Cynopsis: Kids!

8/20/07

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 20, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

High School Musical 2 premiered on Disney Channel last Friday, August 17, 8-10:05p (well, DUH!), to a record breaking audience of 17.2 million viewers, according to the Nielsen preliminary fast national ratings, becoming the most watched basic cable telecast ever among total viewers. HSM2 knocked the prior basic cable record holder out of the ballpark – ESPN’s Monday Night Football on September 23, 2006, which had an average 16 million total viewers.  For Disney Channel’s key demos, HSM2 was the most viewed TV telecast on record to date with 6.1 million among K6-11.  Meanwhile, the TV movie ranked as the second most watched telecast to date with 5.9 million among Tweens 9-14, behind only to Super Bowl 2004.

Leading out of the HSM2 premiere, Disney Channel offered a sneak preview of Phineas & Ferb (10:05-10:20p), its new original series, which held onto a significant audience with 10.8 million total viewers and 4.2 million K6-11, the network’s second highest audiences for both demos.  Finally, the evening capped off with a new episode of Hannah Montana (10:20-10:45p), which also set records, this time for the most watched basic cable series with 10.7 total viewers, 4.2 million among K6-11 and 4.1 in Tweens 9-14.

Cartoon Network joins the growing line-up of kids networks that have announced new guidelines concerning its licensed characters and the marketing of food/beverage to kids 12 and under. The guidelines will also incorporate healthy lifestyle messaging (nutrition and physical activity) into new programming.  To further that goal, Cartoon Network has developed nutritional criteria for its character product licensing and custom brand-integrated promotions with advertisers for on-air, online, and on pack.  The nutritional criteria includes a cap on total calories per serving with limits on total fat, saturated fat, added trans fat, among others, while encouraging recommended nutrients such as vitamin A and C, and iron and so on.  These new guidelines will begin January 1, 2008, effecting new product licensing and promotional tie-in deals, as well as renewals.  As Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network has carved out “licensing of special occasion sweets” from the guidelines.  Cartoon Network developed its new guidelines using the nutritional standards created by the Institute of Medicine and the US Dietary Guidelines, along with consultations with nutritional experts.  Prior to this announcement, much of Cartoon Network’s healthy lifestyle messaging was served through its multi-platform “Get Animated” initiative, which will also continue.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Zac Efron, as in High School Musical and Hairspray, will star in New Line’s upcoming movie, Seventeen, according to Entertainment Weekly. In a Freaky-Friday meets Big, but in reverse kind of plot, the movie revolves around a 30-something guy who wants a life change and wakes up as a high school senior (guess who).  Adam Shankman, who directed Efron in Hairspray, will produce the movie along with his sister Jennifer Gibgot.

CBeebies has ordered Carrie & David’s Popshop (30×20), a new interactive music series for kids, reports Broadcast Now.   Carrie and David Grant, who serve as the singing coaches for the BBC’s series Fame Academy, will host the series.  Produced by BBC Scotland, each episode Carrie and David compose and perform a new song.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Weather Channel furthers its effort to educate viewers about climate change and its impact on our lives this October 1, when the network launches The Climate Quiz.  Hosted by Bill Nye, The Science Guy, the Climate Quiz are 60-second vignettes that will initially air during Abrams & Bettes – Beyond the Forecast, 8-9p. The Climate Quiz will feature Nye on the street talking about global warming and asking questions of people in LA’s Venice Beach and NYC’s Central Park.  That said, how much water is actually wasted by a dripping faucet?

Transformers is headed back to the big screen, but this time around it is the really big screen as in Imax, according to the website Superherohype.com.  Paramount plans to re-release Transformers, one of the big summer movies, in Imax theaters this September 21, with additional footage.  A quick check to Transformer director Michael Bay’s website provides confirmation of the Imax release of the movie, but no other information.

Literacy is the star of the new season for the PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go! programming blocks, premiering September 3, 2007.  Though early reading and social skills have long been a staple of kids programming curricula on public TV in the US, this new season of both blocks aims to serve PBS’ Ready To Learn initiative through content to help young kids, across all economic strata, establish strong pre-reading and reading skills, as well as offering shows to kids and parents via multi-platforms and generally more interactivity.  The second season of PBS Kids, produced with Out of the Blue Enterprises, features a new environment, format and segments that reflects a preschool classroom experience, with time for music, math, art and reading, as well as two new series, Super Why, also from Out of the Blue, and Wordworld from creator Don Moody and presented by WTTW Chicago.  The block includes new episodes of returning series including Sesame Street, Curious George and Dragon Tales and Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies.  PBS Kids Go! introduces a full-length version of WordGirl, from Scholastic media and Soup2Nuts, which is based on the shot form series of the same name that ran on-air and online (pbskidsgo.com) in fall 2006.  New seasons of current series include Between The Lions, Cyberchase, Maya & Miguel and Dragonfly TV, while new season of Arthur debuted earlier this summer.

MTV Networks will invest $500 million on the development and distribution of its gaming business across all platforms over the course of the next two years. On the heals of that news, Shockwave, a MTVN Kids and Family Group casual gaming site, has inked a deal with Nokia to deliver Shockwave’s Flash Lite mini games to Nokia mobile device users across Europe and Asia.  Under the deal Shockwave will begin by making 20+ of its mini games available, including Downhill Train and new titles such as Happy Hours, in 24 markets.  Mini games based on MTVN properties are slated to debut in the future.  Earlier this summer Nickelodeon said it would invest $100 million over two years, or one fifth of MTVN’s new pledge.

Miley Cyrus, AKA Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana, will serve as a guest DJ on Radio Disney today, August 20, 6-8p, from its studios in Dallas, TX.  Cyrus will take listener calls, run contests and play music.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Koch Records has re-upped its deal with The Wiggles for four-years across the US and Canada.  The new four-year pact will include new Wiggles release as well as previous recordings.  The new CD, Getting Strong, featuring 33 new songs is scheduled for release October 9, 2007 and includes the newest member of the group Sam Moran; the first change in the group in its 16-years.  Moran fills the role of the yellow-shirt wearing Wiggle Greg Page, who left the group in fall 2006.  A companion DVD is also set for an October 2007 release.
