4/16/07

Good morning, it’s Monday, April 16, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Google won the bidding war for internet ad-serving company DoubleClick, agreeing to pay private equity firm Hellman & Freidman  $3.1 billion – almost double what Google paid for YouTube last year. The deal brings the two juggernauts of search and display advertising together under a single banner and keeps Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL – all of which were bidding for the company – from establishing a stronger foothold in the internet advertising business.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Telemundo:  Sin Verguenza (No shame) at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Telemundo premieres a new telenovela, Sin Verguenza (No shame), today at 10p.  The show is about love, passion, sensuality, and rebelliousness in the lives of four women with a lingerie store as a backdrop.

Litton Entertainment will syndicate the MTV series Date My Mom, from Reveille, according to TV Week.  The series currently has 100 episodes and will go into syndication in 2008.  The show is based on the premise that we all grow up to be like our mothers – a player can choose between prospects to date, but must make that decision by first going on a single date with each of the prospect’s mothers.  No word on terms as yet.

Coming to you later on this morning, the first Cynopsis 10th Anniversary Special Edition – this edition featuring the year 1997.  The publication first began on April 2, so this “year in review” covers only 8 months of the year and will include those items that affected the industry in the long term, the things that make you look back and think gee, and the funny stuff.  It’s amazing how much can happen in just 8 months.  Look for it around noon time today in your inbox.  Cynopsis will publish a total of 10 of these Special editions, coming out monthly and each featuring a different year in our 10-year run.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS’ alternative programming department is cranking on a number of reality and game show pilots this month, the most in production at any one time in the history of the network. Specifically, CBS has five game shows and one new reality series in the pipeline:

  • Life as a Song – participants will perform an important event in their lives (such as a marriage proposal) as a musical. From executive producers David Metzler and David Collins (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) and Neil Meron.
  • The Wizard – hosted by Craig Ferguson; crossover game show with improvisation and scripted comedy routines. Executive produced by Ferguson along with producer Jay Renfroe (The Surreal Life).
  • Game Show in My Head – former SNL player Chris Kattan has been tapped to host this concept from the U.K. that combines hidden cameras with a game show. From Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg.
  • Power of 10 – Drew Carey will host this game show from Michael Davis that has contestants guessing the results of nationwide surveys using five questions. Participants start at $1,000 and each answer increases in value by multiples of 10 ending up with a potential windfall of $10 million.
  • Do You Trust Me? – Tucker Carlson will host this game show from Phil Gurin where strangers bet on how much they trust each other as they develop relationships through gameplay and learn details via interviews conducted by Carlson.
  • Pop Dynasty – reality series in development featuring three members of the Jackson family as judges for a singing competition.

Also of note, CBS will return the Big Brother to the schedule this summer and debut a new series from Mark Burnett called Pirate Master.

Apparently Name that Tune type of competition shows are big in development at the moment — NBC has one called The Great American Spelling Bee from Gurin and Horowitz; and a remake of Name that Tune itself for CBS, and now, per Variety, there is another on the horizon, this one from FoxOff the Charts is from RDF USA, and if you’re at MIP TV this week, look for the big unveiling there.
