The Digital Content NewFronts finally kick off this week with the Hulu NewFront on April 19. As the roster of content creators and providers who have decided to present grew from the original six to the mid-teens, one name stood out in its own way: NBCUniversal, a broadcast network. With that in mind, I asked Linda Yaccarino, President/Cable Entertainment & Digital Ad Sales at NBCUniversal, about NBCU’s decision to participate in the DCNF.

NBCUniversal has a unique role with the NewFronts being the only broadcast network to participate in the event. What made NBCUniversal decide to get involved in this event?

The bottom line is that digital is an essential component of every marketing campaign. Today’s consumers are on multiple screens, and to connect with them effectively, you need to reach them on every platform. NBCUniversal is uniquely positioned in this space with both the content and an enormously powerful digital portfolio that enables us to reach every niche audience with massive scale. We are a big player in this space, and the DNCF is a prime opportunity to educate the marketplace about our unrivaled offerings.

How is NBCUniversal approaching its first-ever digital upfront? How different is it than the preparation for the traditional upfront?

Unlike the traditional TV upfronts, our digital upfront will not be about screening pilots. Everyone in the marketplace already knows NBCUniversal has a ton of great content. Our presentation will showcase our breadth of digital brands, and illustrate how marketers can launch integrated campaigns across this vast portfolio.

For NBCUniversal, will there be more of a focus on how digital platforms can build viewership and engagement around your existing television content, rather than original digital content?

NBCUniversal has been in the original content business since the dawn of television. Much of our native digital content is derived from this wealth of on-air content from our hit TV shows. A perfect example is the tremendously successful transmedia extension from the last season of Bravo’s Top Chef, which was created for a digital audience.

As traditional TV splinters, there’s a growing consensus among marketers that you have to combine TV with digital to maximize reach and impact. We know content is consumed on all screens — the consumer does not make the distinction between television and digital. NBCUniversal’s web, social, mobile and television properties are in a unique position to cross promote and drive traffic and engagement across our entire portfolio.

NBCUniversal also has several standalone digital businesses, including Fandango, DailyCandy, iVillage and Television Without Pity, that are built on original content and are essential destinations for consumers in the entertainment and lifestyle arena. These brands have extraordinarily loyal and engaged followings  and, combined with our online television brands, provide a powerful platform for advertisers.

What are your goals for the DCNF?

NBCUniversal’s digital portfolio collectively reaches 76 million monthly uniques. Our goal is to educate the market on the powerful digital brands that are a part of our company – from the digital properties associated with each TV network to the stand alone digital networks such as Fandango, DailyCandy, iVillage and Television Without Pity — and how we can put those brands to work for advertisers in an impactful and innovative way. Through the DCNF, we will demonstrate how marketers can extend and activate their TV investments with the TV companies they already have relationships with. We are making their TV investments work harder with digital activation.

What’s important to know about multiplatform offerings such as Xfinity TV in the context of the DCNF?

Today, Xfinity is the fourth largest portal and is the destination where Xfinity cable subscribers watch their favorite TV shows and movies. It is available to advertisers on a local, regional and national basis. We will continue to make our content available on all platforms from the full episode player to the VOD environments where it already lives. For the upfront, advertisers can expect to be offered the opportunity to extend their TV investments across all the screens where the programming lives.

In NBCUniversal’s opinion, what is the relationship between digital advertising and digital video content?

All digital content — not just digital video content — is built for a connected and multi-screen audience. The advertising accompanying our content should be seen as a vehicle for brands to activate their audiences the same way we engage our audiences at NBCU — in an authentic and engaging way.

 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

SMOSH, an online content company that focuses on teens and young adults, will launch Shut Up! Cartoons, a new animation channel on YouTube that is a part of the video leader’s ongoing original programming initiative. SMOSH, which is owned by Alloy Digital, has signed up a number of content creators to develop shows for the new channel. This roster of creative talent include producers of Hoodwinked!, Pinky & the Brain and CatDog, among others. The plan is for these creators to deliver 18 short-form web series, comprising a total of 180 episodes, in the first year. Three series will premiere the week of April 30, which is when the channel is set to go live. Each show will debut at 12pm PT. Alloy Digital says that the original content channel will be promoted across its digital properties, including SMOSH’s two YouTube Channels (6+ million subscribers), SMOSH.com (13+ million monthly visitors) and the Alloy Digital Network.

Google is partnering with the 2012 Republican National Convention (August 27-30), which is set to take place in Tampa, Florida, to live-stream key events. Google will also be powering some Hangouts with Republican leaders during the event, and indicates that it will serve as the convention’s official social platform.

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

Among the solutions and services that Ericsson plans to unveil and demonstrate at 2012 NAB (in Las Vegas) is its Multiscreen Video Processing solution. According to the company, the solution enables high quality and cost-effective processing of hundreds of channels into the thousands of adaptive streaming profiles necessary for a “TV anywhere” experience. The solution consists of the Ericsson SPR1200, a hardware-based multiscreen transcoder and the Ericsson NPR1200, a flexible multiscreen network processor for packaging and publishing linear content on additional screens.

Xytech is announcing full support and compatibility of its MediaPulse platform with Sony’s Media Backbone system. The new workflow solution will be demonstrated throughout 2012 NAB. MediaPulse is a resource, work order and asset management solution for broadcasters, studios, media services companies and transmission service providers, and offers a suite of scheduling, operational and financial management tools. The Media Backbone system aims to streamline the file-based workflow, and is based upon Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), allowing for the monitoring of various file-based workflow events within current broadcasting and post-production facilities. Xytech says that MediaPulse supports SOA and “transactionalizes” so facility staff can manage related business processing, resource scheduling and media asset cataloging within its digital order structure.

Thought Equity Motion, a provider of cloud-based management and licensing services, has changed its name to T3Media, Inc., effective immediately. Along with the new name, T3Media has updated its web presence. At t3licensing.com, which received a refreshed design and improvements to the site’s search, preview and download features, video producers can access the company’s library of footage. Additionally, large video library owners that are interested in the company’s hosted Platform solutions to store, access and sell content can visit t3media.com.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

By 2016, over 110 million Americans will watch video content on a mobile phone at least once a month, according to a new eMarketer estimate. This would equate to about a third of the total U.S. population. This year, eMarketer expects 19.3% of the population, or 25.2% of U.S. mobile phone users, to watch video content on a mobile phone at least once a month. Other eMarketer estimations include:

  • By 2014, a third of U.S. consumers (42.4% of mobile phone users) will access social networking sites via mobile devices at least once per month.
  • Looking at Facebook specifically: The number of mobile users who tap into the mobile version of Facebook to jump to 93.9 million by 2014.
  • The number of mobile music listeners will almost triple between 2011 and 2016, jumping from 30.9 million to 81.3 million (eMarketer covers music that is directly downloaded or streamed to phones at least once a month).

 

~ EXEC MOVES ~

The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) has appointed Curt Hecht to the position of Chief Global Revenue Officer. In the newly created role, Hecht will be responsible for the overall strategic definition and management of TWCC’s international business. He will also lead digital and cable ad sales revenue generation, including all aspects of sales operations for the company’s digital products and properties, such as weather.com, its mobile and tablet apps and The Weather Channel. Hecht will report to TWCC Chairman and CEO, David Kenny.

Sara Stahl has been named the new VP/Strategy at Gannett, effective April 23. In her new role, she will be responsible for the recently established Program Management Office, and will support the company’s strategic initiatives and coordinate cross-functional teams as they deliver on key priorities identified by the Gannett Leadership Team. Currently, Stahl is the VP/Operations and Communications at Gannett Digital. At her new post, she will report to Gracia Martore, President and CEO of Gannett.


 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

io9, the website from Gawker Media that is focused on science, sci-fi and the future, has launched a new show on Revision3. Titled io9: We Come From the Future, the show is hosted by the io9’s Editor-in-Chief Annalee Newitz and writer Esther Inglis-Arkell, and is based on the editorial of the website. The first episode features a review of Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods as well as a demonstration on how to turn a pickle into a light bulb.
