Good morning, it’s Monday, April 21, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Figuring to cut the middleman out of the equation as VOD movie revenues ramp up, Viacom, MGM and Lions Gate Entertainment have decided to join forces to launch a new premium pay channel planned for the fall of 2009. The move is being seen as the next body blow in the family squabble between sister firms Viacom and CBS Corp., as the three studios have been CBS subsidiary Showtime’s only movie suppliers until now. The venture will also work to jointly distribute the studios’ films online. Five studios overall are involved in the venture: Paramount, Paramount Vantage, Lionsgate, the newly retooled MGM and United Artists, now co-owned by Paula Wagner and Tom Cruise. Viacom, the lead investor, will provide operational support to the venture including marketing and affiliate services through MTV Networks.
As part of its full court press for the NBA playoffs, TNT’s broadband channel NBA.com-based TNT OverTime will feature 4 exclusive live video streams. Included this year are two “fans’ choice cameras” isolating individual players as determined by user votes, a scoreboard camera offering fans a bird’s eye view and a “cable cam” that zips up and down the court during the game. Also new this year are a video player & widget capturing the top 5 moments from Inside the NBA the night before, available on NBA.com, TNT.TV and on the league’s MySpace page, jointly produced by Turner Sports.
Tween-focused Radio Disney launched a new mobile website and texting program with mDisney to give fans mobile access to Radio Disney music and other content. The site, accessible by texting 347639 (DISNEY), also allows listeners to request songs and send shout outs to other users.
In other Disney news, Michael Urie and Becki Newton will host Ugly Betty‘s first-ever video podcast this week on ABC.com to promote the return of new episodes of the show. “Marc” and “Amanda” will be interviewing composer Jeff Beal this week.
Google rolled out a new video search interface enabling users to toggle between list view, grid view and TV view as they search for videos or browse the most viewed, most shared, most blogged about or movers & shakers.
Chicagoan Cara Cioni, 24, was chosen to represent the US in Bebo‘s online interactive travel series The Gap Year, produced with Endemol UK. The show pushed off on May 21.
Blastro.com is powering a new HD-quality VOD music channel on Verizon’s FiOS TV service, beginning with Roxwel (Rock, Metal, Indie, Alternative) and Yallwire (Country, Bluegrass, Christian) categories.
Metal Heads have yet another thing comin’. Judas Priests‘ seminal Screaming For Vengeance will become the first complete album to be released via the Rock Band Music Store, available on the Xbox Live Marketplace beginning April 22 and on the PlayStation Store from April 24.
Podcasting network Wizzard Media entered into a deal to syndicate film and TV projects from Fishman Productions.
Electronic Arts said it will extend its $2 billion offer for Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive by another 4 weeks after its hostile takeover bid failed to win shareholder approval. At the same time, EA threatened to lower its bid slightly to motivate the game publisher to sell.
The Independent Film & Television Alliance weighed in on the net neutrality debate, urging the FCC “to establish rules to prevent network operators from blocking or discriminating against lawful use of the Internet.”
Podcast and Online Video Show Ads scored unaided ad recall results from 68% of users compared to industry benchmarks of 21% for streaming video and 10% for traditional TV, according to two-year study conducted by TNS for Podtrac. Spending on online video ads is still in its infancy – representing less than 4% of all Internet advertising and just 1% of the amount spent on TV, according to eMarketer. But the company is forecasting that U.S. spending on online video ads will more than triple to $4.3 billion in 2011.
ComScore vigorously defended its paid click numbers refuted by Google in a company blog post, noting that ComScore reports only U.S. search ad results, leaving out international numbers as well as revenue from AdSense ads placed on partner sites.
The IAB released a major new overview user-generated content and the social media ad space, digging into strategies, trends and best practices in the space. The report was produced by the IAB’s UGC & Social Media Committee, which is hosting a leadership forum on June 2 on the topic.
Alex Brough has joined music blog network MOG as VP/Sales and Strategic Partnerships after 12 years at MTV. The move reunites Alex with MOG CEO David Hyman who hired him to work on ad sales at Addicted to Noize/Sonic Living before his stint at MTV.
Mitchell Hershey and Glenn Dolce have been appointed SVP/Advertising Sales & Marketing for The Hotel Networks (A LodgeNet Interactive Company). Mitchell, whose previous role was Sales Manager with Sinclair Broadcast Group, will direct the sales efforts for the Central and Western regions, and Dolce will oversee the Eastern region. Both will report to Derek White, President.
ABC.com launched a cool new Flash-based minisite called Lostscape to catch viewers up on what’s happened so far in Lost. Users can click on up to 34 items strewn across the beach to pull up different clips from past episodes, along with text-based background info. Each item also includes a link back allowing viewers to watch the entire episode. Dedicated Lost fans who find all 34 items will be entered into a contest to win an all-expenses paid trip to Comic-Con (which no doubt sits atop of their dream conference lists).
