011.  Ticketmaster was first with 10.9 million visitors (up +13%), followed by MovieTickets.com with 5.6 million (+ 34%). Tickets.com Sites moved into third position with 3.6 million, while StubHub.com was just behind with 3.4 million (+9%) and eBay Tickets US rounded out the top five with 843,000 visitors (+31%).

Scripps Networks Interactive’s Travel Channel tagged Andy Singer as SVP/Programming and Production Development.  Andy previously served as GM of DIY Network, also owned by Scripps.  In his new position beginning September 1, Andy will manage all facets of the network’s programming strategy, development and production.  Furthermore, Ross Babbit will succeed Andy as SVP/GM at DIY Network.  Ross has been with DIY Network since 2004, most recently as head of programming partnerships, special projects and increasing growth of branded entertainment.
