Good morning, it’s Monday, April 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Clear Channel Communications will sell its 56 television stations and affiliated web sites to Rhode Island-based Providence Equity Partners Inc. to the tune of $1.2 billion. The deal is expected to close in fourth quarter this year. The stations are located in 24 states and include ten CW, eight Fox, seven NBC, six ABC, six CBS, four MyNetworkTV, two NBC Weather Plus, two Telemundo, five independent stations and six stations affiliated with Clear Channel’s Variety Television Network (VTV) as well as 18 digital multicast stations. The transaction also involves the sale of Clear Channel’s Television Operations Center and Inergize Digital Media which runs the group’s online and wireless components. Elsewhere, Clear Channel announced it will sell 161 of its 448 radio stations in 34 markets and this transaction is expected to yield $300 million.
Tonight’s Premieres:
History Channel: Cities of the Underworld at 9p
Food Network: Diners, Drive-ins and Dives at 10p
NBC: The Real Wedding Crashers at 10p
Lifetime Networks understands women. Lifetime… LMN… lifetimetv.com… it’s all for her.
~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
After a 28 year run, Bob Vila‘s show for CBS Television Distribution has shut down production. Thus far this season the Bob Vila Show has averaged a modest 0.3 HH rtg, on par with last year, per TV Week.
ABC Primetime update: Traveler will join the schedule on May 10 following Grey’s Anatomy, and repeat on May 30th in the show’s Wednesday night 10p time period.
With the firing of Don Imus comes the question, what will air on MSNBC weekday early mornings? MSNBC is auditioning new talent for the spot, and first up is Philadelphia’s morning drive-time radio host Michael Smerconish of WPHT, reports Variety. He will host today, tomorrow and Wednesday from 530a to 9am. If the name sounds familiar and you don’t live in or near Philly, it’s probably because he’s done a few guest stints on MSNBC’s Scarborough Country and has shown up from time to time on Fox News as well.
The reaction to news outlets showing video from the Virginia Tech shooter has been widespread. CYNOPSIS EMAILS TO THE EDITOR:
RE: News outlets showing Virginia Tech shooter’s video
4/20:
There was nothing in those videos that will ever help anyone to stop another such spree. Nor do the videos answer the question of why this person did what he did. The videos are sensational, indeed, and interesting, to be sure. But airing them, sadly, glorifies the killer and will, I predict, create copycats. News organizations will ALWAYS defend this sort of thing, but it isn’t news, it’s sensationalism. Editors used to take into consideration “the public good” in deciding what to print or put on the air. Now all they seem to consider is their ultimate horror: getting scooped.
