~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Reality docu-series Hard Knocks from HBO Sports and NFL Films has been cancelled this year due to the NFL’s uncertain summer schedule resulting from the recent labor dispute.  The five-part series, following one NFL team during preseason training, will return next year.  Instead, HBO will air a 90-minute special episode of Hard Knocks with footage from previous seasons on August 31 at 10p.

During a live blog yesterday afternoon via THR surrounding the PBS Masterpiece miniseries Downton Abbey, executive producers Rebecca Eaton and Gareth Neame said the anticipated second season of Downton Abbey will officially premiere in the US on January 8, 2012.  The UK premiere is set for this September.  Also participating in the live chat were cast members Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Dan Stevens and Siobhan Finneran.

Discovery Channel offers its fall lineup including premiere dates for new and returning series:

  • Dinosaur Revolution is a four-part series relating the private lives and odd behaviors of dinosaurs.  The series will premiere September 4 and September 11 at 9-11p each night.
  • Carfellas is a reality series about a used car business in Amityville run by Mikey D. and his co-workers Tommie and Mario.  Premieres in October.
  • Gunsmoke (wt) – Reality series set in one of the oldest gun shops west of the Mississippi in Colorado run by a third generation family of gunsmiths.  Premieres in October.
  • Penn & Teller Tell A Lie features the celebrity duo Penn & Teller in a new series as they present up to seven outrageous and funny stories per episode told through visual stunts.  The home audience will have to determine if the story is true or untrue through an interactive companion experience available at Discovery.com, the Discovery Channel App for iPad and via iPhone.  Premieres in October.
  • Weed Wars follows a business in Oakland, Harborside Health Center, the nation’s largest medicinal cannabis dispensary serving more than 80,000 patients.  Weed Wars is produced by Braverman Productions. Premieres in November.
  • Discovery Channel’s returning series premiere dates include: September 2: Man, Woman, Wild at 9p; Swamp Loggers at 10p; September 5: American Chopper at 9p; Swamp Brothers at 10p; September 28: Storm Chasers at 10p; in October: Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe and Mythbusters; October 28: Gold Rush: Alaska at 10p; and November 4: Flying Wild Alaska at 9p.

An upcoming new six-episode series on Animal Planet explores how animals have the power to transform human lives.  SAVED opens this fall and showcases stories about people, who in their darkest hour are given a second chance at life by animals.  A special sneak preview of SAVED, featuring 9/11 stories is scheduled to air September 7 at 9p.  SAVED is produced by Picture Shack for Animal Planet.

At the summer Television Critics Association Press Tour, MTV revealed its upcoming slate of new shows and a couple of series renewals:

  • Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head are back on the network as of this fall with a new 12-episode season.  The animated series’ characters will comment on everything pop culture from current music videos to reality TV shows and more.  Series debuts October 27 at 10p.
  • Good Vibes is a 12-episode half-hour coming-of-age animated comedy about Mondo and Woodie as they juggle hormones, high school life and family life against the backdrop of beaches on the West Coast.  Six Point Harness is the animation company.
  • I Just Want My Pants Back is a scripted comedy series about a young guy post-college living in Brooklyn who has a one night stand and the girl steals his beloved jeans.  He begins a quest to get his jeans back and to meet the girl again in the process.  The series is a co-production with Universal Cable Productions.  A sneak peak of the pilot episode will air immediately following the 2011 Video Music Awards on August 28 at 11p.  The series will debut on MTV in early 2012.
  • Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew was renewed for a seventh season and Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory will be returning for a fifth season.

Rosie O’Donnell’s new daily talk show, The Rosie Show on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network is kicking off October 10 at 7p followed by the premiere of OWN Your Life (the oprah class) at 8p.  Both shows will air Monday through Friday on OWN.  OWN Your Life (the oprah class), previously titled Oprah’s Encore, will sport a companion online class along with the series including course work on Oprah.com.  As of now, interested viewers can sign up to reserve a spot in the class via Oprah.com.  The show’s goal is to have 1 million viewers signed to take the class which begins with the show’s premiere.  The Rosie Show is produced by Harpo Studios in association with KidRo Productions, Inc. and SantaBu Productions.  Harpo Productions is behind OWN Your Life (the oprah class).
