Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, April 1, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…
International relations: Disney is planning to produce two versions of Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 with one specifically designed to attract audiences in China, the second-biggest international market for films made in the U.S., behind Japan. Sources say the studio is not planning to apply for official co-production status for the film in China, even though Beijing-based DMG Entertainment collaborated with Marvel on all the Chinese elements of the international film, including scenes shot in China and featuring Chinese actor Wang Xuegi. Co-production status for the international version would have designated the film as a domestically produced movie in China and potentially given Disney a larger slice of the Chinese box office. “While Marvel and DMG have decided not to apply for co-production status in China, the film does include significant Chinese elements,” Marvel said in a statement.

T Swizzle fans rejoice. Taylor Swift will guest on the season finale of Fox’s hit series New Girl. Details of Swift’s role in the May 14 episode were not revealed. She previously appeared in the 2010 rom-com Valentine’s Day, and guested on CSI in 2009.
David Kleeman watches a lot of TV. Not only because he’s president of industry professional development and resource hub the American Center for Children and the Media, but because he genuinely loves the medium. Though in his downtime he enjoys watching comedies like Big Bang Theory, in his professional life he guides the exchange of ideas and expertise regarding children’s programming and emerging issues, and the promotion of quality kids content. His latest blog can be found at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kleeman/grasping-at-elephants_b_2965359.html
Here’s David in his own words about…
The rise (again) of co-viewing
It feels like we’re seeing more reasons [for families] to co-view now that we’ve got a generation of parents who grew up with interactive media maybe not with the mobile media kids have today, but there’s no longer a generational divide. Co-viewing started to lessen when multichannel cable came along and TVs got small and cheap and there were five televisions in the house. It was also a time when, if you look at the demographics, parents were sending less time with kids overall, so they had less time to interact. But as of the 2000s, big screen televisions and game consoles have brought families back together in the living room…plus with the recession, families aren’t out as often.
Potential pitfalls of TV “everywhere”
Too often producers feel like content has to be “everywhere.” This idea comes from an anxious need to be where kids are, and the result too often is that they’re not doing a good job on any one platform because they’re trying to be all things to all people. Instead, it makes more sense to look at the audience you’re trying to reach, how they spend their time, and start with one or two carefully planned platforms. The audience will find you and guide you to where else they want you to be. One of the things I love about today’s young people is they’re pretty vocal.
The surprising benefit of next-generation programmers
I’m encouraged because people who are making media for kids now grew up with a lot of different devices that didn’t talk to each other. They know what frustrated them – and now they have a chance to fix it. I may come to love the term transmedia in the next 5-10 years.
Second screens and stickiness
This is a fascinating (business model). If you can contribute to the focus on TV content by having something on another device that’s (a companion) to what’s on the television screen, you engage attention as opposed to distracting it. There was a study done years ago in the channel-flipping age. Kids were saying, “We don’t flip channels because we’re bored – we do it because the way the stories are being told, we can get all we need in a few minutes.” So there’s a real need for enhanced story-telling.
Advice to the legacy kids networks
You have to decide who you are, and be that intensely. Legacy channels have struggled when they try to be all things to all people. In doing so, they lose the concentrated juice that made them who they are. The other thing I would advise is to build your bench strength. You’ve got to look at how young people are making media right now and make sure those new creators have a place to go besides the Wild West of YouTube.
