Good morning, it’s Friday, September 9, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
The potential of TV Everywhere is spreading to more programmers. At the IBC trade show in Amsterdam, Adobe said it has inked deals Fox, Scripps, Hulu, AMC Networks and other programmers for its Adobe Pass TV authentication tools to verify whether consumers can watch online content from pay TV operators. They join existing Adobe Pass customers Viacom and Turner. Also, on the TV Everywhere front, Comcast-owned thePlatform linked up with international cable operator Liberty Global for TV authentication video management. ThePlatform’s cloud-based system lets the operator determine whether viewers are authorized to watch online video from a multichannel provider.
Underscoring the importance of social media to TV networks, NBC Sports is upping its use of Facebook, Foursquare and Twitter as well as other platforms for its Sunday Night Football games. That includes enhancements to the Facebook page, as well as tweets from a sideline reporter, and social check-ins using GetGlue and foursquare.
Facebook, the world’s biggest social network doubled its revenue in the first half of the year to $1.6 billion, according to a Reuters report citing a source with knowledge of Facebook’s financials. The news outlet also reported that Facebook’s net income was nearly $500 million.
Project Runway topped the list of influentials in the fashion business, according to social media influence ranker Klout.
Another way to assess your importance on the Web? If you want to know how you rank, or how your nemesis fares, you can check out PeekYou, which ranks people based on the prominence of their Web profile and media coverage.
The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement signed on A&E Networks and Scripps to its roster of programmers, agencies and advertisers aiming to devise new ways to measure multi-platform media consumption.
Online ad technology firm Vizu Corporation introduced new tools to help customers benchmark their campaigns against brand metrics such as awareness, favorability or intent. Advertisers can also compare their performance against other categories such as CPG, retail or automotive, Vizu said. The company culls the data from campaigns it has run over time.
The Scripps TV Station Group inked a deal with Web content management company EndPlay to manage live streaming of TV programming on mobile devices for Scripps’ nine TV markets. EndPlay said Scripps is the first TV group to launch the solution across its stations.
Video platform and footage licensing firm Thought Equity Motion acquired video platform provider Panvidea and will integrate its cloud-based tools into Thought Equity’s offerings.
Consumers are uploading three times more video to the Web via mobile phones than they did a year ago. In addition, video uploads from mobile devices are 14 times higher than they were in December 2010. That data comes from an eMarketer analysis of Photobucket site data. According to TNS, about half of worldwide mobile phone users use the video camera on their phones.
Alternative TV viewing is on the upswing, according to a study from Knowledge Networks. Streaming or downloading shows to view on a TV, computer, smartphone or tablet has grown by 35% this year compared to a year ago for the 13-to-54 age group. What’s more, monthly use of any digital service connected to a TV rose by 50% for this age group. Specifically, they’re watching more videos on game consoles, mobile devices and via streaming video services like Netflix.
Many apps are languishing once downloaded. About 95% of consumers who download between one and nine apps on their tablets regularly use them, according to a GfK MRI study. But only 37% of iPad owners with 10 or more apps use those apps regularly, and only 16% with 20 or more apps use that many. The research firm also found that the app store is the most vital source for discovery of new apps with about 80% of consumers finding the apps they download by browsing or searching the app store or because it was featured there. App reviews are also a popular way to find new apps.
The era of the remote control might be nearing its end. About 41% of 18-to-34-year-olds would rather use a phone, tablet or computer to channel surf or program the DVR, according to a study from consulting group Altman Vilandrie & Co. A number of cable operators have started to offer apps that let you change channels, access VOD and record shows.
Online media veteran Scott Ard, editor-in-chief of CNET, will join Yahoo! as of September 19, based in Sunnyvale. He will be responsible for programming their homepage and will oversee editors in a several locations, including Sunnyvale, Santa Monica, New York and Dallas, as well as consult with various international Yahoo! sites about news coverage and packaging. Scott reports to Jai Singh, Editor-in-Chief of the Yahoo! Media Network
Ben & Jerry‘s is introducing a new ice cream flavor inspired by the Saturday Night Live “Schweddy Balls” skit starring Alec Baldwin. For a good laugh, check it out here. The new ice cream flavor will be released Sept. 24, just in time for Baldwin to guest host the iconic show again.
