Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/05/10

Good morning, it’s Monday, April 5, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The release of the WiFi-only iPad created an expected furor at Apple stores and Best Buy outlets on Saturday, with demand exceeding some expectations. Often quoted Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated first-day opening sales at between 600,000 to 700,000 units – more than double his initial estimates. (There still seems to be iPads available if you resisted the urge, however – a call to a few local stores on Sunday afternoon revealed plenty of stock left.) The iPad section of the accompanying App Store opened its (digital) doors with more than 2,300 apps.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The AP announced it will cover Tiger Wood’s first post-scandal Q&A press conference from the Augusta this afternoon, beginning at 2 pm ET via the embeddable AP Live platform powered by Lifestream. AP Live recorded more than 2 million streams during its Oscars Red Carpet coverage. The official Masters Site will also stream the event.

Warner Bros.’ latest big 3D release, “The Clash of the Titans,” battled it out netting an estimated $61.4 million at the box office, despite competition from the Final Four and the iPad on Saturday. Some 52% of the total came from 3D ticket sales.

San Francisco-based web video hosting start-up Episodic has been acquired by Google for an undisclosed amount. The company’s technology will be used to help improve YouTube efforts to deliver video to the internet, mobile phones and IPTV devices. Episodic, which previously raised $2.5 million in financing, will continue to serve its current customers, but sign-ups for new accounts have been placed on hold.

The Blu-ray Disc Association unveiled a new BDXL format targeted at broadcasting, medical and document imaging archiving, capable of holding up to 128GB (write-once) or 100GB (rewriteable) of data. (Current 50GB Blu-ray discs have about half of the capacity.) The larger format, which utilizes 3 to 4 recordable layers, will require a new player.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

The list of major media iPad apps released over the weekend is long and varied. Paid apps tend to cost more than their iPhone/iPad touch counterparts, although most have been completely redesigned to take advantage of the iPad’s 9.7″ screen. Here’s a rundown of many of the major ones:

  • A free CBS app provides streaming video clips from CBS shows as well as podcasts from CNET TV and CBS Radio and more than 7,000 eBooks from Simon Schuster. A separate CBS Interactive Radio.com app provides HD multicast or digital access to 400+ stations including contextualized Last.fm selections and 150 stations from Yahoo! Music
  • NPR‘s free iPad app, developed with Bottle Rocket Apps, presents News, Arts & Life, and Music content in a colorful visual interface; the audio player is prominently placed for easy access to NPR podcasts
  • From MTV Networks comes the $5 “Beavis and Butt-Head” app, featuring clips and mini-games; the $5 “Dora the Explorer Coloring Adventures” app; a “Daily Jigsaw” puzzle app powered by Shockwave; and VH1 Classic’s $3 “Intellivision for iPad” featuring early console gaming classics
  • Amazon released a free version of its Kindle e-Reader for the iPad, providing access to the Kindle Store’s inventory of 450,000 books
  • The NBA “Game Time: Courtside” app provides real-time access to scores, stats and video highlights. A full court display provides a view of the entire court revealing real-time shooting percentages and performance by zones, as well as team leaders, box scores, quarterly play by play action, and a live shot chart
  • Discovery‘s $4.99 “Mythbusters” app features casual games, Facebook and Twitter integration and interactive short form video from the series, including sneak peeks, outtakes and behind-the-scenes clips
  • Msnbc.com‘s app features immersive video clips from the network’s shows, delivered in the new HTML 5 format
  • Gannett’s USA Today app, powered by PointRoll, provides a snazzy, easy-to-use interface enabling users to scroll around for new stores and columns. It’s free for now but Gannett will switch to a subscription model from July 4
  • The Weather Channel app offers customized weather forecasts, maps, severe weather alerts and video including full episodes of TWC original programming
  • AccuWeather.com‘s Cirrus app makes use of iPad’s accelerometer to facilitate a landscape view and provides access to major features with a “scrubber” scrolling bar at the bottom of the screen
  • Dailymotion‘s web video app offers access to 13 million+ videos categorized into 14 thematic channels

Verizon
announced price cuts for the underwhelming Palm Pre and Pixi Plus smartphones in an effort to spur demand. Palm’s Pre Plus is now being offered for $50, down from $150, while the Pixi Plus now goes for $30, down from $80. Both require two-year contracts.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

As appealing as the iPad is to lovers of elegant gadgets, it’s truly only as compelling as the content developed for it. Marvel Entertainment, recently acquired by Disney, is already gathering buzz with its free Marvel Comics app featuring interactive versions of over 500 of the company’s best-loved comics including Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk and Thor. Developed with ComiXology, it offers (and recommends) 3-page previews of available digital comics before purchasing, with full versions priced at $1.99. As you flip through a comic, panels come alive panning and zooming from one scene to another. The app could be a huge moneymaker for Marvel because it provides a brand new revenue stream for comic titles long out of print. To whet fans’ appetites, the app provides access to a few classic #1 editions for free. It may make sense to offer subscription plans of individual titles, particularly for current editions.
